At 6:00 am on March 26 a fire broke out at a commercial building on Voyageur Way and Simpson Rd in Richmond BC. Blocked doors and unnapropriate stowage slowed down the fire crew's offensive attack. Flames spread inside the structure and through the roof within 30 minutes. Firefighters battled the 2 alarm blaze for over 5 hours.

@@dlt2154 Even if the pre-assigned RIT gets to the job first, no competent FD is going to leave that be without reassignment. First arriving will take initial investigation/attack, 2nd/3d arriving or 1st rescue arriving will be re-assigned as RIT. You don't just get to the fire first and say 'well that's not our assigned job' while you wait for the 1st due to navigate a traffic jam.

As former Electro-mechanical engineer in building services manager, I had fire brigade to train my staff to use the right extinguishers for the type of fire in situation. Also to turn off power, gas or oil supply. Done fire drills, evacuation registers. In early stages the fire would never get a chance to even grow.

+Archibald Mirenopteryx. What you say is only true when inexperienced firefighters pump thousands of gallons of water through the windows on a small domestic fire. Here in the UK, we still use hosereels outside once the crews have entered. Spraying water upwards onto ceilings rains down and slows the progress of the fire. A lot of training is required, along with good communications all round. Needless to say. care needs to be taken not to produce steam faster than it can exit the building. In the case of this video, while crews were kitting up to enter, it was becoming increasingly obvious that an interior attack would be futile and highly dangerous.

Thought the whole house would be lost at the rate it was spreading, fire crew wasn't too far away. They busted their asses as soon as they stopped the truck, organized, determined, and stopped the fire and put it out in less than 20 minutes. Burned about 1/4 of house but I have much more respect for you guys(all firefighters) after seeing them up close! I would be so upset If they were just standing around.

Richard Simpson it’s not that simple. If they hit it too hard and the building is already weakened, it’ll bring it down. If they just hit the outside, then think it’s out, and the inside flares up, then they have to do it all over again. It was already a total loss when they got there, just let it burn and control it.

It is real easy for all of you arm chair firefighters to judge the men at the scene. You cannot see what is going on in the rear of the building or inside it for that matter. The men in front that5 seem not to be doing anything are more than likely there for backup. They're actually known as RIT or Rapid Intervention Team, who's sole job is to be ready incase crews get injured, trapped, close to running out of air etc inside the building. So it doesn't really matter what you think they should be doing, they are doing the job they were assigned to do and won't leave unless reassigned or activated and in those cases a new team will move into that task.

You may be right, the visible flames we speak of may not have been the primary fire area. However, putting water on a developing fire is never a waste of resources, water or time. "flames coming out windows are not spreading" that is not correct. Although the vent outlet here may be expelling a fair amount of energy being produced, its radiant heat output or heat flux will be causing other combustibles in that room to pyrolyze filling this area with, and transporting, unburnt gaseous fuel.

They had hoses going into the building, which you can see at the start. They were trying to go up and put it out but were forced out due to the amount of crap inside.

You discuss fire departments learning something, but you fail to learn from me. I have reasonably discussed tactics and physics of fire with you and you still spout the same garbage. Your assessment of this fire is incorrect as usual. You epitomize the moth to flame firefighting that most bad firefighters follow. Do you really think that anything on that second floor is salvageable? If so you are really stupid. If you think that spraying a hose stream into this structure through the window will put this fire out or even benefit you are also stupid, It wont. This is a type 3 constructed building with either a open web bar joist or open web wood truss constructed roof with plywood or metal decking. It is going to collapse. That is a given. You throw out these pearls of wisdom or as you call it common sense from a logical person but your statements have no merit. You talk big about protecting the business owners stuff but you say nothing about salvaging the first floor or protecting the unit to the D side of the unit of origin. I too don't think that they did a good job but for very different reasons. NOTHING they are going to do will extinguish that fire. That building is easily 80 -100 feet deep and at least 15 feet wide. That is easily 1500 square feet with a drop ceiling likely 10 feet from the floor. The parable of the ark of a hose stream will not allow the water to penetrate into the structure very far. It will likely hit the t bar ceiling and collapse it, and then fall straight down. You can see the T bars through the window. You spray water into that structure with stock piled to the ceiling and you will extinguish nothing of value with no penetration. There is a stock room to the rear of the occupancy with burning stock so there was access delays to the rear. There is fire involving everything on the second floor so you will save nothing on that floor. Even if you deck gun that structure fire you will not extinguish or even get a reasonable knock down. You have to focus on the exposures and what you can save not just spray water on flames at a window. Spraying water into a building with firefighters inside is irresponsible and dangerous. So that is not an option. If you flow a deck gun flowing water at 1000 gpm per minute. In ten minutes you will have flowed 10,000 gallons on to the second floor of a structure that is not very strong to begin with. The added weight is over 80,000 lbs. That makes salvaging the first floor dangerous. Not to mention the upstairs stock that is also likely very heavy, so overloading the second floor is dangerous. So again your statements are not valid. You constantly suggest that firefighters freelance on the fire ground. You have a serious issue with authority figures. The Incident commander is coordinating the operation. If you just do what you want then the operation will be a disaster. you will risk firefighters lives and do more damage. Now most firefighters on you tube suck. But your ridiculous statements do nothing to change that because your tactics also suck. The guys standing outside are a Rapid Intervention Team. A requirement by OSHA. OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134. Look it up. They are not there to fight fires they are only there to respond to firefighters trapped or injured. They cannot fight fire. They can assist with movement of hose lines outside but have to stay mission ready. I would guess that you would also disregard OSHA regulations as well. They are figures of authority. So keep making pampas statements of how great you are and making comments that accentuate your lack of general and firefighting knowledge. It is really entertaining.

The building was a large floor area warehouse type. The flames pouring out the windows at the beginning very likely were not the seat of the fire, so wasting resources pouring water on that area would have been pointless. I've often wondered the same, but think about it - flames coming out windows are not spreading - it's the fire inside that is the big concern. And, as the uploader pointed out, blocked doors and improper storage were an issue, hampering the initial interior attack.

There are clearly lines into the structure at the start. I'm assuming the crew "standing around" as so many have put it are the RIT team. I'm surprised so many of these "firefighters" commenting don't realize that. Without knowing interior conditions, some fires just go this way.

alot of engines here have crosslays instead. their not on a reel, but laid accross. and usually, they'll quick stop and 'snag' the hydrant, and they have the hose in the back laid out so they can just drive off, stretching the hose.

I'm not a firefighter, but I've read about quite a few historical fires. WHen I saw the second floor was completely in flames, I thought, If I were the chief, I'd tell my crew to get out. When the second floor is completely in flames, there's a high risk of the second-level floor collapsing. Why should these firefighters risk their lives?

That is probably the RIT team or they hadnt got an assignment. Did you not see them put the RIT cache together a bit later. RIT is rapid intervention team and they are for the firefighters safety since there are evidently crews inside. So without knowing what their assignment was you cannot knock them for being there.
