[Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services Responding to a Fully Involved House Fire:]
At around 21:40 on Sunday October 15th multiple people called 911 reporting a fire at the back end and roof of a house near West Broadway and Manitoba Street. I happened to be at Broadway and Cambie Street when the call went out and immediately saw the flames glowing down the street. I arrived on scene just as VFRS' 3rd and 4th Company reached the scene, about 5 minutes after the first calls came in. The fire was rapidly spreading despite quick efforts by firefighters and the flames soon reached high into the sky, engulfing the inside and outside of the wooden building. The fire was largely brought under control within an hour, but kept flaring up at times. Firefighters were also working to extinguish the flames in the alleyway behind the building. The power went out in the entire neighborhood during the fire, leaving thousands of people in the dark and disrupting traffic and transit as well. I hope everyone made it out of the building and there were no casualties! Excellent work by the Vancouver firefighters!

Nevermind the whole US vs. Canadian crap. It's always a pleasure to watch professionals at work and these folks were very, very good. Some great examples of staging and engine placement as well as containment and suppression. Plus the foam, which I'd never seen deployed before. The way the neighborhood was designed appears to have allowed for attack from ALL sides, including the aerial. This fire was pretty nasty-looking but it never stood a chance against these folks. From a non-firefighter adopted into a family of firefighters, salud to these firefighters. They should use this video in fire academies.

@jackmehoff2312
@jackmehoff2312 5 жыл бұрын
Kurtis McKemmie Ladder 3 did do an initial interior fire attack by forming a Fire Attack team/group with Medic4. There was an initial report of someone in one of the small apartments above the Drum shop. It was proven quickly that the person wasn't there and the Fire Attack Group withdrew as the fire up stairs was untenable and it's not worth the life of a FF. The Battalion Chief (IC) declared a Defensive Mode fire and that's why you see all the exterior "pressure washing" as you put it. Number one priority for Fire Fighters in Vancouver is Life over Limb and the safety of the FFs is above all else.

This dept doesn't have tower (bucket) ladder companies? They can be used to apply large volumes of water from ground level on up. If there was an alley behind the place one could have been used for a rear attack as well as having one in front doing the same. Certainly more effective than a fixed master stream in the street.
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses 6 жыл бұрын
Dan Rossell They only have one very old tower ladder in service now. Ladder 2 is one of their newest units that many halls are getting. The only other units they have are quints, which are just shorter ladders. I am not an expert on why they do what they do, I just filmed the video.

In Manchester, UK in 2019, there was a huge fire at an old textile mill in Ashton under Lyne. There were about 8 fire engines with pumps and 5 firefighters each, but just 2 towers (or aerial ladder platforms as they're called in the UK). These 2 were like huge cherry pickets, with a basket for the firefighters to stand in, rather than a very long telescopic ladder.

It is not for an electrical fire...This is a structure fire. Wood, synthetics....Actually, I think foam is over-rated, and expensive......They would have done just as well with water only. 25 year retired professional Firefighter opinion. It has its place, but not necessarily in a surround and drown situation. It could have been beneficial to cover the exposures with foam, it tends to stick around for a while before it sheets off or breaks down.
@jackmehoff2312
@jackmehoff2312 5 жыл бұрын
duenge Incorrect... Class A Foam is dirt cheap and Vancouver has a shit ton of it for all their Class A and CAFF engines and ladders. They also have a large quantity of AFFF foam concentrate for their Fireboats and incase of a large scale burning liquid emergency. Under the right conditions it works 5 times better than straight water.

William schlenger Hydrant pressures are normally around 110 PSI in this particular area of West Broadway. They hydrants also flow a minimum of 1500 GPM. Also, the transition from using 1-3/4 hose to 2-1/2 in initial attacks you really only get an increase of flow capacity of around 10-15%. An 1-3/4 hoseline is very effective.

Interesting to see that no entry into the building was attempted, and hoses from the street level were used rather than a extension ladder master stream - until very late in the proceedings when the building was already a total loss. Glad I don’t live in Vancouver ☹️

Building was too dangerous to enter to being with. Fully involved wooden structure, gas leak inside plus electrical fires, two vehicles burning in the back feeding the flames, nobody inside...why risk the lives of firefighters by sending them in there for no reason?! They did a really good job. No other structures impacted at all, nobody hurt. All good.

What is the meaning of the flashing GREEN traffic light?
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses
@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses 6 жыл бұрын
alvon911 As far as I know it just indicates that an intersection is pedestrian controlled, if nobody is there to press the traffic light button the light will stay green. That's how it is in Vancouver.

A flashing green traffic light in B.C is a pedestrian controlled light. Never turns red until the button is pushed.

Chris Partlow Never heard them say anything like that before, but firefighting equipment is expensive and certain people might also want to get at medication because the trucks are also used for medical calls.

I understand that Canada and the US are 2 separate Countries, and you can feel the difference in the culture, traditions and the people themselves. But esthetically the cities looks like there planed the same way, I mean even the Police and fire fighters have the same style of uniforms. Not trying to offend anyone just pointing out what I see.
