If you want dampproofing against the wall there are options with membranes and options with coatings. Membranes are for instance an EPDM membrane which is glued against the wall or an bitumen membrane which is burned against the wall, much the same as a bitumen roof, but then against the wall. The coatings are easier applied. For instance a liquid bitumen coating which is spread against the wall. Behind the coating you can put a French drain to keep the water pressure and stones away from the wall and the coating. For the French drain you can either have the traditional French drain or the studded membrane system which is a lot easier in this instance. The other option is to dig the soil away from the wall, which is technically the best and permanent solution. I have send you an email in which I send a drawing of the system with the liquid bitumen coating and the studded membrane system as French drain.

Lay your first row of brick and then make a slope away from the brick to the edge of foundation and also make a drop from center to the sides. Center being the high side dropping to the sides. back fill with crushed stone. You want water to run off and not pool on the back of the wall. Oh and before you back fill you can use that stuff Nic said.
