love your videos, longtime viewer. had a former city inspector move in behind us, and had nothing but problems until he moved away. He wouldn’t let my neighbour pressure wash his fence prior to painting it because he didn’t want paint speckles on his lawn, phoned the city constantly on everybody around him. He did his best to muck up everyone else’s day.

Can you imagine it, paint speckles on his lawn! The horror! All it takes is one person using a power washer, then before you know it everyone is power washing, cleaning up their fences. We can’t have that.
@jcberb8 ай бұрын
Love it when someone says "I have never, or it has never been done", does not mean it cannot be done or its wrong. That inspector from the get go already had an attitude; lack of knowledge automatically equated to "you cannot do it".

Interesting that we have most of the same issues over here with our planning consent and building control, but some things are different. Planning consent means finding out whether you can even do what you want to do (it generally has to be in keeping with the local area and neighbouring properties i.e., it can't stand out like a sore thumb), that you don't block out the light for neighbouring properties, or spoil their enjoyment of their own properties, and many other things. They consult neighbours to see if anybody rejects, but there has to be significant issues for approval not to be given. Things are much stricter if you live in a conservations area, or own a listed building (that is a property that is usually old, and important due to its location, architectural design, method of construction or just because it has some level of history attached to it). If you own that type of property, you are very limited as to what you can do both inside and outside, and it has to be done in very specific ways - it gets VERY expensive! You even need permission to paint your front door a different colour! In the UK, you're generally not allowed to construct anything forward of (in other words, in front of) the forward line of your home, no matter how big your property footprint is. This would include a regular wooden or plastic shed. So that means you can't build anything in front of your front entrance door. That being said, I have seen many garages way in front of the property line, so it seems the building developers, when they build new estates, have a lot more leeway from the planning department. Money talks I guess. I'm not sure of the layout of your new garage in relation to your home, but I'm assuming it's allowed to be virtually wherever you want to put it? Things are quite a bit more relaxed here when you do things to the side and rear of your property, and that would include extensions (adding rooms and the like to the main house), loft (attic) conversions, adding a conservatory/orangery, building workshops etc. You may need planning approval in some situations, but more often than not you don't, but you do need building control, which is similar to your area when they need to check something is being built properly, including the electrics, plumbing, water supply and drainage, roof, foundations and the like. Basically to check everything is safe and won't fall down. SO similar mostly, but different too. Good video, and sorry about your lovely dog.

Man, finally picked up the $150 ea. Goldblatt plate compactor (needs new clutch or DIY locking idler) and Wacker jumping jack (needs carb cleaned most likely). Super stoked rescue finds collecting dust since the previous owners got new tools. With that DeWalt pencil vibrator a few weeks prior... been a great score for the concrete chores tools. Other than those fancy rotating locking pole ends for the finishing tools... man... I think I can fabricate most all the other tools. Wishing now there was a cost effective UHPC resource for materials locally, seems the coal fired plants shut down and I've not yet found a metal fiber source. I'm almost thinking investing in the tools to make... might be a business op?

Oh and also that inspector is asking for the impossible… set your expansion bolts before you pour? Right. That said we used to use 8” stainless steel Wej-its on conventional sill plates 6’ OC In upstate NY… but those would never pass on a red iron building where your bents are 8-10-12’ apart. Those required a min of 4 1”x 24”bolts wet-set on every upright and we used a jig to set them.

Ah yes, the old “observational inspection.” I love that. Pay some yahoo close to a thousand dollars to sit there and watch me work for a couple hours. I’ve had that on pours before. He’d sit there looking bored, I guess making sure we vibrated properly or something. Pour is over by lunch and I write him a check for $800. Doesn’t comment on anything, never gets out of his chair. I had it once had to have him watch me set bolts in epoxy. Sat there while I set 10 bolts with Hilti epoxy and charged the client $800. Then the engineer required a pull test which cost the client $250. That’s $1050. The epoxy was about $100 and it took me 20 minutes but it delayed the project a week. Really knew how to pad his income. All I can say is dirty hands, clean money.
