This is a demonstration on building very solid garage shelves using 2 x 4s and OSB boards. I also used 3 inch screws but you may want to use something a little shorter so they don't stick out from the wood if you drill to deeply.

Absolutely love the supporting 2x4 system. Finally a person who understands utilizing wood supports instead of relying on screw strength to hold up the shelf boards. Very tidy, very strong. I made my workbench utilizing this support system. I have stood on top of it many times. Well done Sir.

EXACTLY!! Some of these videos are going to get somebody in trouble if they load up the shelves and dont have those 2x4 supports holding the load. You can load this type shelf system up and no worries.

You should build something around the water tank. Lots of wasted space with those things. Just don't screw into the wall, you don't want to hit a water line. Nice build.

It appears that the cross pieces (21") are held to the frame by screws instead of resting on a column.

Ya, the end cross pieces should be 24".

How do you account for the floor not being level? A lot of garage floors are pitched for drainage.

How many 8 foot 2x4s are used altogether? I came up with 17 total: 6 for the vertical legs, which leaves you with 6 of the 16 inch shelf supports for one shelf. 2 more for the other twelve 16 inch shelf supports. 6 for the long side of the shelves. 3 for the framing in the shelves.

I built my workbench using the same type using a similar structural design,e.g. vertical 2x4's for support instead of horizontal 2x4 supports under the shelving. Your design is much stronger. My work bench is 10 yrs old; when we moved, I took it apart and it went with me...too good to leave behind. BTW, I finished my basement using a combination of crosspoint (a.k.a Phillips)and Torx screws. I LOVE Torx screws. I will never go back to using crosspoint screws! :o)

Nice and informative video. For this project, how many 2x4s did use you use and what’s the exact length of the 6 legs and thickness of the OSB?I need to build this shelving this summer. Thanks.

I know almost nothing about working with wood, even for an easy project like this one, so I have a question. Wouldn't it be better to nail 2 by 4's directly to the wall studs, making sure the boards are level? If your floor isn't perfectly level, seems like the shelves might be off level the way you did this. I really like the way you used those supporting uprights. Looks like you could lie on these shelves without worrying about nails sheering apart. Well done.

Good build I just made the same thing for our garage, although I did not screw it to the wall and I left the center support leg in the front off. And it's as strong as I need it to be. If the 8' footers on the front start to sag I'll add the center support but I like having it open.

I would like to give a shout out to Mark Hanson on KZbin for the idea. Check out his channel too.

Uuummmmm it's not a "guard rail" ... it's a fence

And you didn't add for the thickness of the blade when you marked the 4 2×'s at once. Just sayin....

This design is structurally a better design than most garage shelving I have seen on KZbin. This design transfers the shelf weight directly to the floor rather than to nails or walls studs. Very good design.

I can't for the life of me understand why so many videos on woodworking do not show wood glue being used on at least some of the parts of a project.
@ron79265 жыл бұрын
no need if you double leg design like this itll hold 100s pounds of weight with no problems, now if you start gluing wood together it makes it nearly impossible to change the design or pull it apart to relocate it late down the track.
