When we got our new chimney put in Dad so his house was all tin roof we were up there washing the mess off the tin that the bricklayer made and I stood on the tent and was sliding down the tin and that back then you put the nails on the high side of the tin and all the nails went through my arch in my boots as I was going down the roof standing up didn't want to fall and get those nails in my you know what my dad tried to throw me the garden hose he was washing the roof off but he didn't get it far enough so I went all the way down the roof and just before I went off the edge of the roof as I was going down I pushed off the roof because there was a concrete sidewalk below me and I landed in the grass luckily and it was only probably a 12 foot drop but I was pretty young back then in my early 20s so I was pretty strong and we might say flexible🤣🤣🤣So the brick layer started calling me Superman

All my sheds in my shops outside are all made out of Yellow Cedar logs and they're all notched there's no nails or screws in any of it and it's been up for good 15 years 20 years but they're starting to Rot on the bottoms now One of my sheds the ro And the floor are pallets of is the bottom of a 24 foot boat had to get rid of the fiberglass boat so I used the bottom for a roof and it don't leak the floor of my sheds are all wood pallets so the wood has an air space underneath it

You guys are awesome ! Quick story : growing up in Maine we did 10 cord every year. Tree length. We were the wood splitter. Getting off the bus and walking up to house with my siblings and seeing that some meathead had left that mountain of wood next to the woodshed was not a good day ! Lol. Stop in your tracks and shake your head while staring at the ground. I’m 53 and just started burning wood again and I absolutely love it and the process. NOW. but I hated it then !!! Lol. Take care Ryan & Von ! Love what you’re doin ! Much love from the Great state of Maine

Yeah I found that too in the winter on a metal chimley that the cap gives you more creosal than the last three or four feet a year pipe but even then with firewood that been down for three years and dry I still had to go up and clean my chimney about every two or three weeks don't know why but I hadn't before I started cleaning my chimney every two or three weeks I had probably a chimney fire every month and they're not pretty and they're not fun they're pretty scary sometimes it's kind of funny cause my dad had a brick chimney and all she did to clean it was throw a bunch of newspaper in the wood stove light it up and have a chimney fire and that's how it used to clean his chimney but after a while you couldn't do that because you'd have neighbors called the fire department and then you'd have to pay for the fire department and when he was in camp and I was a younger kid we had a chimney fire in his and it was like looking down a volcano with melting lava inside your chimney it was really scary first time ever calling the fire department and dad got mad at us when he got back at a camp My chimney fighters I've learned over the years is to throw glasses of water inside your wood stove which sends up a steam and puts out your chimney fire and I've even had to sprinkle the top to slow it down and let it burn off they get pretty scary sometimes and then after you have a chimney fire it gets expensive because you got to replace all your pipe
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
I’m not interested in having a chimney fire anytime soon. When we cleaned out pipe, we had zero build up in the pipe, just at the cap. We were amazed how clean it was considering we did t clean it all last winter.😊

Make sure to dig a water trench...(can be done with a shove but will be difficult due to the stones in the soil) around and behind the shed.....so any rain water falling on the roof till snow... is not seeping into the foundations and is going away from the shed., You both are doing a mightt fine job... stay Safe.. regards from Singapore, GOD BLESS.

By putting down the bed of gravel, we actually raised the base of the shed above the surrounding grade, so all water should shed away from the wood and posts.

Biggest mistake I did when I built my greenhouse out of logs I left the bark on the logs and all the wood bugs loved it and then the wood bugs kept eating all the stuff I grew in the greenhouse so if you build that greenhouse make sure you don't build it up with logs with bark on it and yes a lot of my logs rotted because I left the bark on it even though they were yellow cedar but they lost it over 20 years so that's good enough I mean all I gotta do now is when the rotting is just pour a concrete block around them if I want no matter what if they rotten they shed still stand up

Ryan, you make everything you build look easy, great skills. It seems to be a busy life, living in Alaska enjoying the summer but remaining conscious of all the jobs that must be done in preparation for winter. I really enjoy when I see what your family are up to and you both helping them. Great example of family living and working together, needs to be seen in the dysfunctional society we live in. I can see the advantage of moving away from the city.

Just stumbled across you site... I'll be (God willing) building a similar structure just smaller. What do you think about tying in some 45 deg supports to the verticals/horizontals so the snow load accompanied by wind won't rack it either front to back or left to right? What do you think?

Good idea if you don’t sheet it like we did. The sheeting creates sheer strength to stop that from happening.

Good job. That looked a lot better and cheaper than building with lumber from a big box store. Well done. Just a thought. They make a nylon mesh tarp that will let the wind pass through it but the water won’t get in on your fire wood. Just screw it in at the top. I have used it on my dog kennels. It works good and this is the third year and it still looks brand new. Later

Nice wood shed...just think you won't have to be out in the cold this winter chopping and splitting wood.

great job on the woodshed, that should hold a huge load of wood. One suggestion, you took the top off the stove chimney, would it be better to put a T on top so snow and rain doesn't enter?

In our climate the snow and rain are not a concern due to the constant fire burning in the stove.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the tractor? We are looking at land in Fairbanks and your tractor is the size we need. I was just wondering what the price range would be
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
Tractors are very expensive up here. We paid $50,000 for the tractor with a backhoe, bucket and forks as well as a ballast box. You could save yourself a ton if you’re willing to travel to the lower 48 purchase one and tow it back.

Putting posts in the ground with the bark is just not going to last for a very long time. If you want to do that, then a few things you need to do. One, de-bark the logs, this takes away the environment the bugs like, which is under the bark. The pieces that will be in the weather, or apt to become wet you should char the outsides, which water proofs it. A Japanese method called, and forgive the spelling, ShoShimibon Used in ancient Japanese structures for thousands of years. And, it looks pretty good too. You might wanna leave some gaps too on the sides, to give good air flow all the way around.
