for the carving of those drawer fronts, I'd recommend using an angle grinder with a wood carving wheel to scallop it out. Channels like blacktail studio have examples of this. Love the desk though, I've been wanting to build an aluminum extrusion desk for awhile now!!
@Ideal_Idea3 күн бұрын
Angle grinder could work well, I was hoping to have something less aggressive to remove material but its going to be needed.

With contact cement, you can put a bunch of thin lengths of wood between the plywood and laminate, then slide the laminate around and align it as needed (the contact cement will not stick to the slats of wood). Then just pull the strips of wood out one by one and stick them together.

Another great project and once again, your video production is unparalleled! Do you think the desk would be sturdy enough if you used the drawer sections for support instead of the standing desk frame? Maybe with a rail running along the back? I don't have any experience with aluminum extrusion to judge the strength

Another great video!! The desk came out great and looks so much better than before. You should mount a large channel underneath the the desk so you can hide the surge protector and any other wires you might have while still retaining the ability to use the standing desk functionality. Are the legs for the standing desk able to support the added weight?

If you take it slow and reverse the tap to break the chips often, then you don't really need cutting oil when tapping standard* aluminum... Just make sure you keep the tap perfectly straight to the hole and don't use a lot of force...some people I know just use 1 finger on each handle of the tap wrench once they get it started to minimize how much force they can apply to the wrench...Also, the closer to the center of the wrench you hold it, the less force you apply to the tap (less leverage)... * Some specialty Aluminum Alloys are a LOT harder and DO require cutting oil when drilling and tapping, but the Aluminum you bought, is a fairly soft metal...
@AustrianDeathMachine92 күн бұрын
i love these videos man there is just something about it, you should try gridfinity on your DIY desk that would be sweet.
@HappilyHomicidalHooligan3 күн бұрын
If you build the box, then wrap the sides with a sheet of iron-on Veneer, then the finger joints are hidden and you never even know they're there and attaching the drawer slides is just as quick and easy (mark, center punch, pre-drill and screw in)... That also saves you from having to apply coats of finish as well since the Veneer IS the finish... 😄😁😆😅😂🤣

yeah, staining can get you rly bad. I planed 2 times after each failed staining a 5 metre long plywood board on a cnc (3 pieces together make 5m, so I wanted perfect thickness) + sanded to fresh 2 times after the last planing. I just let it be ugly and asked if the client liked it or should I make him a new one. He liked it, I was honestly surprised but after all it was not for a home but a bar. It was Epoxy inlay with black stain which either would stain the epoxy or wouldn't go on the wood because I chose plywood... I told him I can do it from HPL for free but he went with it
