Boy o' boy, that's beautiful. We're planning on re-doing the kitchen with butcher block counter tops & building us some much needed upper kitchen cabinets soon along with building a butcher block island here soon so this definitely helps us. Thank you for sharing this great big project

Thank you so much for the information my friend! My fiancé and I will be purchasing our first house in a year, and most houses being sold these days have a small kitchen or not enough counter space. Our first project will be to build an island with outlets! Large kitchens are very underrated. I hope you don't mind us borrowing your idea and process! Good work btw! Looks great!

I wouldn't say I am low on experience - I have a general set of knowledge on how to do most woodworking things - but executionally it can be daunting. One step at a time with lots of research in between. Measure twice, test your cuts on scraps, measure again, then make your cuts!

You know I'm coming around on this whole pocket screw thing. It's pretty impressive that you can build basically any shape with a few cuts and some inexpensive tools. Project looks great! Btw a 50/50 mix of mineral oil and beeswax makes a great coating for butcher block. You might even save some money vs. MinWax!

I've had a pocket hole jig for three years now - the same one - I use it on nearly every project - people can hate on it sometimes, but it is a no brainer for almost anything you build that requires strength and speed all at once

Thanks man - there’s around 3 feet around each side of it so plenty of room to maneuver appliances if needed. Video probably doesn’t show it that well. We also didn’t secure it to the floor (too heavy, doesn’t need it) so if we need to move it to make it easier then we can. Cheers

Pinning a few answers to repeating questions/comments for everyone. Here is a Sketchup Model of the entire island build: workshopedits.com/design-files/kitchen-island Here is a playlist of all kitchen-related projects you should check out: kzbin.info/aero/PLPPOwMwM2YYyrk8mi3ZQnL_A4JTJi-XZW FAQs 1. What color is the blue paint? Glidden Diamond semi gloss. (10dd 11/126) Americans cup (the Dark Blue) 2. Is it anchored? No - I could, but it's so heavy even pushing against it with most of my weight and strength won't move it at all 3. Why no electrical? We wanted to have the island in the kitchen and use it before we decide to add electrical to it 4. How do I open appliances? There is ample room on all sides to open things - nothing is hindered or blocked 5. Why Ryobi? Because it's affordable. 6. Is it sponsored by Ryobi? Do I ever say that in the video... What color is the paint: Glidden Diamond semi gloss. (10dd 11/126) Americans cup (the Dark Blue) One more time - the color of the paint is: Glidden Diamond semi gloss. Nice build. It's always great to see other DIY'ers doing good projects without all the fanciest tools. When it comes to pocket holes, I've found glue is not necessary. I've done many face frames and various other projects without glue and they've stood the test of time. I've even done some testing and concluded the same thing. Yes, the glue makes it stronger, but the joints are easily strong enough without so you can save yourself a bunch of time in assembly. I'm all about the practical. Keep building!

For a Rookie you did a great job. What I really appreciate is, you did what you could within your skillset, planned a lot, took some reasonable advice (from the father in law,) and tried your hand at this. I would have bought the butcher block too! We've got a great lumberyard here in the LA area (Ganahl Lumber) who does similar builds (in Corona and Anaheim at their mill locations) for reasonable prices. Keep going. Great job. I grew up in a professional cabinet shop, and was super impressed with your improvisation on the raised panels; I would never have thought to do them with a router that way, but I was spoiled by having top of the line tools. However, now just doing wood working as a hobby and not having a ton of tools, I was really inspired by your work. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! I got some hate for it - but they've held up very well in the kitchen so far - I do have a few more tools now so I think my goal would be to redo them someday with hardwoods if needed. Cheers!

wonderful project. More importantly, it was nice to see/hear you talk of the things you would do different. Both because you learned from your mistakes, and because the application may apply differently in alternate situations. Very well shot, narrated, and useful to a broad variety of viewers.

This is a great demonstration on how to do DIY the right way. I see a lot of DIYers that excuse their poor craftsmanship because of their lack of experience. You don't have to have decades of experience to take pride in your work. Definitely going to bookmark this video for future use, as I am getting ready to close on a house where I will be doing a lot of work myself. Keep making great videos!!

Thanks! The great thing about islands is that they can scale up or down too so if you don’t have some of the tools I demonstrate you can still make something great. Good luck on the house!

1 year follow up ... I’ve had the island up for over a year and I followed most of the steps you used. I stuck with A Birchwood countertop. Cost me about 1/3 of what a store bought island would have cost!
