Thanks for the video series Jeff. I just finished watching all the build videos and I learned a ton! Very inspirational!

I’ve decided to go with hovarter also and I’m anxious to watch your build. I’m build a modified version of Matt Estlea’s Bertha Roubo. I may DM you to ask some questions. S/F, Shannon

Seems like you could get SYP already dry and ready to use at your local roofing/truss supply company.... If those are that wet, they will probably warp on you. They look good, though.
@JeffRevell7 жыл бұрын
I searched all over for decent SYP and couldn't find any within an hour of my house. I was ready to go with 8/4 Ash but that was going to double my cost so I'm lucky I ran across these at my hardwood dealer. He normally only carries 4/4 SYP. Sticking the boards and letting them acclimate and dry a bit more after I milled them seems to have done the job.

if the wood wasn't fully dry, don't you think you should have acclimated your wood before planing/Jointing them? Now you're gonna have to do it all over again.
@JeffRevell7 жыл бұрын
No, they weren't soaking wet like 20%. They were probably more like 14% and sticking them for a couple of weeks just made sure that they were acclimated to my shop before going any further. It's been over two months since I milled everything and they have remained very stable even with all the crazy weather that we have had. My bench will live in my garage so the wood is about as dry as it needs to be for that environment.

if you used your riving knife that game with the saw it would not let the kerf close

Yes, I have been scolded many times over for the missing riving knife. I should have used one and always do now. Thanks

I have a question about your bandsaw. I have the same one but the start/run capacitor has failed. I have looked everywhere for a specification with no luck. could you tell me what size is in your saw. Specifically the number of microfarads and operating voltage.
@JeffRevell6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan van noy I would be happy to if I knew where to find that info. Can you give me a hint where to look?
@karissavannoy22516 жыл бұрын
@@JeffRevell the capacitor is located in the plastic case on top of the motor. There are six screws to remove the cover. Inside you will find a cylinder that is about 4 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. It should have writing on it that has the needed information. Thanks so much for your help,.

might need to redo some planing and jointing
@j.stires5 жыл бұрын
Your boards are flat and parallel but not level. You need to joint them first THEN send them through the planer... THAT'S why there's so much "tension" on the boards your splitting into "threes". Using a walnut wedge instead of a riving knife is a nice try but that's what they make quarters for. Thanks for your efforts and thanks for the great post.

A lot of processing involved in using thin stock like that.

the board wasn't pinching on itself, you were just feeding the board through the table saw from too far away. one hand must be between the fence and where the blade is at all times to keep it from turning on you
@JeffRevell7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I would NEVER put my hand between the fence and the blade, at least not without a large push device of some type. I was actually maintaining good pressure on the boards against the fence and they were feeding through straight. It's hard to tell that from the camera angle but my left hand was applying constant pressure on the board to keep it tight to the fence. The problem was that the cut was releasing tension in the board that caused the board to squeeze together as the kerf got further away from the blade. Also, I had been using my crosscut sled and did not reinstall my riving knife prior to making the cuts, allowing the boards to pinch back on the blade. Stupid on my part but luckily the boards were so heavy and the pinching force so tight that all it did was shut down my saw, not throw the wood back at me.

You need a riving knife

Wow! That was absolutely atrocious! You need to rethink your whole strategy.

OmG what a dangerous use of a saw👎

looking good, i read your text on the riving knife. i learned the hardway from a kickback when I was being extremely careful.. I would leave it on if i were you. you should still be able to use the crosscut sled with it on. i had to shave mine down on the grinder but definitely worth keeping it on..
@JeffRevell7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Luckily those boards were so big that the pinch just shut down the saw instead of throwing them back at me. My knife is off just a hair to the right and the boards always seem to just catch the edge so I need to reach around and pull the knife a hair left while pushing the board through. Talk about a nervous operation. Shaving down the front sounds like something I need to do.

I have that table saw. You can adjust that knife and center it to the blade!
