Sometimes I think expanding the apprentice and internship agenda (the American system) on zero or close to no pay from late 1998 in Australia to now , has made lots of new talent bitter or care little of their works, you get what u pay for. Young trades every decade have to do even more hundred of hours free of charge to obtain a certificate of skill. Simpler solution......STOP allowing the builders to engage their own building surveyors and have the lender and/or home owner appoint one instead. It should be law or at least contingent on a building permit and or home loan approval. Unfortunately the current model means the home owner either pays once and suffers the shodiness of the builder's surveyor (read mate) or they have to pay twice to engage their own independent inspector as well. Builders do factor in the cost of their surveyor when they sell a house build contract. We had to pay for an independent inspection company for our build and surprise surprise !....each and every stage of the inspection that the builder's surveyor had signed off on, our inpsector found many defects. After days each time back and forth with the builder throwing up arguments, the builder each time had to pause the build, reassess and then agree with us and rectify. This added 6 months to the build equating to 6 months of extra rent payments @ $600 per week of which the builder just shrugged and went "oh sorry about that", no refunds and no offer of a discount This essentially equated to us living without items we'd planned to do after the build due to a lack of funds which were re-directed to extra rental payments due to their stuff ups having to be reworked after initially being passed by their own inspector. Onlyone time did their surveyors rescind their approval after we challenged their 'expert knowledge' when confronting them with our inspector's findings. Can't argue standards I'm afraid! At the end of the day the government has allowed this to happen by A. allowing builder appointed inpsections, B. not being heavy handed enough when builders breach the rules and C. creating this mess in the first place by pushing a building boom that builders can't keep pace with in the first place.

As have been in the aus steel frame industry for over 15 years, i learnt many new players trying to promise anything but inexpeienced to make it happen. we deliver what we promised, and we have all coils tested to as1397 coils and you have to know what it is about and not to rely on labs or mills. As for the steel frame, the issues all can be found at the shopdrawings stage, use the experienced ones will cost you more in the begining but peace of mind during the journey. As a retired Mason I have seen many contractors take shortcuts, some it seemed with no concern for the homeowners. The more I worked with younger tradesmen the more I witnessed. The "it's good enough" attitude. Sadly today the workmanship is not what it used to be and a big reason for that is the inability for a tradesman to make a decent living and a GC having to bid the absolute lowest to get jobs so they take shortcuts. It is very true especially in building that you get what you pay for. I really appreciate the details this youtuber presents. I hope we can learn what happens to the builders.

You get 70 Uber drivers working under 1 builder with a ticket building 20 houses and this is what you end up with. Back 40 years ago it was 1 builder with 2 apprentices working on 2 houses. Reason for 2 houses was while other trades were working on 1 house the builders could jump next door to the other house and keep working. But they were always close by for the other trades to talk to if needed. No mobile phones and coffee shops in those days. The builders even laid the driveways but not these days. Passed off to sub-contractors and you wonder why houses cost so much.

(Deserved a complete rebuild. In 2006). Reported to the then Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, with several other victims of bad and passed building and inadequate compensation, requesting help (especially for Pensioners). Our stories were buried. Thought Labor would help, but no, have just made accessing compensation harder. Supported the starting of a group, Victorian Building Action Group, to tell all the horror stories, back then, 300000 victims of bad building through VCAT in Victoria alone annually. The financial, personal, relational and health losses to the purchasers is horrendous. A loss to the Victorian economy of billions!

They came and fixed every problem that i found within the builds. Its got nothing to do with the builder but the quality level of tradesman in Australia. They are paid a heavily inflated salary to complete a simple job but they are unable to complete the job to any fully compliment Australian Standard. Most of them have never seen or heard about the Australian Standards.

I don't agree that trades are heavily overpaid when it takes years of pathetic apprentice wages to become qualified, however I do wonder if the builders are even contracting qualified tradesmen?
@christybambi Жыл бұрын
@@Jim-yk9zw so take this point lightly: it takes more time as an engineer at university to become qualified in a specialised trade while we make no money at all and require to pay a fortune in uni fees, accom, food, rent etc. And than if i xomplete my studies, i than have to go through a grad program to meet the company skill sets. While a tradesman can drop out of highschool, doesn't even need to study hard and hit a apprenticeship with little or no real prior credentials and make more money after 4 years. Essentially they could go in to an apprenticeship as a muppet and come out as a muppet.
@Jim-yk9zw Жыл бұрын
@@christybambiFirstly, you chose to be an engineer so your circumstances are your own doing. Secondly, you get idiots in every field regardless of what it is as I work for some engineers that are Muppets. Thirdly you are missing the fact that as an engineer you will be mostly in a nice air-conditioned office and remain clean all day. Tradesmen are often travelling to different jobs daily/weekly, are exposed to dusts, chemicals, raw sewage, potential falls from ladders, working in crawl spaces and on hot roofs and other dangers all day every day. They won't have the longevity of career that you can have as an engineer due to their bodies breaking down.

@@Jim-yk9zw Yeh i chose to study hard, pay tutition fees, rent, food, etc, pass exams and become a engineer. While a tradie drops out of high school and gains his qualification after 4 years of bumming around. Sounds real fair, maybe u need to evaluate the logic your proceeding from and where its meant to go. By no means does that justify any sort of equality in salary. I wish it was so difficult being in an air conditioned room working on cad software that i would love to give to a tradie to do but most likely it would fly over their head but thats what you get when you drop out of high school and don't even get a pass mark. i have been on many sites and the only thing concerning is the lack of education regarding correct ppe, thats why Australia has high safety standards.
