Definitely an art to build a wood boat, one of the oldest profession's/trade's in the world slowly being lost by new and cheaper materials for lighter and stronger vessels, really makes me appreciate a person like you lou, knowledge you have I hope is not lost and your apprentice's or helpers look, listen, learn and take on-board all you teach, all the way from Australia mate we appreciate the videos keep up the good work.

Whether he is describing what is coming up in future videos, explaining why he does certain things certain ways, why certain logs sections of slow or fast growth wood is better for one task or another... Or if he is actually showing us the work being done... Lou is always teaching us how to do something in a way we might not have ever thought about, or reminding us of things we have not thought about for a long time. Thanks for all you do to help us improve our crafts and make us better crafts-persons, Lou. We hope you stick around for a long long time showing us new and different ways to aproach our projects and think about how to tackle the tasks at hand.

I owned a 1966 38 foot Clark’s Harbor cape islander. I fished her two years out of Boothbay Harbor ME. Most of the boats in that period were built to last about 10 years. She was 55 when I sold her. Those boats were also spruce gooses. Some of the boats built farther up the coast were built of hackmatack. Very excited to see one built with higher quality materials! Beautiful boats and more seakindly than the newer wider ones. I have a wealth of photographs of her in various states of repair and with the deck up and the inside of the hull exposed. I would be glad to share them if it could be any help.

You mentioned how in N.S. they would change their designs from time to time. My father built wooden power boats back in the tp’s-60’s. He designed his own hulls. After they were built he would take them out for a test. Then on the next one he would change the shape of the hull if he thought it was needed. I remember one test he was really throwing the boat around. He was quite impressed with the stability of that one. All those old builders learned as they went along and we’re always looking for improvements or optimizing a boat for it’s expected use. Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Thanks

I saw a guy who bought some old Novi Lobster boat from some Ancient Mariner, and fixed it up a bit for cruising around Lake Erie. Goofy, old, absent-minded professor kind of guy who went fishing in the middle of the night, was half drunk by lunch and asleep by tea time. He tried to see the sunrise two or more miles out on the lake if at all possible from April to September. That was his only goal in life, other than eating a few walleye and drinking some Scotch.

You should check out the page "Orca Rebuild." He's been working on this for several years beginning with years of research, planning, searching for parts, and finding the perfect boat to use as the base of the rebuild. And he did find the perfect boat! He's acquired screen accurate parts. He's also doing everything without ANY financial help and very little physical help from anyone. He is working on the project in his off time, as this is a project of passion and love not money. I also follow all of his social medias; He has BIG NAME followers! He's committed to doing this project. You really should check out his page and follow him on social media. ORCA REBUILD

@@FriendsandFamilyView yeah i read about that guy. Orca 3 right? But isnt that a refit of an old lobster boat? Boggelo guy right?
@FriendsandFamilyView
@FriendsandFamilyView 3 жыл бұрын
@@captaintoyota3171 No. He is not the one that planned on calling it Orca 3. That was another guy. He had people donating money and his project has stalled (at least for now), and he sold the boat that was supposed to be used. The one I am referring to is ORCA REBUILD. This guy has a Lobster Yacht that is much more accurate for the transition. He has been acquiring screen accurate parts for the rebuild for years. He's been planning and working on this for many years. Once he acquired a good boat for the rebuild, he started the process with the boat and each piece that will go on it. Currently, he has stopped work to take care of a very ill family member. Of course, we understand that family comes first. Check out his channel here on KZbin. He also has FB, IG, and an Etsy store. This is a project of love for him, as he has loved the film since he was very young. He has accepted no financial help from anyone and has no plans to. It will take longer for him, also, since he is doing most all of the work alone and on his off time. But, I've seen the boat and many of the pieces in person. It's going to be AWESOME when he's finished!

Because of the warlock was a wooden boat originally.and made into a glass boat for the moive. fiberglass Novi's are a completely different design. Another question to ask is this was the Warlock a built down Keel or was it a deadwood keel . That completely changes the shape of the Keel and the bottom of the boat

dear leo, just thinking after you apply the fiber glass on the boat body, the boat shape looks very nice, why don't you make a mold of the boat - i mean after you finish it- for the body & Deck, and start production?

Video notes, very middle age but much more interesting than modern scanners. They're so so at play by play with no idea how a back story adds value. Let's keep it that way.

I'm afraid that if you pull your garbage bag oevr the angle as you showed,you'll end up moving the fiberglass away from the corner and leaving with just the wood at the most exposed part... One does not want to apply any uneven pressure over fiberglass during curing, or it'll movefrom where there is more pressure to where these is less, just like a liquid.

Suggest vacuum bagging to get fiberglass to hug the sharp contour around the chine of the skiff
