Interesting cockpit layout. I think I'd do it differently, but if you ask ten people how to lay out a boat you'll get at least twelve opinions... LOL!

A less time consuming way to do the fiberglassing. Pre glass all the stripes on a table to as many layers as you want, fold them up and put them on a tray. Then put them at their designed place by hand just using the metal roller to help them stick temporary. After this you finnish roll all at the same time with the metal roller. We allways do it this way on HR yatch.

My suggestion is to mold a frame with a ditch and then fiberglassing in that frame, with this solution you will have the same frame in al four hatches and in the ditch you connect a hose to get rid of the water.

It’s really a nice layout! What I like about modern cockpits is that they tend to have these little pockets next to cleats and winches to store away excess control lines, sheets, halyards. I think it really helps to keep everything tidy which is really helpful if things go south.

As a kayaker (and fussy seat person) I love the taper downward of the bench seats toward the rail. I am convinced that this is conducive for comfort over the long haul for anyone but especially one with back sensitivity. The angle does something to your spine as your legs are slightly elevated depending on foot position. You will so many kayak designs with flat seats that for the life of me I cannot understand.

I built fiberglass boats in a production environment for about 25 years. They were typical molded boats, with all the gutters and drains incorporated in the molds. As such, seat hatches were no problem. I've been racking my brain to figure out how Matt is going to drain the bench and hatch systems. I took a look at the boat he referenced, La Vie en Rose, but there were no pictures of the seating system to which he made reference as a possible design solution. I'm really looking forward to seeing how solves that problem.

Huh, I can see why most production boats have cockpit seats that, if anything, slope inward to the cockpit floor. The water will end up in the right place. Yours look much more comfortable though and I think dealing with runoff will not be insurmountable. Are the seats sloped fore to aft a bit?

Great storage ...you've commented on drainage with slant back port starboard...guttering my concern would not be fresh water compromise but salt water rough seas; my comment would be strength of the top not with the lithe crew or owners 😀...but old fat man like me who, reluctantly you allow aboard, might stagger about in seas and place a 200lb plus arse in free fall upon the top... what about some Kevlar layers with superior tensile properties...

Cockpit benches are well worth the effort you are putting into them. I like the angle, don't forget about the drainage, even away from the lids and perhaps the floor, presumalby there's already a fall to the stern. Comfortable benches, perhaps perhaps much bigger radius corners, even a gently raised and curved outer edge, would add comfort. I suspect the inspector was looking for not only drains for the locker lids but also some neoprene seals to ensure they are suitable for intermittent stow aways. Having to inspect a wet locker is never pleasant, let alone if you are looking for suitable nap-space options. Then there are cushions on top, they need to be secure and at comfortable angle, when the conditions are just right, zzzzzz.

Another wonderful video, thank you so much....ok, here goes.....silly question time. So, I have been looking at the door of the dog house for sometime and am wondering why it is so small? It looks like one will need to bend down just to get through it. I'm sure and have no doubt that there is a perfectly excellent explanation OR I have it all wrong lol which would be no surprise. Anyhow, wishing you well, and sending good energy....Neil.
@TheDuracellProject
@TheDuracellProject Жыл бұрын
Hey Neil, it can’t be much bigger. It needs structure above it to carry the load of the traveler and below it there needs to be material to prevent water from sloshing into the boat. Most boats have a companion way where you step down into the boat. Doesn’t bother us to have to stoop into the boat. That’s how we had it on our old boat Louise😊
