This week on the home renovation front we get our three design plans back from the architects.
These plans are different layouts for this old abandoned house, for the structure, for the outbuildings and for the extension designs.
Living in the woods we want lots of outdoor space and by bringing in architects they will make the most of that for us. We’re VERY excited to show you them!
We also need a little help deciding on which one is best or if a mixture of them all is the way to go!
In the meantime we’re still working on excavating the land that will create a car park eventually
.
Renovation on the house is still underway but right now it’s all the boring bits! We still need to demolish some of the inside walls in the cottage.
This home make over seems to take a lot longer when we’re on our own! Haha can’t wait to show you the before and after of the land space! She’s a beauty…

Totally agree. Option 1 is better than 2 because some will like the aesthetic of an L shaped home. But it doesn't take advantage of the external or internal spaces. Just not as nice to actually live in I think. Option 3 is significantly better IMO, really nice. The simple elongation of the OG property means you create less dark damp corners (I know its been sunny but it is Scotland we live in, lol) and perfectly separates outdoor spaces to 1: The Entrance Patio, 2: Front Entertaining Patio + Views and 3: Private rear Lawn. So good to have that variance of outdoor space close to the home. Aesthetically the change in materials is your visual separation old/new and the timber finish: preferably Scottish Larch can be light grey or a slight pink hue to match the stone work. Gorgeous. The interior is what makes No.3 the winner IMO, as an architect I value the usability of space design over all. Heres why I say that: The entrance porch & coat/mud room is great and to me makes a home feel lived in and less grandiose. To the left + upstairs you can have 'the more private house' to the right 'everyone house', allows you to make the left living room your own evening haven with views out to the west for sunset. The right of the house is the activity hub, the kitchen the daytime living are and the snug with a knitting, games or reading room vibe. Presumably a beautiful open double height space will make this side of the house feel so much larger and having the folding doors open to entertain on the patio will be epic. The downstairs Utility and Bathroom at the back is essential and centrally placed for functionality and privacy, downstairs bathroom is always a winner. Now I would personally make some changes/additions to the plans. Here what i'm thinking: Change 1 - Option 2 had that 3rd bedroom, why cant option 3 have a cozy 3rd sleeping area? I would put a 2/3 up landing before the left turn on the stairs, going to a right landing that could access a toilet or bunk room. Utilising the roof space of the entrance (perfect for a tiny Scottish window too). Don't know the exact dimensions so you might need to move the front extension apex a foot higher, but no big deal at this stage. Change 2: If you do want it as a bunk room and can allow for the cost then you could put a rear dormer window for a wee toilet and micro sink in the middle of the landing. Could even be done in timber like a actual 'water closet'. Right above the bathroom so easy to plumb in. Change 3: Cost/structure dependant, I would move the Utility room wall 1 foot into the snug just to give a bit more room for bathroom/utility, the snug can be snugger without any loss. Change 4: The fire place is so important to get right, make sure you spend plenty of time designing it to suit your aesthetic and functional needs. Lots of ways to change this with an island fireplace or a u shape each changing the relationship between snug and sitting area. Change 5: only caught a glimpse of these in the 3d render, but I would probably make the two rear windows in the kitchen/sitting area full height, maybe a bit wider too. Matching the size of the existing is a nice idea but just isnt optimal and wont match the more modern internal look of the folding glass doors to the front. Those windows are likely to give your best wildlife views on the lawn, so maximising them would be good IMO. Change 6: Might just be the model rendering or that its too early but: I would change the cladding timber pattern on the kitchen external gable end. I would keep the lower and sides around the window vertical and then do a gradual rotation from vertical to 45 at the apex above the window. Like a woven timber arch. Personal preference on that though really. Change 7: If you do need more storage or space for water tanks etc, remember you can have a loft area for a meter or two above the 'sitting area' if needed. Still allowing for high ceilings there and full height in the kitchen. Alternatively this could be the 3rd bed/bunk location if you wanted to use the entrance roof space for storage. Just some ideas, hope it give you some inspiration if you read it. Overall 3 is a lovely design and I think it will be so nice to live in. Cant wait to see the design unfold.

Option #3 - I feel you guys would love having that extra sitting space next to the kitchen...especially when you have guests over! And, who wouldn't want that awesome kitchen window that "frame the surrounding woodlands" - which is one of the main reasons you guys were so attracted to this land in the first place. Who wouldn't love creating meals while being able to see that beautiful forest - and watching the birds dining at The Fat Bird Café! 🐦🌲= 👍

I also like 1 or 3. Don't 'fake' and extension so that it looks like it's always been there - just add a new extension which blends but is clearly a new build. Sad that none of the options seem to have skylights...? Especially in the old cottage area. I live in a temperate rain forest and skylights make a huge difference during the dark, rainy months

@@nickislade5533 To some degree they certainly will allow more light into the space but not nearly as much as skylights/roofligjhts. Architect here: As you go through your day-to-day, imagine living in each of the options! List the pros and cons. (For example, if you have to use the washroom in the night, one plan might work better than the others.) Don’t be afraid to give your designer/architect tons of feedback! It’s their job to do the best they can and ask for a choice when your wants/needs conflict. Prioritize your wants and needs where feasible, and it’ll allow them to make choices for you. A good designer will note the wants and needs that their design doesn’t meet - this will allow you to offer feedback to make final tweaks. Best of luck!

In my opinion, the option no. 1 is the best one with the best views to the front, best layout combination of original and new, and best outdoor indoor space connection. You could make a lovely outdoor sitting porch in front of the big glass doors and also glorify the original building in new form which made you and us fall in love at once because if you want everything changed and new you can demolish the building and make a new one easily. But at the end of the day it is you guys who are the best because you know the real picture. What you love we love more...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I think options 3 would be even better if you kept the back addition with an upstairs bathroom. Under the back addition you could have a walk in closet and bathroom and use the "living room" as an owner suite/main bedroom. The head height would be so much better, you would have more sunlight with better views, and you could walk out onto the patio. The two upstairs rooms could be for guests or an office space.

Option 3!! Because: - the entrance makes sense - you don’t know how big the house is from the outside/driveway - blends in best while taking full advantage of the length of the view - does it have the massive window that looks out to the forest? That would be magic!! And, a great place to grow indoor plants & seedlings Feb-May that can then be put in the garden - a dual sided fireplace?!? Absolutely yes!!!! Thank you for the Aurora views!! Pure magic that. Leave feeding the birds to the winter months!! when they have less natural food options!! They have plenty the rest of the time, no need to entice them & help them forget how to find food (at least, that’s what my birder parents taught me. Could be that the scientists have developed new understanding since the 70’s, when I was taught that 😂 Worth looking into). You spark joy in me you two!!

What a large undertaking. Your excitement and passion for this house make me excited about it. Your ideas and the work is clearly going to take a long time. Plenty of content for years to come. I say take breaks so that you don't get burned out and care for the other aspects of your life that also fuel your soul. Especially since I watched so many other channels with renovations, they've all mirrored this advice. I just search their channel and see if a new video is up. If not, I check back the next week. Some of my faves who do this are Colinfurze, Tyler & Todd, Emon & Bec (which is how I fall y'all), I thoroughly enjoy your content. The creativity you put into your videos is so entertaining. I can tell you put a lot of thought and time into it. Example: The content/ ideas you come up with to film, doing said idea, filming it with detail, the high energy and jokes you bring into filming, added creative sponsors, and finally editing it to include all of this in a way that tells a good story thay also makes people smile. ❤ Thank you!

Aimee, I love your wee bird house! It’s so exciting to get to see what creatures live in your area. I have a couple of tips for you 😊. Be patient, it can take a couple of weeks for birds to visit your feeders, they are cautious of new structures. Position them near trees as they like to perch there and look out for predators before visiting the feeder. You could also get a few other feeders for seeds etc as different birds prefer different food. Also, you should visit your local RSPB reserve and have a chat with them about what species to expect in your area. They can give you great tips and help with ID of anything you are unsure about!

Option 1 for me. Keeps more of the character.

I like option 3 best but something for you to consider, the direction of your windows. If you have south or west facing windows that shine onto a stone wall the wall will actually hold heat during the day and release the heat into the house at night saving on your heating bill particularly evident during the winter months. South facing windows will have less glare across it than a west or east facing window which are prone to this issue and can totally kill a view which we all know you love. Increased natural light some place like a dining room or kitchen can actually stimulate your appetite and help with symptoms of depression. As a design I like the look of 3 best closely followed by option 1 because it also has big windows and I love the look of natural light.

I love option 1 as it keeps the original cottage there as much as possible, but I also love option 3 too! -

Option 3!! The front door location is much more natural in my opinion! Also creates a great yard :)

Birdies always take a couple of weeks to suss out a new feeder and decide to make use. They will come. Word will spread. Also....option 1 👍🏼👍🏼

Option 3 ftw! So much light in the house where you actually spend a lot of time. 3 it is for me.

I like the way Option 1 looks the best, but I think Option 3 makes the most sense. It would be nice if you could get an extra 1/2 bath somewhere 🚽

Option 1! Love how the cottage stays intact. Love the back mudroom conept. Maybe borrow from #3, and put a downstairs bathroom in the new storage area.

Option 3 if your having an extension then definitely worth going big .. you will never regret it after all the work is finished.

Definitely option 3 as love the increased use of glass from option 1 to make the most of the view. I also like the extension being long so it's tucked behind the original cottage on approach!

Our family is in the construction industry in South Florida, and I feel that the best design is #3 or a mix of 1 & 3. We are so proud of you, congratulations on your new home and new adventure!

Option 1 or 3 for sure! I really like the big windows and feel that those too add to the original cottage vibe, option 2 somehow hides it and I don't like the white too much there. thank you so much for the video, it is always a blessing to see you

Option 1!!!! It looks the most seemless, allows you to keep the original facade of the front of the house, but also allows for your extentions. I like the look of the extentions from 1 and 3, the extension from 2 doesn't match as well , BUT the 2 way fireplace from option 3 does sound pretty cool
