Bad news about the 'forest' (actually a monocrop tree farm - extremely low in biodiversity). But you could maybe use this as an opportunity to purchase some of the clear-felled land around you and plant it with a diverse mix of native woodland species? Every cloud has a silver lining and that! 😊 Word to the wise though, when they clear fell it can cause a mass exodus of voles and weavils which attack trees on neighbouring properties as they have nowhere left to go.

Usually these commercial forests here ins Scotland are not native species of trees, so they often aren’t great for local wildlife insects etc. maybe you can propose being able to cultivate a broader area behind your property yourselves and commit to planting native species of trees and hedges, and propose it as a ecological initiative partnership to them? Often these companies are looking to say they are being ecologically sustainable etc, so maybe they’d be open, and you could have some lovely Scottish trees behind your place that could fill out over time? Just a thought. Sorry you’ll lose the peaceful forest feel though. I used to live on the edge of a commercial forest in a different part of Scotland and it definitely has a special feel of calm even if it’s non native trees and a business at the end of the day ❤

I was going g to say something along these lines. I would do trees on my side of the fence. I.E. above where the car park will be, where the trampoline is, etc. I also think the patio you did that and they do the proposed trees across the fence then it would be about the same or not as bad as no trees at all.

Yes this was my thinking. This is something we are thinking about as well as we are surrounded on two sides pretty much by commercial forests and know one day they will be gone… so thinking of planting native trees along our boundary… but we also get loads of deer so would need some good fencing for when they are young!

Aww, I love you two. I hope you read this ❤ I’m so sorry you’re losing the forest. I live in Edinburgh and have been growing an oak sapling for 6 years. When I got him he was a single twig with 2 tiny leaves, I called him Phil (Oakey). He’s now a strapping 6ft. Anyway, what I was trying to say is, we were planning on buying a little wood where we could plant him and he’d be safe to live a long happy life, unfortunately that hasn’t happened. So, because you two are wonderful people I’d really like to give him to you, he’d be safe & free to stretch his limbs (he’s currently in a very big pot) and I know you’d look after him. I don’t have a big enough garden for him 😢 Let me know if you’d like him. Not a forest, but a start ❤

Those trees are Sitka spruce and when l first saw your video l thought it would not be long before they are harvested, they are grown because they are fast growing, however nothing grows under them and wildlife is scares because they are so dense and a lack of light.. You may get a great surprise at what comes up after they are felled, ie bluebells and foxgloves. Work with the forestry owners about what they replant near your house you want so broadleaf, or even better Scottish heritage fruit trees. Also talk to them about a picking licence, with this you can pick up leftover felled wood, you cant use a chainsaw but could carry out firewood and maybe some pieces that can be used for projects.

Every house we bought had gorgeous trees around it, making a natural haven. And within a year, the adjacent lot was clear-cut & a house put as close to our property line as possible! So we made sure to BUY the adjacent lots when we got our retirement property (something we previously couldn't afford to do).

Sorry to hear the trees are going to be harvested, but it is obviously a plantation which has reached its max height and age. I’d definitely be looking at growing a border of native tree and shrub species pronto, so you won’t have to look at the mess left behind.

Hi folks, fun video, thank you. In terms of decking or even better other options to suit your property I would make a stone patio (or slate) with stone paths to it, you seem to have plenty of stone and I would plant silver birch trees at the back corners for shade. On the banking, lavender, creeping thyme, evergreen jasmine (nice smelling) would be great with an alpine rockery on the slope that you can develop over time. A wild flower meadow area at the back of the patio would also be great.

I would start planting some quick growing saplings so in 20 yrs when they take out the trees next to your property you have a bit of a buffer. I'm lucky, I live in BC Canada where we have giant cedars surrounding us.

The right tool for the job is your friend. Soil, rocks, etc. are way too heavy to move such quantities by hand. Rent a little Bobcat/skid steer to help.

When my husband and I bought our house 8 years ago, 2 of the selling points for us was the empty lot beside our house FILLED with suuuuuper tall trees (I think they were a type of fir, it's been so long I don't remember ) and the acre field surrounded by trees directly across the road. Within 6 months, a developer bought the lot beside us and chopped every single tree down, including the one on our property that had to be left on the other side of the fence we installed. They chopped em down, then ripped the roots out. I'm still angry AND heartbroken about it. I can still remember the ground shaking every time they dropped a massive stump with massive roots to "shake" the dirt off. And I'm still incredibly annoyed, especially since every person who has lived in those apartments has been a freaking problem (including a REALLY awful cop who thought he could get away with anything, us knowing the sheriff was the only thing that kept him even a little under control). I feel for you guys! And send love and hope yall are granted SOME remaining trees 🌳

@Yvonne-qn9lh even if we could have afforded the additional acre, it wasn't for sale. The guy who bought it was a developer and put in the bid directly to the city. He bought another lot on the corner parallel to the acre beside our house. And the acre beside us and behind the apartments is city owned (community plot with an old basketball court and fencing and stuff). It was never an option.

As someone who lives in the Pacific Northwest of USA we are surrounded by tree plantations. Don't fret! You will be shocked at how quickly the trees respond once they are replanted. Trees can only sequester so much carbon, when they get to be a certain size. Planting new trees allows for more carbon sequestering. My one tip is to be careful when driving around log trucks. Lots of fatalities in my area from dropped logs on the road.

I was just going to write the same thing. I also live in the PNW. Prepare yourself, listening to trees bring felled is gut-wrenching and the aftermath looks horrifying. BUT, the ability of the forest to regenerate is amazing to see. The first year will be horrible but then the grasses and weeds grow up, then the wildflowers, then the deciduous weed trees and slowly the replanted evergreens.

Ok so as a forester I couldn’t let this one go unaddressed. Unfortunately, this is really not a realistic take on trees and carbon sequestration. Yes, their ability to sequester carbon slows as they age, but they become exponentially more efficient when it comes to actually storing the carbon in the second half of their life. When the trees are cut down, that carbon is then rapidly released into the atmosphere. The natural process (a tree falling or becoming a dead standing tree) releases the carbon back into the atmosphere at a much slower rate as they decompose. Just wanted to make sure you’re grasping the full picture and not justifying massive tree cutting operations by giving a blanket statement that the new trees will be able to sequester more carbon since they’re younger.

We built a composite deck in our back yard. We love it... Just note that the surface does get HOT in the sun, making it very uncomfortable on bare feet. The darker the colour, the hotter it gets. Pick your colour with that in mind.

We live right in the middle of a 1600 acre tree forest. Three years ago they harvested all the trees. It took them 2 years. This last spring they replanted all the trees. Within 5 years they will be a good 10-15 feet tall. It broke my heart to see them come down but... being able to see a full sunrise and sunset every day made up for it! ❤

The Woodland trust has a good selection of native trees and can supply as many as you need to build a screen on your side of the boundary. The different packs they offer cover a good range of different tree varieties depending on your location and environment.

Grow your own veg in raised beds on the sunny bedrock section! You'll already have bees around for the wildflowers and will save money on produce, plus they'll be organic. You can also plant native Scottish trees or trees for a temperate rainforest climate along the border of your property to create a screen. Fir, pine, maple, alder, elm, and dogwood would do well.

So, the joints between the stones is lime mortar. Lime render, if you have to, would be the best way to cover any unsightly walls. It breaths, but cement doesn’t. Hence, mold and dampness. Cement should only be used for structural elements, not cladding. They did that tree felling on Skye. Per the Living The Skye Life channel. They were sad about it, too. It was a large area.

Composite decking is actually really good. We have a house which sees extreme weather in the winter, and the decking is easy to shovel, sweep or hose off depending on the time of year. The best part is it doesn't warp, splinter, or rot in cold or heat. It's not bad for choice of colors. Grey usually looks good against most backdrops. Does your land end at the fence? Whether it does or not start planting trees now. Ask your local experts which trees are native, quick growing, and sturdy against Scottish weather. Add a few evergreens for a difference. They grow slower, but they do grow sturdy. Don't plant them too close together, they spread like a middle-aged backside from too many biscuits!

The problem with decking is how slippery it gets which in our climate limits the amount of time it can realistically be used. We have installed a rubber coated one which we can use all year round. We bought ours from a company called Rubbadeck. Would recommend you looking into it.

I live about 150 yards from the bank of the Jefferson river in the Montana Rockies....its still spring runoff, we actually had 4 inches of snow last tuesday morning.... today its 80 .... but I swim in a side channel every warm afternoon...today I saw a cow moose and her calf, beaver, otter muskrat mink and deer, white pelican soared thousands of feet above, on their six foot wingspan, bald eagles in the cottonwoods, Ospreys feeding their nestling warblers dashing through the undergrowth, the air filled with the olive drake hatch ...rivers ....are astounding places in my heart...

I wouldn't be to worried about the tree work. Hopefully they will replace with native broadleaf trees. The forest being taken isn't very good for soil as it's acidic leaf litter and lack of light for ground plants. Ask if that is the plan for at least some of the restock. You can see that it's a commercial forest - the trees are too close together - so no sunlight hits the forest ground. Hopefully they will do a selective cutting - just thin it out so the existing trees can actually flourish. OOppps - I commented too quickly. Sadly, it sounds like it will look a forest graveyard. Remember that darker colors for the synthetic decking will get hotter and hold heat 🥵 which will make it uncomfortable on bate feet and sitting out on it in sunny summer weather. The grey color will be cooler, not reflect sunlight making it easier on your eyes, and will work with the colors you're doing on the house.

I've worked in mapping timber properties in the US. If you have access to tax parcel maps in Scotland you can try and propose a 15 meter buffer along your property line. Send this to the property owner. They could be generous preserving that buffered area, you can provide them the funds they would normally make off those trees, or propose to buy a portion of the timber property. Pine trees are pretty resistant to wind gusts, more than most trees, so I don't see them blowing over if there is a thin buffer of them.

You guys are my favourite youtubers. You always put a smile on my face. Environmental student here so my suggestion would be to grow all native wildflowers above the driveway. The diversity of plants is helpful for all sorts of insects, birds, and small rodents. A new home if your forest has to go and much better than monoculture grass lawns that provide no habitat for widlife and require a lot of pesticides to keep looking nice.

As someone who works in forestry I think we need to do a better job of explaining what we do. Commercial forests are felled and restocked in phases so that there’s less impact on the environment than if a whole forest was felled at once. The government approves the forest plans to make sure deforestation isn’t happening. Scotland is also planting more new forests than the rest of the UK combined! Love watching the progress you’re making with the house ❤

Yes that all sounds lovely, until your the house bang smack in the middle of a forest and that was one of the main reasons you bought the house. Phase deforestation on a commercial scale is a horrific scale for a laymen person in a house, whose idea of scale is a few shrubs. It looks and feels like total Armageddon for "normal" person. And it is not comforting for them in their home to be, watching their space destroyed, thinking oh well at least they are starting a new forest in other parts of Scotland. Sorry I have lived through it and it was hell for us and our beautiful wildlife.

@@kcmorris4875 I totally agree, it was a nightmare for me…chain saws going from 6:30AM to 4:30 PM…the thud you hear and shaking of the house when a tree hits the ground. The only peace you get is when they stop working for the day. Missing the wildlife that used to walk through there that doesn’t anymore. And this was just select cutting that I lived through, on just 6 acres!! I have lived a long life, and have lived through many things successfully, but I have PTSD from that. I am really pissed that they will have to go through this.

I have an idea for retaining the stone walls. You could create a deep shelf within the new stud and insulated wall, leaving the stone wall as the backdrop. This way, you preserve some of the original wall’s charm with a decorative shelf while insulating the rest of the room.

The planted forest you showed is an ecogical desert; it will be much improved as the single-species of fully-grown trees (which block all sun from reaching the ground) start to be removed, allowing a more diverse undergrowth that wildlife need for food & cover. My husband & I manage our 200 acre wildlife habitat in the Ozarks of Arkansas, and it's now brimming with deer, turkey, bobcats, etc.

The land isn't suitable for housing so that won't happen in Aberdeenshire. It is poor quality hill ground turned into a commercial forest. The land is plantation. It may look like paradise, but the only bit of green is the tree tops and one side of the trees on the border. Unfortunately it is nothing more but an environmental desert.

on the whole breeze block problem, have you thought about putting wood cladding along the breeze block section? the wood would look gorgeous next to the granite walls and it would look like more of a feature rather than having fake granite, which I'm sure you would be able to tell that its not real since it will be right up next to the real stuff, plus it would match the new extension. anywho, love the fab work guys, can't wait to see more! 😍

Regarding the area at the top of the car port terrace: because it’s so sunny, you might think about putting some raised beds in and growing food? If you’re able to put up deer fencing, or put coverings over the beds themselves, it would be a lovely spot to grow your own food!

Landscaping idea for up the stairs from the carport....most light equals great spot for veg/fruit garden. If you're not ready to start a vegetable/raised garden with everything else going on.....plant some berry bushes! In a year or two while the coffee is brewing, you take a little stroll and gather a fresh bowl full for breakfast. Good idea to plant your berry patch garden a little ways away from your house or patio area because they can make the ground/pathway areas a little messy. Bonus it will attach the birds and other wildlife, and love to be planted near flower garden with all the pollinators.

The trees had been planted for harvesting after 30-50 years then replanting. The forest is not a forest, it’s a plantation. They are all over Scotland.

The upper area above the wildflowers is a great veg garden space. Most veg need full sun so the more the better when planning on growing food...plants eat sunlight and turn in to food

I just got a message from of friend of mine in Britain who suggested writing the King of England who is very into saving the environment. He may be interested in letting a large portion of the trees to be allowed to become "old growth trees", but he does not know this forest is set for clear cutting. Make it known. Broadcast it loud. This is how we did it in Washington State. We saved our forests and a very important Delta. Nisqually Delta. Fight, fight like hell.

Re the bird feeder. Maybe buy a cheap plastic tarp Cut it down to size to fit the base. It can easily be lifed out and replaced. You can also hose it down to clean it up. ( Or buy a tray to insert )

I live on the edge of a managed forest. They often thin out the woodland and cut down large areas. These come back quite quickly after replanting and the forest floor comes to life due to the extra light. I know it’s nice to look out onto a forest but sadly you do not buy a protected view when you buy a house. A managed forest being replanted it so much better than a housing estate being built on rolling fields.

About the tree felling; We have had 90% of our forest beetle killed and subsequently much fire mitigation. You will be amazed at how quickly the saplings start growing and all of the new vegetation that will thrive with more light. It will be ok.

Yeah, trees grow fast. Years ago, I visited a town in Australia where a major fire had recently burnt down the local forest. Very little was left of it. When I visited the same town again five years later, the burnt-down forest looked like an actual forest again -- young, but very much alive. I was astonished at the amount of regrowth. It was very impressive.

My sister in law helped her partner to renovate a very very old cottage and what you could do is the part of the wall that is not stone plaster over it and paint it but don’t do a straight line do it wonky so it looks unique. Hers look beautiful a mixture of natural stone and plaster painted in a complimentary colour.

Here's a thought for everyone who is sad about the forest: stop using papertowels, paper napkins, disposable chop sticks etc, and switch to TP made of recycled paper, or swiftly renewable bamboo.

By the looks of the forest there is a bit of disease . I live in Idaho and have 15 acres of forest next to state forest and the same thing happened here. The good news is nature is very quick to fill in logging devastation with plants you never thought to see. It takes two years to get going but you will enjoy watching the transformation of a new forest emerging.
