@FastRedPonyCar3 жыл бұрын
TL;DR - "Dream" rig is basically a fairy tale and long-term 100% satisfaction is unattainable. Be happy with "close enough" where you don't feel like you compromised even if it's not 100% what you dream of. I've been fortunate enough to buy my dream rig a couple of times now and I say that because I spent years lusting over what I thought was going to be the ultimate amp (Bogner Esctacy) and once I got it, it was ok but I realized it just wasn't the right amp for me. Oh well a Mesa Mark IV or V is what I REALLY need! Well I had both of those... Borrowed a IV and bought a V and played both at a few shows and the IV was pretty good but not exactly what I was after and the V was more flexible but didn't have the voicing I wanted so I moved on other amps and other amps and the idea of a "Dream" rig had all but totally evaporated. Choice paralysis and knob/switch overload with the Mesa's pushed me to the opposite end of the spectrum and I got a 50w Silver Jubilee and despite still owning and absolutely LOVING the amp, it's not a dream amp. It was just a more tame and less angry and slightly more flexible version of my Nitro (which I still also own and love). Something more powerful but not voiced as mean as the Nitro? Fine I'll get 100w modded super lead. Nope. Great amp but not a dream amp. Like wrestling a bear on stage and the FX loop is garbage but I get why people love them and will probably eventually get it modded more too. Next? I got a custom built 50w SLO and it 100% satisfied me... for a while... hands down the best stage amp I've ever played. Hugely clear sound, hits like 100w amp, sits perfectly in the mix but being all analog left me with tons of cables all over the stage. Maybe something like a Helix or Quad cortex would be better? Our singer has both. So I tried his Helix LT and it was OK sound-wise but hugely impressive with it's routing and flexibility that pushed my brain to the "I need an AxeFX now" place because despite spending a couple weeks with the Quad Cortex and really enjoying it's flexibility and ease of use on stage, it's a half-baked product right now and that's a big price tag for something that still needs lots of features to compete with the rest of the market. I bought in early with the Kemper and waited ages for it to mature and I don't want to go through that again so here I am with the AxeFX III but the SLO is still on stage but serving as the power section for my stage tone. I have the power and the sound of the SLO and a good cab (port city OS 2x12 with scumbacks) with the world class effects of the Fractal, the ability to send great amp sim tone out straight to the house, run a mic channel through the fractal for EQ/Comp/effects, etc. Basically my point is that once you think you're at the finish line, you realize nothing is perfect and you take what you did and didn't like about this stuff and slowly start to form this subconscious list in your head of what you ACTUALLY need and as you start to dwell on that, you start looking elsewhere for different gear ideas that you wouldn't necessarily have considered before. I was 95% happy "close enough" with the Jubilee, my JHS Klon boost and the Stomp HX in the FX loop, a rig I had maybe $2500 total invested in but I got greedy and all the "what if's" got the best of me and I fell down that rabbit hole.

I actually saved for a long time and bought my dream rig, which currently is a PRS Brent Mason in a Two-Rock Studio Signature head with a Marshall 2061cx Vertical 2x12” cab. And for pedal, I have one of the best Klon clone with the Decibelics Golden Horse… The only potential change I might do at some point is go for a PRS Silver Sky; I’m just reluctant of the 7.25” radius.
@12breacher823 жыл бұрын
That was rad! I’d love to goof off in that place. But I’ve been fortunate enough to have several “dream rigs” over the years and as gear comes and goes I’ve settled on the KSR Ares 6550 tubed head for modern stuff, SLO 30 for everything else. I run them through a Soldano vertical 2x12, stock, and that does it. Those G12H Anniversary speakers are sick; I have one in a 1x12 Zilla Fatbaby and it sounds ridiculously good. If I had the ability to have a bigger dream rig it would be custom Friedman JJ-100 w/ the Butterslax Mod, depth and a few other switches; Zilla Cab 4x12 with G12H Anniversaries on top, UK V30s on the bottom. LWA pedals Burning Spirit OD, Acheron Reverb/Delay, Shattered Reflection and Void Multi-FX, Tannhauser dual gate, Dunlop Cantrell Wah. I’d also consider going full custom with Dave Friedman, to make an old school death metal amp, but it would have to have a JBE mod/switch. Big money stuff right there.

The Helix effects are terrific and I can use it’s amp models with the tube peer from the 5150. The SLO model and Placater model from Helix sound terrific this way. And I have a great 4x12. Any volume I want from bedroom levels to full volume. I can build any 3 number of 3 channel rigs I want with all the effects I could ever need. I’m very happy.

Beautiful rigs with amazing sound. That people are moving away from and playing Fractals and Helix's live. I love the SLO. And have always thought about buying one, but never will at this point because I just don't need it. I barely play my Mesa Mark V anymore and just use the Fractal FM3. And I'm eyeballing skipping the FM9 and just go full AXE-FX rig. Sadly things have changed and lots of players are moving away from these awesome tube amp rigs. Seeing a player with a half stack may be like seeing a unicorn.

Nice choices guys, but it always makes me smile when people highlight systems/tricks to stop the jack pulling out accidentally - back in the day (I'm pushing 60) the whole point was that it would pull out without damaging anything ie pulling the instrument off it's strap/toppling the head off a stack etc! Better silence than destroyed gear?? 😀

Dream setup: 1 guitar, 1 amp, 1 Cabinet, 1 pedal! Line 6 USA JTV-89F, Line 6 Spider V Mk II 240w RMS Head (with 4 inch internal speakers at 40w RMS), Yamaha 2x12", Line 5 FBV3 floor controller. I have many others but my list above can literally do it all... Line 6 USA JTV-89F Guitar can be several different instruments including 12 string, Baritone, Sitar, Banjo, violin, piano, synthesizer, choir... anything you can download! Mk II Spider V amp can sound exactly like "all other" amps/cabs combinations and any effects you want, if not already inside, anything can be downloaded. The Line 6 4x12" is strained by the 200w RMS of head unit power (plus 40w RMS into built-in 4-inch speakers) so I got the Yamaha w/ mismatched “Eminence Legend1218” and “The Tonker 12" drivers, (switchable mono or stereo operation, you can choose which driver to partner with which amp). FBV3 footboard controls it all! The guitar costs more than the rest of the gear put together, and very much worth it (even if like me, you have to go with the foreign-made JTV90F Bstock, which is still my best guitar).
