We are burning more circles today talking about the advantages of burning circles (using the circle burner) when building pipe fence vs. copping pipe. I’ve done it both ways and sometimes you simply can’t use the circle burner but why do I like it more? I’m sharing all that with you in today’s video. I think this fence is coming along nicely! What do you think so far?

That’s the nicest pipe fence I’ve ever seen!!! I worked as a welder helper for years for an older welder. That old man was a surgeon with a cutting torch and he could cut beautiful saddles. We didn’t do any fence work just pipeline. Good money hard work. 😀

Inches - for me less room for error. KISS, 1 benefit to cutting holes in upright pipe also allows condensation to flow out of the lateral pipe and down the post pipe- longevity is key. In this example your pipe is most likely 1/4” thick so won’t effect your build. However, some lateral pipe is much thinner and can benefit from “drying out”. As far as saddles are concerned, it’s good to be cross trained in both methods. Diversity keeps your game up. As you put it-learn something new every day. Great entrance!!!!!!! Quality work

BTW, this fence is GORGEOUS! Carpenter opinion; the hole cutting has got to be a better system over coping overall. Once your line posts cut to length, you can jig cut your holes then set the posts using several methods to save time and provide a superior result. Then just cut horizontals (which can be rough cut within 1/2" because of length play allowed by this system)... You can even dry fit/assemble long runs, fine tune straightness and then weld up...I love it man! One beast of a fence too

Hey Austin, a couple of things for you if you do not mind. Why not invest in a suitcase wirefeeder? It makes for faster welding, quicker restarts, and moving from joint to joint for situations such as the pipe fencing. Secondly, if you built an adjustable stand, you could use a quality chopsaw, which with the right blade, you can rip through the pipe, save time and reduce the O2/act expense. If I have any fieldwork like this, that is the method I use. Appreciate the vids, reminds me of my youth in OK.

FEET and INCHES for me for basic layout. If I am multiplying or dividing ( Feet / Inches / Fractions ) with a basic calculator, I find it easier to use the Metric System. I recently had to lay out a 4 [uneven] hole pattern in a plate, and found it easier to use METRIC to find the Hypotenuse [cross corners] to check for the holes being square --- using the Pythagorean theorem. C squared = A squared + B squared or {{C = the square root of A squared + B squared}} "C" being the Hypotenuse Dividing uneven FEET [1, 3, 5, 7, 9 etc.] then adding that to inches can get tricky if you are not careful. The same goes for fractions of an inch. By using Metric, you don't have to convert Inches [to decimal feet] nor fractions [to decimal inches]. Metric is basically already is a decimal number system for use with a cheap calculation. Some Scientific Calculators can readily handle Feet-Inches-Fractions straight away [without converting]. This all works for me. DEG44401

One question: if I wanted to burn sweet circles in vertical plate/pipe with your circle burner… what torch do you recommend for that job? A high end/low end option would be cool. Beautiful job on the fence! Thatsa lotsa pipe! I would bet, being the good welder you are, that you could have hand cut all those cross pipes much faster than rigging up the mechanical cutter. Since the pipes are stuck into the holes on the posts, you don't have to worry about a perfect cut since it will never be seen.

Brother, you just CAN'T be an inch guy where I work. It HAS to be feet and inches. You're crazy if you don't. Also, I just realized how valuable this course is for people. Yall are so passionate about what you do and want othes to learn what you know and avoid the same mistakes you made to get here. At home, we just use cedar posts and telephone poles. Otherwise I'd be all over paying for the class. You mentioned learning something new every day... Made a big mistake this week that cost me almost half a day by not putting enough tacks on some thin gauge before plug welding where our prints said to do. Lesson here is to add a TON of tacks before you start welding anything!

Inches I like your fancy tool, but what's wrong with setting the pipe in a portable pipe vice with a "V" chanel and the other end on a pipe stand, rotating it with a pipe wrench, while you cut once, not twice? A good bit less pricey, I'd wager, cutting following a chalk line . As for through-holes vs saddling, I can install two runs to your one. I cut a "v" and flat-grind the pointy ends, then stitch the gap with weld. Also, your way REQUIRES two sizes of pipe and two setups. Looks nice, but I'm stickin' to old school. I could see punching holes, if I were using sucker rod, because sometimes it's magnetized and has to be torch-heated as I weld, to make it l penetrate, but building horizontal runs with sucker rod never happens.

To answer your question I personally use both methods of measurement typically tho in an explanation to what I’m measuring I’ll say it’s 9’ 8” instead of the inches, I guess so it’s better understood cause you kinda know what 9 feet looks like but you don’t know what 108” looks like and you have to go how long it 108 again? So in short I guess I use both but more so inches when works being done. Now my question I have for ya…. Do you think it uses a bit more pipe not saddling your ends I see the slight waste from your throat cut so instead your using it on the inside of the hole in your upright? Anyway hope that question made since.
