Common guys he's not building the "Great Wall of China". It's different style of wall which makes it unique. A great stone mason is the one who put his heart and passion into his work. He could say come to American so you can learn how to build a classic skyscraper like the Empire State Building made of Indiana lime stone. Let Scotland be Scotland. Great job Dave

Hello, did you use still bar in the structure to reinforce it? I am going to start to build a similar wall and I am wondering whether a trench filled with trench mesh and steel bar in the wall is overkill? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

@angelambryant Very accurate statement. But you should also know that many brands of modern 'Masonry cement' leave out the lime and replace it with microscopic air bubbles to give the mortar the properties that lime traditionally provided. Some of these masonry cements keep their 'workability' properties longer than traditional lime mortar, but some will argue that the air bubble (masonry cement) does not bind and hold the bricks, stone, whatever as well and thoroughly as traditional mortr

not a bad wall..in austalia we prefer to use flat faces rocks, the rocks u use would probably be hard to split. I spose there is all different sorts of walls and the one you have chosen suits the location, kinda looks a bit ancient tho..im a stone mason, i absolutely love using sandstone, i have used similar round rocks before however in my opinion those rocks only look good dry stacked for a cheapy if u ever get the chance jump on the net n have a look at some one the work we do in aus

We hired Dave, a master stonemason, who had laid stone and built walls and steps for us before. What really counts is that we love the wall and consider it a work of fine art, built to last more than a lifetime.

Amazing job! Was any rebar used in the build?
@narutodbzloveryah
@narutodbzloveryah 7 жыл бұрын
no rebar needed usually you build a footing fill it with rubble and build up the wall with face rocks and continue the cycle of filling gaps with rubble then face rock until it's complete

@crazystoneworker "the wall has 6'' inch thick footing w/ a width 4'' inches wider than the wall on both sides, at the back side ,at the base of footing a 4 ''inch drain tile is layed and drain rock covers it to the top of footing than ground cloth,to keep dirt out than back filled to desired leavel. Cheers ds Stoneman"

Angela Bryant, don't feed the trolls; everyone has a different style of doing things. Weather, skill/style, and personal preference dictate how one builds anything. As long as the customer is happy, and said wall is structurally sound, that is all that matters. I was taught by an old mason with 40 plus years of experience, and I use 2:1 ratio Portland to sand for stone. It is less hydroscopic then traditional mortar. Nothing I have built in this fashion has had any issues apart from normal weathering.

elementary level masonry,tight joints but needs wall ties with concrete block for a stone venear.mortared masonry done right has its place as does drystacking.You u.k. guys are right standards are higher over there as a whole but the real guys over here aren't giving away our techniques on you tube

@eregular21 the steel is a code rule/2 min #4 bars min - floating in a concrete footing. I feel your better off going alittle thicker w /footing and leave out steel 6-10inches thick depending on height/width of wall, 4inches wider than base of stone wall on each face 3 ft wide wall 48 inch footing 6 inches thick,

Hi, I am interested can this be a foundation for a light small house? I mean is it strong enough?
@tireballastserviceofflorid7771
@tireballastserviceofflorid7771 8 жыл бұрын
+Gulnaz Taiyp kyzy Not really. If there is no seismic activity it will last a while. BUT it must have a footing under it to support the weight of the rock plus the load. If done on dirt it would rumble. Block is much better than rock for a foundation.

@bonerears it depends on what time period you're talking about. Also the geographic location of the people who were building. THe Egyptians built not just fortresses but the pyramids we still see today with sand, mud and straw along with water, others used stone, cement was invented by the romans a VERY long time ago, some fortresses were made of wood, some even used dung (poop) as part of their mix. Also loose dirt and stone like the scots.

@bonerears "The use of lime,sand to create mortor was the precurser to today's cement. Cement/ with course aggregates makes concrete... Mortor needs lime to create elastisity and bonding of sand and cement to help w/ trowling and stickiness, for adhesion. The Masons of time imortal used what ever they could mix with water, that when set up it bonded and stayed inert, it was important to keep water from intruding into whatever was constructed." Sorry, this is NOT a rock wall. That is a block wall with a stone veneer. Face bedded stone has nothing to do with Stone masonry.

Fieldstone is considered a "soft stone." Portland cement is a hard mortar versus lime mortar which is a soft mortar. The wall can pass moisture easier with lime mortar and when the wall "moves" the rocks wont be damaged.

How much time it took you guys to build lets say a ... meter long wall using such tools and materials? I am getting ready with my wall with round stones only. I am bit worried that lower set stones will get loose and slip out from the structure and the whole wall will collapse. Should mention my goal is to raise the wall about 1.5m high. Maybe reinforcement will help? Shuttering?
