All opinion aside, great work. The castle surely was originally built over several years. There are obvious start/stops from previous artisans, And the boys here, did a fine job while leaving there own personality. If cost is no object, one can pick apart ANYONE'S work. But in reality, if one shows proper adherence to quality work, one then can look at this video as a look a fine craftsman doing there art. Fine job.

I’ve read the comments. .. I think it’s a great job but I agree with the lime morta comments. The benefit of the lime mortar is that it is also sacrificial i.e. it is weaker than the stone and therefore any moisture that enters the joints affectively Lee Child time is the motor which can easily be replaced rather resulting in cracking stones which ultimately could result in the failure of the wall i’m not a builder but I’ve used both cement and lime water and working with lime all day it’s just as easy as long as the weather is not turning too cold so I’m surprised they didn’t use lime based mortar.

There's a genius to using natural, rough stone. It's probably more fun than just laying bricks, which I'm sure both these guys have done plenty of. My main experience with masonry/concrete has been dealing with sagging structures, where the footings are poor underneath something really heavy. Generally that meant taking a jackhammer to the durn thing and starting over.

Matches well save for the adjoining wall where there is a definite deliniation (9:51) between old and new. It would have been best to take out some of the older stones in order to feather the joint and not have one continuous line joint.

That castle was built with lime mortar so why are the using portland cement. And it may look ok to the average KZbinr but their work is not all that good for a historic building. For example at 7.0 they have laid rock on rock and not crossed the bond.
@manuelchelo24074 жыл бұрын
The wall is going nowhere buddy. Not every single stone has to cross bond. You are trying to take away from the decent job they did there tbh. It was a good job done.
@willyspinney19594 жыл бұрын
@@manuelchelo2407 I agree that the wall is not going anywhere, but that is not the point. The castle was originally built with lime mortar and it is not authentic to use portland cement even although new structure is isolated from the original historical work.

You have to have Portland to make mortar ...... So what are you talking about lime mortar, there is no such thing as lime mortar, you get mortar when you bond those two compounds together.
@willyspinney19592 жыл бұрын
@@tysonberry4552 "there is no such thing as lime mortar" There was no such thing as Portland Cement until in was developed in England in 1824 by Joseph Aspdin. Before that there was only lime mortar which had been used for hundreds of years. With the introduction of Portland cement during the early 19th century, the use of lime mortar in new constructions gradually declined. This was largely due to the ease of use of Portland cement, its quick setting, and high compressive strength. However, the soft and porous properties of lime mortar provide certain advantages when working with softer building materials such as natural stone and terracotta. For this reason, while Portland cement continues to be commonly used in new constructions of brick and concrete construction, in the repair and restoration of brick and stone-built structures originally built using lime mortar, the use of Portland cement is not recommended. The restoration of historic buildings needs to be done using authentic materials and my point was that these guys don't know anything about the history and the need to use original materials. But please don't take my word about that and google Portland cement and also lime mortar.
@davidjames21454 жыл бұрын
"The experienced stone masons use premix mortar..." So, not lime mortar then in keeping with the original structure? This is why in the UK we have listed buildings and restoration controls, to prevent cowboy building.
@tinyvoodoo8884 жыл бұрын
I agree. There should be some real Germans doing this properly using old methods.
@markelafrantzi46683 жыл бұрын
@@tinyvoodoo888 you think that Germans are better masons than Greeks? Lol.. Greece has the most stone houses in the world as we have a LOT of it and its cheap. Well, cheaper than everywhere else that is. Thats why we have many and experienced stone masons, Germans come here to learn. Now, the reason they use concrete, surely its because they have been asked to. Mason doesnt care if its concrete, or lime, or glue, or nothing. Its what the client wants.
@mattwitz75543 жыл бұрын
How do you find a mason who can do this kind of work? Or is this pretty standard? Coming from someone with no experience.
@davidjames21453 жыл бұрын
@@markelafrantzi4668 Except...a good mason will advise their client. So here in the UK for example a good mason should advise to use lime mortar with soft red brick or limestone rather than cement. If the client insists on cement (because of ignorance) the mason should walk away.
@davidjames21453 жыл бұрын
@@mattwitz7554 It depends what you mean by "this kind of work". If you mean throwing a wall up with OPC (cement) then anyone you stop at random on the street will do. If you want lime mortar and a correctly-built wall then you need to find someone who can demonstrate their knowledge and experience. In my experience be careful what people say; look at what they've _done_ .

Too bad there was no discussion on mortar used. Many historic building in Europe require "lime only" mortar or lime putty. I am not sure what amount of cement can be mixed into the lime... if any, on the old castles. A mixture of sand, clay, and lime is also possible, in order to not use cement. For "your backyard," definitely use cement (not concrete) but use enough other materials too like lime, so it's flexible and not too rigid for freeze and thaw.

Cement mortar instead of lime will be one of the biggest issues. Lime is permeable, so it allows moisture to come and go the same way the natural stones will. Using cement mortar is going to trap moisture around the stone and cause serious structural issues sooner rather than later, allowing the moisture to cause decay in the stone. Unfortunately it seems no-one bothered to do their research before the project went ahead.
