Brignole is right. I started doing his cable exercises for delts and chest about 4 months ago. I do very few sets as the delt is a small muscle and so many other things you do kind of hit. But if you do brief HARD sets of cables as Brignole is talking about, your delt muscles will never be so sore. They grown, believe me. Brignole is RIGHT!!

Saying things like science has proven that volume is what causes muscle growth and the pullover is not a good exercise for that lat muscles is so stupid it immediately discredits the guy to me has he ever heard of Dorian Yates? Mike Mentzer or Casey Viator? How about Arthur Jones? Arthur Jones was a legitimate genius and this guy acts like he knows more than he did..... read Arthur Jones man the nautilus bulletins were brilliant the greatest writing on training ever written. If someone gets results from whatever this guy puts out there I’m happy for them but it pisses me off when people spread lies and I’ve heard a lot of them come out of his mouth

Nice description of why external rotator cuff is straining during a press movement. I think rear delt cable crossovers are a great exercise to put a balance to shoulder development. I like Dougs speaking based on actual factual physics.

Listening to Doug and reading his book has changed everything for me. I have read through it multiple times and still reference it prior to training a particular body part when I can't remember exactly what to do and/or why I'm doing it. Simply put...buy Doug's book!

Doug is definitely my favourite and he has saved my shoulders from OHP's. my shoulders were achey and my right one sounded like a ratchet. Slowly getting better!

I purchased Doug's book a few months ago and it is brilliant!! I was so impressed that I sent him a second payment of $50 and can honestly saw that I still feel like it was a steal! I am a 60 years old man and it has totally changed my training and made it much more productive and some nagging injuries I was having to train around due to poor exercise selection, have completely healed. It is very well written and after the 9th or 10th time reading it I still find it to be the absolute best investment I have ever made in my fitness journey! It explains the function of every single physique muscle and offers the best exercise for each! A total game changer! BUY THIS BOOK! You will not be disappointed regardless of your age or level of experience! Thanks Doug and Ric! Keep up the great work!

The original neckzilla was '83 America/Universe winner JEFF KING. Tip: When training neck, do not hyperextend. Only go from midpoint forward. Keep up the great videos Ric. Doug is a wealth of knowledge.

@R Z He could never replace Ric, as you see he hasn’t and no one will, but he has a lot of information he knows what he’s talking about he may be narcissistic but Ric liked him so he mustn’t be that bad, God I miss Ric he was the one the only. Imagine he was Arnold’s first training partner and Arnold would not go on the show when I was getting paid Arnold is a real arrogant narcissist.

@R Z Ric would often not agree with him Ric was no yes man many times he would say you may think that exercise is wrong but I feel it and I’m gonna keep on doing it.But biomechanics is a fact in many exercises just like him saying press behind neck is the worst exercise ever which he was right and if you’ve been training many years you know it’s true I’m old-school training 60 years oldDid in my whole life stop doing them years ago and my shoulders are getting a little better like Ric would say he would ask people in the gym or your Shoulders sore and most people would say yes how did Presse behind neck wish I never did that exercise,But everybody was doing them back in the 70s when I started training. When you’re your own person you listen and you take away what’s good and what you don’t like you don’t listen.

Got Doug Brignole's book. Worth its weight in gold. I'm not an aspiring bodybuilder or athlete, just want to look good naked without injuries. Btw look at Doug, he competed at 57 and won awards, many of the strength coaches who recommend strength exercises look like bloated road kill. Rippetoe being the main example. Buy the book, use it, reap rewards. Don't follow the masses, be open minded and realize this guy knows his shit.

I am 39 and I was breaking down, naturally I found myself doing Doug’s techniques. I recently found his videos and it reaffirms to me most exercises people love, do serious damage overtime to cartilage and ligaments. No pressing overhead, or dead lifts, or squats. The techniques work so well others will follow when they see the results. I am buying his book for sure.

I remember Serge Nubret saying that lateral raises are a trap exercise unless you go above perpendicular and take the weight completely overheard. He also did a lot of lying side laterals.

Love both these guys. Although they differ in training philosophies at times, they are both so knowledgeable and informative. Thank you Ric for having Doug on your show so often. I'm former athlete, now in mid-40s and thanks to his generous advice am able to lift intensely once again. Rather than sore joints and injuries I get incredible pumps and maybe sore actual muscles. I have begun training w my 16 yr old son using Doug's book on day one. Whereas my friends and I in the late 1980s were doing tons of weighted dips and 135 lb behind the neck presses...Ouch!

Good advice! I noticed when i first started working out and started doing standing side laterals my traps actually seemed to grow. also look at dana linn bailey and she does side laterals with dumbells like crazy and has crazy traps. gonna start incorporating the cables for delts now

couldn't agree more ! changed my approach to working out. I use your high reps to low reps and have gained size and strength. can press 110 lbs dumbbells for a set of 5. @ 57 yrs old.

I enjoy when Doug Brignole is on the show. He make good logical sense. As an masters competitor I am finding as most guys who have trained for years it's more about form and doing things correct and safe now. I had the opportunity to train a few times years ago at Doug's gym. He was and still is a great Ambassador for the sport. Coming myself from a father who competed and holding many top titles during the Golden Age of bodybuilding its great that there is a site and show that brings the past into the present. THANKS Ric for what you do to share all the great years and support the sport of bodybuilding.

Mark Rippetoe teaches a lot of these biomechanics in his books. Levers, neutral levers, moment arms, etc...

delt's for me don't need that much time or exercises... seems the harder i hit them ends up making joints hurt and delts shrink...there's a sweet spot on training that produces best results for everyone...you just have to find it.

Fighter pilots have some of the biggest necks I've seen. I come from an Air Force family, most of my male relatives were fighter pilots. I've seen fist hand how large their necks would grow from all the G- forces. Unfortunately I severely broke my back shortly before joining, and wasn't able to serve.

Many years ago, Bob Gajda invented a machine that I now believe might be to serve the purpose Doug is talking about, resistance perpendicular to the working limb at a variety of movements. It was a commercial failure, and is nowhere to be found these days. Anyone heard of this?

So much confusion comes from people thinking that just because someone got good shape, their routine/approach is correct for them. There are guys in shape that don't know how to train, and guys that train perfectly but don't progress nearly as far.

Thanks Ric! Doug I do have a question. I think in a video you said that stretching between sets wouldn't change the outcome but what about Ben Pakulski's 'CEP' which is basically stretching the trained muscle by contracting the opposite muscle. I've never tried it but I do wonder if it actually is beneficial.

Hi, interesting talk. So if you perform side delts on the cable machine, the resistance curve should become a constant due to the nature of the pulley. Do you suggest adding more weight, but not going up all the way in order to grow the side delts via cable laterals? Also, what difference does it make if the attachment is set at the bottom or right where your hand falls, since the cable provides constant tension and is usually on a swivel? Cheers! Mr. Wizard: I don't know exactly how to answer this (and I know you weren't asking me) but I'll try. If you set the pulley at wrist height, when you initiate the movement, the resistance is at its absolute greatest because the lever (your arm) is perpendicular to resistance. As you raise your arm, the resistance naturally decreases as you begin to move your arm more toward being parallel to resistance. In this case, with a pulley, resistance never becomes "0", but it does decrease as you raise your arm.

Because the book still needs to be editing, new photos, new illustrations (to not violate copyrights), indexing and cover design. That all will cost about $15K, which I don't have. It's easier to let a publisher cover that cost, plus allow me access to all his markets (i.e., trainer market, university exercise science professors, med schools, etc.)

excellent video love the book Doug. I realize you're still at training is very scientific Arthur Jones and Vince gironda advocated pulleys and angle of work the muscle. when it comes to the neck scientific peer review studies of Sean all you have to do is front and back. what word doesn't understand is that doing the neck exercise on a machine would be safer not yet you can't do it with a harness. but if you want to have time under load and keep increasing the weight you have to have some kind of stable platform. old school strongman and wrestlers used to do neck Bridges. the only problem with this is that if you don't have a basic strength of ready you can severely hurt your neck vertebrae.

For a lot of exercises Doug recommends, you really need to have a Freemotion machine for adjustable cable height. Not all gyms have them, and hardly anyone has one when training at home
