Bandai 1/5000 Star Destroyer kit: amzn.to/2DcdTbJ
Kayte and Norm wrap up their build of the awesome Bandai 1/5000 scale Star Destroyer, assembling the kit with its LED internal lighting system. The last step is to add a weathering pass, and we experiment with using powdered pigments instead of a wash to accentuate the model's panel lines and make it look like the original filming miniature.
NOTE: This was filmed in 2019, well before the stay-at-home and mandatory mask orders.

Wow, this looks amazing! I’ve been building RG Gundams recently and I have to say, the genius that Bandai has put behind the skeletoral structure just blows your mind, especially for something at a 1:144 scale. That company thinks of everything.

My first impressions of the model was mostly negative in terms of the cost. I thought "wow, that's kinda expensive, especially for the size", but after watching these videos and getting a closer look at the detail, I've changed my mind. For that price, it is a really good deal... so much thought went into this model by Bandai. They continue to impress me. Thanks for sharing Tested!

Not sure this matters, but there is space weathering. Look at Ceres or Europa. They should be ice-white, but are not because both intra-steller dust and reaction products from radiation. Also, there is always more shadow on a real ship than a model because of scale.

This model has breathtaking detail and is super accurate to the filming model. That said if you build this model straight off the instructions, if you are obsessed with details as I am, you will notice the side walls curve upward so if viewed straight on, it will have a 'smile', or curved bow. This should be straight and has annoyed quite a few model builders on the prop forums. My fix was to significantly modify the interior and they are pretty straight on my build. Also whoever designed the way too turn the lights on/off - surely there could've been an easier way. Ideally external power supply with power maybe coming off the garage chute.

Spacecraft are subject to a great deal of weathering. Space is full of debris and dust hurtling around (or being hurtled through) at great velocity. Entering and exiting planetary orbits, unless the craft is actively generating a shield the debris will scuff the plating.

Silly question here, do you want to seal it with something so that dust and ordinary moisture won't affect the model?
@valosonthor
@valosonthor 4 жыл бұрын
You can use a top coat to seal any paint or weathering you do. It's not strictly necessary since the plastic of model won't be affected by moisture, and well dust is a factor, seal or not. That said, a choice of using a glossy or matte top coat can have significant impacts on how the underlying paint looks, for both good and bad. There's a lot of good videos about using a top coat as part of your painting process.

Did you have any issues with light leakage where the superstructure attaches to the main body?
@alanco608
@alanco608 4 жыл бұрын
The superstructure snaps into position but one tends to want to be gentle when pressing it into position....The plastic is tougher than it looks so a little more final pressure can make a difference and once you have it in place there aren't any leaks.
@alanco608
@alanco608 4 жыл бұрын
Bear in mind that underneath the superstructure is where the batteries are stored so it is designed to 'snap out' easily when changing batteries. If you have a model without the lighting kit then a gentle push from back to front followed by both sides should put it firmly in place.

@Bad_Wolf_Media
@Bad_Wolf_Media 4 жыл бұрын
The answer is very easy: For good world-building, the designers of the film know the scale of these craft, fictional or not. They have to be consistent with that so that they can build accurate shooting models not only for - in this case - the Star Destroyer, but also for other craft that are going to appear next to them. It's called "attention to detail" and it's what made the ILM model shop the gold standard.
