Great timing. I just tried out the X68000 core for the first time this morning with the MT32 and Castlevania. It's pretty sweet!

My bf has a MiSTer, and he helped set up for me an x68000 game that I really wanted to play, called Slimyer. Slimyer is a very fun and challenging puzzle game! You play the game using the mouse. The music in Slimyer is absolutely amazing. The story and art in this game is really great too. ❤

There's a reason why so many of the Capcom arcade ports on the X68000 are excellent - Capcom used the X68000 as development hardware for their CPS1 titles, meaning that they were first tested and designed for the X68000 before being ported down to the CPS1 architecture.

There's actually a lot of games that don't work. Salamander immediately comes to mind. Backgrounds scroll but no ships or projectiles. Cy-lips which is a great shooter has the intro working fine but as soon as you get into the game, it crashes. Rygar doesn't work.The voice samples in Strider are pitched way down. The latest update fixes the sample drop out in Final Fight though. The core still needs a lot of work. XM6 is still the best way to play the X68000 but I'm still hoping the core will be fixed to where the whole library works as it should but there is some fun to be had if you like the popular titles.

Alongside the X68000, I’m hoping the Sharp X1 gets some much needed attention through getting a MiSTer core. When it came to 80s PC ports the X1 often had the best versions; for example, Super Mario Bros Special has Zelda-esque screen transitions on the X1, whereas the PC-88 version just uses a black screen.

I’m curious to know does the recreated keyboard light up on the mini X68000 with the Cotton theme music? I have witnessed this with a real setup at RMC gaming museum and what a thrill it was to see it! Fave/last game to play would be Nemesis ‘90 Kai a I loved MSX Nemesis 2 and this is a great update of that game.

"it's also why a number of Western games on the SMD sound the same, they were all using variations of the same samples from GENS" just wanted to mention that the correct term would be "patches" not "samples". Since Genesis sound is FM based, they are using the stock preset patches rather than programming their own. It's an important distinction since the SNES for example is sample based vs the Genesis which has much less sampling capabilities. I am just bothering to comment on this small detail since you are such a hardcore fan of video game audio and sound technology (I read most of the essays you comment on many of VGE's videos).
@Wobble200715 сағат бұрын
@@QbertKraft Good point cheers, sequenced samples (patches) was not the SMD's strong point (basic sample playback on one channel via the PSG + the 6th channel on the FM, but then the SMD also used the Z80 for sound samples once Sega figured it out, and even the main 68K CPU if desired), plenty of games had them, some used all three of its sound output methods (PSG/FM/patches), not that rarely either, the SMD has to be my favourite sounding machine, Golden Axe is like silk to my ears, I love the Neo Geo Pocket Colours sound too (Analogue Pocket really has it dialled in).
