Man... I would LOVE one if these. Not going to happen in this lifetime... I live in a rapidly deteriorating Mobil home already & I can’t afford to replace it, let alone try getting a bunker. But it’s fun to dream and see someone doing it. It’s pretty awesome. I’m amazed at all the small, IMPORTANT things that you don’t skip over or go cheap on. I am obsessed with the little details that are so important but are often not paid attention to by most people. Im impressed! 👍🏼

I'm just thinking, oh no, another hole to the outside world and all you have is a little silicon protection!!! Most of it is being smushed out as it's tightening. I'd at least have the stuff on both sides. I hope there is something covering over the top of all those bolts and the whole thing in general. Once it's in the ground, leaking issues are a little hard to fix. A little tiny drip from just one hole, there goes all your supplies under the floor digging destroyed first.

I'm very impressed with Atlas shelters. Thanks for the videos Ron! You get so many comments asking why things are not done differently, but obviously, most non-trades or non-engineering folks don't understand how much their 'upgrades' would impact cost. Sure...you could have all joist hangers welded on, use nothing but Trex joists, double coat he exterior with two coats of Line-X, use all stainless screws, carbon fiber panels in place of plywood, have each worker wearing the very best protective gear and using 100% OSHA approved work methods, encase the shelter in 2 feet of reinforced concrete, add 1 or 2 more escape hatches, and so on. Then you'd have a shelter that cost from $200K all the way up to the cost of a nuclear submarine!

Ron , as person hates enclosed areas , I buy this! Idea #1 ( save $$) I watching your guys" Bust Butts" ( I am sure in heat summer) getting the wood bolted in . Picture this with the ends off , build the entire ( 15 foot sections all out steel lower frame.)wood floor top.... out side shelter in open space . Then super long forks ( rollers on removable wood planks ) push the entire floor assembly into unit .No drilling , no holes in walls.More important lot faster ( less labor cost ) . second idea I know you love under floor storage...set that aside . Just install shelter , then cement in floor 2 " floor , ( radiant tubes heat/ cooling?.) full up, bottom, big boy, low cost sand to get the floor needed, wanted, height. I would then install over head storage ( like in airplane) .Moma has lot less upper body strength easier than pulling up floor , she rather have "Kitchen cabinets , lot more home....ie kitchen look.( lot more $ for you selling women full kitchen .Double value shelter, just like in home , most value ( bang buck) in shelter. also this way sold floor( Heavy) , keep entire shelter from erupting out ground if water table should unexpectedly rise. Put the shelter on cement pad @Location Then .put out side fill against shelter , not compress it , cement in floor , that massive weight cement push compact out side fill. them compact out side fill one sold mass ....strength unreal shelter never move. Just few Ideas big boy....With Idea 2 allow customer get feel adjustable height.floor vs head room.

It would really cool to have a video where someone actually "tests" their shelter by spending a week, or even a few days inside. Heck, you could have one setup at your location where you "rent" it out for a week and the "family" stays inside it for a week so they get an idea of what it would be like to spend all that time underground and how everything works (or what doesn't work and needs adjustments). Buyers could think of it like "training". I seen the "30 day challenge" but no follow up. That's what I'm talking about.

Never penetrate the bunker with screw holes. Like you said, everything should be welded water tight. The bunker should be able to float if necessary. You should have welded brackets inside of the shelter to hold up the floor. Also the outside of the galvanized pipe should have a heavy rubber based paint product to keep all moisture off of it. Then I would add a 1" Styrofoam product to protect the rubber based paint. The Styrofoam protects the rubber based paint from being punctured by the backfill gravel. Then the shelter should be backfilled with gravel. This is standard building practice to water proof a concrete wall that can have standing water behind it. Yes, it does add a little more cost but then the exterior of the shelter would last and be water tight for many more years. All pumps in the bunker should have manual backup in case of electrical failure. All pipes that exit the shelter and rise above the surface should be protected from damage and from ultraviolet light. Use black PVC pipe or black paint the white PVC pipe on the surface. I would add a concrete pad and a metal housing to cover all exterior pipes. An ideal solution would place a metal building over the bunker to conceal the entrance and external pipes. If anyone found the bunker they would ransack the building and overlook the underground bunker. The functionality of the bunker requires electricity at all times. Powering the bunker with a generator that needs gas or diesel puts a very short lifetime on the usefulness of the bunker. When the gas/diesel tanks for the generator are dry and no gas/diesel available for a refill, the bunker is dead. I would use a solar array and/or a wind turbine to guarantee a source of electricity. Also water resupply is a critical necessary. I would add a rain catchment system above the shelter with some kind of water purifier. This bunker could easily contain enough food to last up to five years for the people it houses. The rest of the bunker needs to be able to do the same thing. Don't forget about the EMP threat too. If your electricity goes out, then the bunker is dead. The septic and gas/diesel tanks should not be near the bunker. Cooking orders need to be suppressed also. No bunker is impenetrable to a sustained attack. What is your mission statement to your bunker design? The problem that I see here is that the bunker should not be near a city that might get nuked. That means at least a 100 mile distance or more from a major city to avoid the bomb blast. If you are in the city working, the chance of you getting out of the city on a surprise attack would be slim to none. Your bunker would then be worthless to your survival. I am waiting for your Stage 2 video.

With the added diameter you get that increased headroom - which if you need it is great. For those of us more "down to Earth" (short) I would think you could almost split it into a two floor. You wouldn't want a complete split, as neither side would be enough, but with a loss of a foot or so of extra headroom you would easily have the room for a very reasonable subfloor bedroom (spacious by boating standards). Obviously, you are not hurting for space in that behemoth, but it might open up options for that diameter pipe in shorter setups. In fact, it almost begs the question on why not get high diameter (15') pipe and plan it as an internal 2 story. It would reduce the digging footprint for the square footage gained (with the underfloor being a narrow central path to flank with beds, seating, shelves, etc).

Some Recommendations: 1. For the flooring: Paint (both sides) before you install. This will help protect the plywood if there is a moisture problem or water leak. Also paint all of the floor joist installed too. Also consider using a flooring glue to bond the plywood to the floor joist to avoid the squeaks. 2. Before painting Steel, use Prep-n-Etch (Sold at Home Depot). This will remove any dirt or oil on the metal as well as condition the metal so the paint can bond well. 3. Not a good idea to Weld (even tack welding) without face protection. At least a pair of safely glasses.

In the middle ages Castle Keeps often were lost when the wood supporting the separate floors and floors caught fire. The Keep was then a giant chimney, the occupants... cinders. I siliconed the rivets on my boat...overtime they leaked and needed redoing. How might that done on a buried shelter? Is there redundancy in multiple sump pumps? Do you think those dogged hatches might twist torque malform and malfunction as they do on ships underfire? Nice shelter. Best
