The quad core trashcan Mac Pro from 2013 is not good. It's overpriced and underpowered, there are a dozen Macs you can buy that offer better performance and value. But today w'ere going to try a new perspective. I already bought the cheapest trash can 2013 Mac Pro on eBay, but today we're going to use it to build the cheapest 12 core Mac Pro! The Intel Xeon E5-2697 V2 is a much more capable process and it may just save the trashcan from complete obscurity. In this video I'll go through the upgrade process for upgrading the CPU in a 2013 Mac Pro.

I actually think the design and inside look so good and luxurious. Apple might released this design as Mac non-pro with mainstream Intel cpu and a single amd gpu. So, it would be between Mac Mini and Mac Pro.

I was hoping they would make a new mid-grade affordable based on something similar to this design. A lot of us already have monitors and keyboards and just want a partially upgradable (ram, ssd) mac that we can get at an affordable price. Mac Pro Mini? Mac Mini Pro?

it's not a big deal for someone with basic HW skills. It seems today childer do not disamble stuff, like we use to do. It could be that everithing is glued, so your set of basic tools your grampa buy for you wont work (is toxic mascullinity buying a toolset for boys? I know is ok to but tools for girls). The only issue is the thermals and the non standard GPU form factor, so one can't get new GPUs for it. I knew it will fail because of the thermals.

Thanks for not crapping on my trashcan for once! I am about to upgrade my 6-core to 12, and since I live in Asia I can just pay a shop to do the installation $20. Can you please show the benefits of using various eGPUs with various cards to see what would be a cost effective upgrade in that area? Us previous owners of trashcans would thoroughly appreciate it! I also would like for you to demonstrate the various SSD upgrade options. What I love also is that I have 64GB ram and I can run several virtualizations currently without any performance hit. I find it faster to run windows in emulation on my trashcan than actually using my various windows devices. And I always love how quiet it is!

Your results surprised me a little bit. I was interested in these for a long time and still marvel over them. Also I am being surprised more and more by architecture changes. I didn’t realize the improvements Intel/AMD make underneath. If all we focus on is Geekbench, Cinebench, gaming, etc... then newer PCs aren’t as attractive. The main downside is the age and graphics - the age is not a specification / the graphics? unless you are a gamer or editing video the graphics are more than adequate, I produce music and it runs Logic superbly and the thing you call the 'Trashcan' (a very negative term) has is great connectivity, the 6 thunderbolt ports across 3 separate buses and an HDMI and digital and analog audio I/O and 4 USB ports, it's expensive to buy now (so it has retained it's value) but I already have mine (with the D700 cards, 6 core and I may upgrade it to 12 core) so the current price is not an issue, it runs cool, does not over heat and is rock solid with Logic. People buy computers to use them in the real world, not to just run benchmark tests. One other thing, the reason I chose a 6 core is because the processor is faster (3.5) than the 12 core (2.8) so are the extra 6 processors worth slowing down the computer for . . . . I suppose it depends if you need throughput of faster processing or rendering power which a slower computer is OK for . . .

So I had been using a MacBook Pro Retina 15" late 2013 model for about 6 years, until I needed to replace the battery just the the other day. I always said the once I needed to do that, I would upgrade to a 2013 Mac Pro and give my MacBook to my daughter. The reason that I wanted the 2013 Mac Pro is that I don't need a laptop and my home office set up includes two 30" Apple Cinenma Displays and a rotated 23" Apple Cinema display that is virtical between the two 30", all three us Thunderbolt. I absolutely love my monitors, and this is why I needed the Mac Pro. In order to run these monitors without further investment in adapters/cables etc., I need Thunderbolt 2. It has been a major upgrade for me to have six Thunderbot 2 ports as I have the three monitors and a Thunderbolt Focsrite Clarrete interface for music recording. Now I have everything connected at once, which is just awesome for me. In addition, I purchased the base Quad Core model for $1100 and just installed the 12 Core referred to in this video for $170. So for $1270 out the door, I have the 12 core model with 48 gigs of ram. So I think it does come down to your set up and particular needs. For me and my love affair with vintage Apple Cinema displays and my Thunderbolt display, this computer is a dream both from a cost standpoint as well as the fact that it is blazing fast for me compared to what I was using before. Plenty fast! Anyway, just a quick story there. Loved this video as it helped me to go down the road of upgrading the processor which was not too difficult and well worth it in the end.

I recently bought one of these too and it was still sealed in the box from Apple. It's also the 4 core model, but it's really not that bad of a CPU. The single thread performance is much better than the 12 core you installed. Mine scored 863 for single core on Geekbench 5. The 12 core CPU is only best for applications that can utilize multiple cores. I think the 8 and 10 core CPUs offer a better balance of performance. I plan to go with the 8 core E5-1680 v2. Some people choose the E5-2667 v2, but the thermal requirements for that CPU aren't a good match for the Mac Pro. The 10 core E5-2690 v2 would also be a good choice. It has better single core performance than the 12 core and almost as good multi core performance. Also, I suggest wearing an anti-static bracelet when working on the computer. It would also be best to use the specialized tools from Apple and follow their instructions made for technicians or have an authorized Apple service provider perform the CPU installation.

So I noticed some quirks on the Mac Pro 2013. If it has a background task running, say Plex media server. It goes to sleep, but when it does this the fan doesn’t work. So I come back in the room a couple of hours later and notice that it’s getting quite hot. I also see an amber light coming out of the base. As soon as I wake it up, the fan kicks in and he temps drop from 80+ to 40ish. This explains why some mornings I notice that it’s completely turned off. I have istat pro running and I can see the temperature Curves constantly increasing and the fan being zero. I basically have it so it doesn’t sleep anymore and have appropriate fan curves.

The thing that gets overlooked on a lot of machines like this one and the others you mentioned toward the end of the video, 2018 i7 Mac mini etc, that seem to not have an apparent user or purpose, is that these are EXCELLENT audio machines for music producers, mix engineers etc. We're always going to add a 3rd party audio interface/sound card anyway, so processor speed and RAM are most important. I personally chose the Mac mini for this. Found a good deal on the base i7 model for $999 brand new, did the RAM upgrade to 64GB, and bought a T7 for storage. $1400 later and I have an audio screamer!

Am I the only one who likes the design? It’s nice they thought on doing something different other than the shitty rectangular and boring computers other companies were making, and the fact how powerful it is (considering how small it is), makes it even better.

You could pull the PCI-e extender out and run a external graphics card from the PCI-e bus.

if you connect with an eGPU(external GPU) case with display card like Radeon 5700 XT chips, your 2013-Mac pro will perform much much better (triple times) then just change the CPU.

Oh, and the 128G RAM option is only an option if you accept the RAM running at 1066MHz. My machine has the D700's which are still not up to much compared to even the last gen AMD/NVIDIA. I bought it for the TB2 ports as I have several last gen OWC thunderbays. One thing I hate about my machine is that the IO connections are super sensitive - I could literally just breathe on the cables at the back and drives would disconnect. It's been back to Apple for a check up and IO board replacement but it's still the same.

I know you probably know this, but the Mac 5,1 runs cooler, is nipping at the heels of the trash can on CPU (2x3.46ghz) and kills it on GPU with an RX580. Add in that it can be had cheaper and is much easier to upgrade, and the trashcan really doesn't make sense as a used Mac purchase.

T A I am editing RAW video on mine, running Logic, and learning compositing, so my upgrades made sense. And my guilty pleasure is playing Fortnite. I can run mostly high settings, but not epic. Maybe running 48Gb Ram instead of 64 would improve things.....

I was able to score a 4 core/16gb/1tb/D300 machine that had some cosmetic issues on the case with a 1 year warranty add-on for around $800. Once I unload my cMP 5,1 I think it'll be pretty cheap. I just didn't want to fiddle with hacking on the 5,1 and I don't do pro level work so the GPU isn't as important to me. Can always eGPU that issue.

This is a pretty nice upgrade from a fw8 quad i7 mini. I still thing a modern mac should adopt a trashcan or cube shape to have one cpu and one gpu to be better than a mini but cheaper than a mac pro. and then you will have a ... MAC.

So 1 year later this is still relevant because hey we don't ball like that yet. I priced my Mac Pro 7,1 at $16.5K with the future-proof bells. This is not that. This is a decent choice over M1 Mac Mini + eGPU ~$3800. And even if you go this route you are still $1200 less than the M1 Mac Mini route. Sorry, but these are the specs I have looked determinedly to get away from IO read-write hell on the PC. Mac Pro should cost no more than $2000. Mine is coming in at $1200, with a $250 upgrade for CPU, 64GB RAM D300 (might change this later), and an eGPU. So less than $2400 with peripherals, you have a decent machine for the next several years. And that should edit 1080 footage for years to come. With that $1200 saved I can even get a Mac Book. Personally, I liked the design and always did. Now that most of my software is Cloud/Subscription-based, it is finally economically viable to switch. The only things that concern me are switching External HDDs to Mac and Fonts.

If you already have a trashcan MacPro, upgrading the CPU makes a lot of sense. At least you can get another 2 years out of it.

Bought mine in 2013- 4 core. Did the 12 core upgrade 6 months ago, added RX-590 eGPU 2 months ago. Added 1TB name last month. Still the only Mac I use. Surprised by the numbers you get... and pleased. Apple lost me on the $6K+ Mac Pro. Can't justify the expense. Apple needs to release a Pro version of the Mini.

i would say e5 2697 V2 for 170$ is quite expensive, currently e5 2678v3 which is haswell goes for around 100eur and it's 12 core 24 threads, with turbo boost mod it will stay at 3.3ghz all core even on cheapest chinese x99 :) but ofc there is no x99 in this trashcan

I know this is an old thread but this seems like a kick azz developer box for doing typical app dev. It runs the latest OS and supports Xcode and since I need a cheap 3rd Mac dev systems I might go for it. Fun little upgrade project too.

do remind that on single core-applications, those that most people use on a daily basis, a Quad-core will be faster (3,7 GHz with turbo boost up to 3,9)
