In this video we work on our 2nd helicopter amateur model build for this channel with the U.S. Army AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopter. Using the 1/48 scale Hasegawa model version as our subject, we’ll weather it up with effects of faded paint, soaking fluid leaks and dusting. Custom decals of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade will be created to add to the fuselage.

I'm pretty much an 'out of the box' sort of builder. Been at it fifty years now (gulp!), although not continuously. My painting skills have come on in leaps and bounds thanks in no small measure to channels like yours. Back in the day it was enamels, now I use acrylics and even oils.......how times change. Which reminds me, when I was a teenager the only way you could modify your model was scratch building with card or rod; if you wanted, say a different nose for a two seater version of a single seat fighter, you had to carve and sand a balsa wood plug then use talcum powder mixed with dope to get an acceptable painting surface on the wood. And do a LOT of sanding! (No wonder I am out of the box). After market accessories, photo etch and resin, are a godsend and I use them now and again. I don't think it diminishes the hobby, it just adds to it's evolution. Not really into helicopters but the Apaches operated by the British Army trundle overhead fairly regularly on their way to and from a local training ground; evil looking and sort of unnatural but very impressive. As always, thanks for a fascinating and educational build, greetings from the UK.

Great apache build! I built two 1/32 scale revel models back in the '90's and hand painted one in U.S. Army colors and the other in what if desert camo. I masked the canopy with clear plastic tape. Used Testors model master paints. Had a blast building them!

@@MaxAfterburner it wasn't easy. I used bottle and half of dark olive green! A half a tube of testors cement (orange, the good stuff) and alot patience. The models were as remember not hard to build but were heavy so i had to superglue a small strut to the main gear. They even had AIM-9's on wingtip rails!

I know this video is two years old, BUT something I'd recommend for helo blades, once the blades and rotor hub are glued, once dry, place that assembly into the middle of a dinner plate, upside down and use a blow dryer or heat gun to shape the blades to look as if gravity is pulling them down. Looks better than a pure straight blade on a model that is being displayed on the ground.

I only returned to the hobby at the start of this year, having not touched a kit since the early 2000's. Things like 3D printed decals are a positive step IMO. There's satisfaction that comes from picking out all the moulded kit detail and hand painting switches and so on, but stuff like Quinta, Red Fox and Eduard's decals are just easier, quicker and (certainly for less talented modellers like me) look better. Superb KZbin channel and content, fantastic builds - keep them coming 😁

Brilliant job all round....build, camo and commentary. Another very enjoyable watch, great tips....the weathered look of the camo is spot-on! With the after market cockpit details it's a time saver however, if the cockpit is closed and they are not visible, spending a few extra minutes painting up the kit's plastic is just fine (mind you, I have included scratch-build in some WW1 planes which aren't visible once the enclosed....but I know they're there!) That's an awesome looking Apache mate. Great info and techniques on display as well. As for the new cockpit detailing sets, I find them to be a godsend as my vision isn't as sharp as it once was, not to mention my hand-eye coordination. But I'd only splash out on interiors that are highly visible or if displaying the canopy opened etc. Smaller cockpits like early Russian jets are best left painted as it's not worth the expense to upgrade. But to each there own I guess. BTW Great to see you back.

To your question about after market cockpit details. I have used photo etched parts from Eduard as I did in my AH-64D. I have some 3D decals from Red Fox for future builds. The details are amazing, and I couldn’t get that much detail on my own. It does take away from the process, but saves time and results are great.

Glad you're back. On cockpit details I think photo etch is over rated. Most modern kits have outstanding detail and it's satisfying to make a good cockpit OOB. The only thing I like are photo etch seatbelts, especially for Tamiya kits instead of their cartoon decals for seatbelts. The game changer will be these new 3D detail sets, they look outstanding.

At round 5:00, you discuss the new full-colour cockpit instrument panels available from Eduard and Kinta Studio simplifying assembly, and raising the issue of the better modellers just using their skills; you ask our input. First, of course, would be free choice depending upon the builder's preference. Some may like them. Others might want the flexibility of making their own decisions as to colour, etc. I am somewhere in the middle. I like illuminating a well-detailed cockpit instrument panel. I could do this with Eduard's PE sets of years past, though they lacked the little coloured lights. These new iterations, however, as gorgeous as they look, lack transparent instruments. Not even the modern digital panels, which would be ideal for just such a treatment, can glow as I would have them. This is remediable: substitute the transparent portions with clear plastic. It might be simpler to make the part clear, then add to this the detailing. Speaking of cockpits and the aftermarket, several of us prefer to build our aircraft models in-flight. This requires 1) a comparably accurate pilot/aviator, or full air crew, as appropriate, 2) closed landing gear bay doors; 3) rotating propeller(s), rotor(s), etc., for those aircraft that have it/them; 4) an unobtrusive support (not a stand that looks like a 100- metre-long telegraph pole jutting down from a graceful, metal bird).
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner Жыл бұрын
The aftermarket cockpit panels are getting more and more amazing. It may become impossible for the best in the hobbyist community to outdo them. For me, the display stands step down the realism because of their visibility to the overall look, but I understand why the "in-flight" option is desirable. 😎
@DavidRLentz

@@MaxAfterburner , thanks for your reply. In re the stand, we agree: I expressly call for "an unobtrusive support". I have an idea of how one can produce this, borrowing from the concept, process, and apparatus in motion picture production called the Chapman crane.

Great to see you back at the desk again. I particularly like your introduction, outlining tools, paints etc. On the 3D cockpit "decals", simply stunning. However, these easy add on details must be taken into account in the contest environment so as to not penalise the modeller who goes to the trouble of "hand detailing" as there are some simply stunning cockpit detailers out there.

Greeblie (Greeble?) nirvana - I have found interesting combinations can be had using your scavenging capabilities, decorative skills, and a modicum of luck plus a pile of scrap computer circuit boards and you have some hyperrealistic, not accurate but awesome looking cockpits. Little diode ridden chunks can be removed with a Dremel for tight work but for demolition I like aircraft tin snips, cuts the boards close. IC Chips when cut by side cutters leave behind the solder joints to act as switches around the IC Chip LCD or CRT monitors. Anyway pretty much everybody has a PC or old laptop lying around they'd love to give you for free or $5.00. Don't forget in the CD's, HD's And DVD's are small low power motors and on some of the DVD's there are micro stepper motors attached to the trays. Power supplies harvest small, medium and large capacitors for use as barrels and the like - but please read about discharging capacitors or you're in for a shockingly painful night - even if they've been unplugged for months .

Love your videos! Do you thin Tamiya paint when brush painting? If so, what thinner and at what ratio? Same thinning question for airbrushing Tamiya? Do you usually just use a coat of Tamiya paint as a base instead of using primer? Great job on the AH-64D Apache Longbow.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, thanks for your questions. I do not thin my paint for hand brushing and I usually keep that to a minimum. For airbrushing, I run with about a 75%/80% paint to 25%/20% thinner. I also use the Tamiya paint as the base coat instead of applying a formal primer coat. For Project #30, I retired my old compressor to the role of a back-up unit and I'll be using a new set up. This change may cause me to re-evaluate my mixing ratios and adjust my airbrushing technique.

@@MaxAfterburner Thank you for answering my questions so quickly. Follow-up questions: What is your thinner of choice and at what approx pressure do you airbrush? Also, have you ever seen the need to use a flow improver and/or dry retarder medium, and if so, which products? Really appreciate your videos and advice.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, I use the Tamiya X-20A thinner for all my Tamiya paints that need to be diluted down. I don't have a gauge on my old compressor as it is a all-or-none pressure release. My guess is that it runs around 22 psi when the trigger is fully depressed. Finally, I've never used any additives such as an improver or retarder in any of my work thus far. 😉

@@MaxAfterburner Me again with another question. Have you ever used the Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinner with Tamiya paints? Just curious since you indicated you used the Tamiya X-20A thinner. It's my understanding that the leveling thinner is a mix of thinner and a little retarder. Thanks.

Hi Bryan, I was in the process of firewalling my throttle of effort by working on 6 different videos simultaneously. However, YT hit my channel with a permanent warning in early June (they refuse explanation, leaving me to guess) -- effectively throwing a turkey buzzard down my intake and causing a compressor stall and flameout. I'm in a dead-stick condition and I have been unable to re-light my engine. I had a number of projects lined up, but I'm having a difficult time moving with some purpose forward because of their attack on this channel. I will say that my next model project is 30% completed and involves a U.S. Navy aircraft best known for its carrier-based operations. 🤞 I would look to my Rumble channel to see it released on a more timely basis.
