Building the Perfect Cart for my new Kiln

In this video you can see how I built this kiln cart from scratch. As the name says, it is built for my new Rohde kiln. I have also built in a drawer with a bucket that contains the oil for quenching. The size of the bucket on the inside is 22cm x 27cm and it's 45cm deep, the oil level will be at 41cm height. So it is 2cm bigger on all sides than the kiln opening itself which is 20cm x 25cm and 35cm deep (39cm diagonal). The kiln is made by Rohde from Germany and the model is ME20/13 (see link below). It has a digital control unit and max temperatur of 1300°C. It's 91kg heavy by the way.
Just 1cm above the oil level I installed a perforated sheet as a spill protection guard. By moving the cart around or just moving the drawer the oil will make waves and could spill over and make a mess. The perforated sheet does slow down the waves a lot and makes spilling over less likely. If it still does spill over I could also add a second perforated sheet with a distance of 1cm right above the current one. To protect the oil from dirt and dust I have also made a lid to cover up the opening. I placed the drawer on the left side of the cart to have additional space on the right side to build a little shelf for the heat treatment equipment. I have an electrical heating unit to preheat the quenching oil, an infrared thermometer to check the oil temperature, heat resistant gloves, stainless steel foil to wrap the parts to avoid scale to build up, a pair of old scissors to cut the stainless steel foil and also a pair of blacksmith tongs to hold the parts.
I brought all the parts to a local company for powder coating to have maximum protection, especially for the bucket with the oil. Regular 2K paint could not withstand the high temperatures of the oil very well. I built the shelf from wood and roller painted it with a PU acrylic paint. The shelf and the drawer are painted in light grey (RAL 7035), the frame and the door latch are painted in sky blue (RAL 5015). I picked these two colors because they are the same like the kiln, the Rohde logo is in sky blue by the way.
I hope you like my work and the video.

Great plan and execution. The good parts are the rails you made of heavy metal allowing for the stops and closed position grooves plus, they are a good sturdy set of parts to deal with the weight of the oil. Very keen idea for the screen hanger, the 3 degree slot in the knob. Also the wheels are just about right for the needs, not too small like most retail carts. Love the color combination too. Better than a factory made cart because it has durable materials, tight tolerances, is square, has quality bearings and just the right dimensions.

I truly admire the work you do. Not just the things you build and restore but the videography and editing. Great stuff. One suggestion if I may. Build a tray or bucket out of the perforated material that fits in the bottom of the vat. Make sure it has handles that come up to the fill level. If you ever drop a small part, you won't have to fish around in the vat of oil to get it out. just lift the tray out and there it is. Yes, I learned this the hard way.

As someone who’s studying mechanical engineering, I feel like this is a proper example on what engineering really is about. A cart for moving a kiln easier is all good, but using its shape and space for convenience is really making an efficient use of resources! Not just the oil drawer, but a proper shelf for all the tools you would need to use with the kiln all make your work more efficient and organized. They’re simple, but ingenious additions. I’m sure they’ll be very convenient for your future projects. Nice work!

Gruezi Mr MM. Clever design, quality work. Nicest quenching tank I've ever seen. As with machinist friends here, it is nice to see the long tradition of machinists not wishing to be overly proficient at welding. Quite correct, the bigger welding jobs get handed over to the smooth finely honed welding hands. Nothing wrong with your welding of course. After decades of steel work, in my shop at home I am wary and suspicious of the needed wood working tasks. Diabolical stuff! Same thing, not really my department. Our old blacksmith Louie in the railcar repair shop had a quench tank 1.5 meters long and a meter deep. He kept a tin lid on it all the time. Huge fun to see a new guy hurry over holding some just-below-red hot piece he had just hammered into shape. New Guy would yank the lid off, plunge his steel into the oil bath and instantly be surrounded by a wall of fire. It only burned for a second so no damage done. A few eyebrows half burned away was about the limit of the damage. The very low flash point oil wouldn't burn, that was the fumes above the oil burning off. Yes that was me one time. You learn fast to avoid that!

Nice. :) The oil couldn't have been cheap though, considering the current prices and availability... Back when I apprenticed as a fitter, the quenching oil was kept in a small 50L drum with the lid cut off standing on the floor at the kiln.

Incredible as always !! What about a metallic holder with plate beneath for the tongs when they are super hot and with oil spilling after a quench ? This will avoid to damage and spoil the wooden shelf. Best !

In my humble opinion, MyMechanics is not only an excellent restorer (probably the best on KZbin), but also a great video director. E.g. there is another very good restorer on KZbin (not mentioning his name to be fair) that posts nice videos… however if there are, for example, 24 screws to restore, he will display the process for each of them. Even with fast forwarding, it’s still little boring to watch. MyMechanics never does that; he shows the process for the first one and then he jumps to the conclusion… and this is one of the things that make his videos exceptional! I also appreciate that MyMechanics doesn’t verbally comment his job (geee… I hate when youtubers do that… in these cases, I would scream “JUST SHUT UP!!!”), his messages at the bottom are short and effective (and sometime they include a beautiful little touch of irony!) and his fingers basically “talk” while explaining what he is doing. Hope that he will stay in “business” for a long time! Thanks MyMechanics! :-)

Just such clean and exact work - as usual ! Would love to know how long your planning and design phase is because all your measurements and edges are just so precise and you think of every little detail along the way - like, 'why on earth did he notch out that knob he made for for the mesh lid?' - then you go hang the lid off the side for drainage and easy storage when in use- genius! The only other thing I could think of, which may be overkill, was some kind of hidden / slide out dispenser roll mounted for your foil roll so you could roll some off and then perhaps slide it back under the cabinet Beautiful work, as per usual!
