Hi Joe!I'm sure your trip, including this one to Kyushu, was very worthwhile. If so, why don't you visit the Japanese hobbyists next time? Although you all discuss pond construction so seriously, you visit breeders, but no one has visited Japanese enthusiasts to inspect their ponds.
@TheKoiPerspective28 күн бұрын
I would love to, I need to organise some time to do so! There are so much to learn from Japanese hobbyists

another good one! love these sunday talks 😁 I had air on my bottomdrain in my previous indoor pond. Had the same experience as Dave. The flow made a kind of votex in the pond and i was only getting big bubbles. My existing pond had normal bottomdrains, i have have taken the domes of, as Joe says it a huge flashpoint for the koi. Dave, about the airbar behind the skimmer. I made that on a timer, so every time the feeder goes on, the air at turns on and keeps the food away from going into the skimmer 😊

Another great Pod guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I agree with Dave on the size discussion it’s great to go big but it must be in balance, water volume, mechanical and bio filtration capability and as Joe said, if heating, related costs. When I built mine, Lau, James, Lee and others were all building and gave me loads of ideas of what I wanted and what I didn’t want. Keep up the good work guys 💪🏻👌🏻

Great pod cast some really good info there I also have one bottom drain completely flat bottom 5 m long 2m wide also have a mid feed that can have a 4” oase flouting skimmer in but haven’t yet used it it was bottom drain to nexus mid feed to nexus then I took a nexus out replace with Cetus sieve it didn’t work out for me so now have mid feed to pump over a shower
@TheKoiPerspective28 күн бұрын
Thanks Chris, not sure if you need the skimmer unless you have some form of debris entering the pond
@Brand-Family-Koi-Adventures28 күн бұрын
@ I have loads of debris and dust but I dnt tend to use the skimmer anyway it all end up sinking and going through the drain anyway so it’s all good

Big pipe work from bottom drain to filter and gravity fed is the way to go but each to there own. Fish will only grow to good water quality manual filter clean it every two weeks besides winter. Pays to salt a pond twice or three times a year any way just to keep your fishing looking banging 👍 ponds what are cladded in decking boards I love 😍
@TheKoiPerspective28 күн бұрын
I agree with you there mate!
@DennisGriffioen28 күн бұрын
At this moment I’m building a new pond. With Japanese style “filtration” With the focus on water processing (instead of filtration) creating an ideal environment for heterotrophic bacteria. High turn over (2,5x per hour) with minimal, but big dimension pipe work, energy efficient and a big filter. 35% of the pond volume. No pre filtration, full on low tech. No skimmer. This pond can run with fluctuating water levels. (Up to 40cm)
@TheKoiPerspective28 күн бұрын
Hey Dennis, sounds interesting, do you have a way to remove the waste? is it on a purge or vortex style system?
@DennisGriffioen28 күн бұрын
@ a bit difficult to explain in short. But I will keep a lot of waste in the system to create a bio rich environment. But excess waste can be removed with a muddrain. To many bad experience with leaking valves.

Does anyone have a timer set up on their pump, so it goes off before feeding.
@TheKoiPerspective27 күн бұрын
I thought about it for the skimmer issue Dave mentioned (Air Pump I presume you mean) but never got round to sorting it
@adrianmccollum279626 күн бұрын
@TheKoiPerspective I mean your water pumps, can these not be set on a timer to turn off just before feeding and then go back on 5 minutes after feeding?

Nice one gents - Just building a new pond just under 30,000 litres ... pretty good debate .... and has given me food for thought. I have a bespoke aeration system from Brandon as you discussed in the podcast currently being built with the corner piece as you described ..... not convinced about bottom drain however have designed my own version - I am nervous about cocking it up at times however if I'm honest, but the ride has been exhilarating - had to sell a kidney to pay for it all. Only kidding !!!! Have gone for an XL Oase Proficlear premium XL filter system - overfilter as you suggested in episode 1 together with the Proficlear Premium Fleece system to polish the water..... when your down south ( Hampshire) feel free to pop in :)
@TheKoiPerspective27 күн бұрын
sounds like an awesome pond and filter set up! - im sure you'll get it sorted. The aeration stuff from Aqua Aeration seems the bee's knees!
@JakeFordham-hi7fm28 күн бұрын
A good pound is above ground to save cost you can decide if you go for fibreglass or liner. Four foot is plenty deep enough un heated. Bottom drain good width and length for a good surface Area. All ponds in Japan are only four foot any winter over here your koi will be fine. Venturi a blade or six air stones in one of the back corners of the pond is fine. Best media for Baki showers is lava rock. 10 foot and above width for jumbo koi is the way to go really

Surely you are blowing the chlorine collected out of your dechlorinator at that pressure ? Especially if u using same dechlorinator for a trickle in aswell 🦊
@TheKoiPerspective26 күн бұрын
Hey Rob, what’s this in relation to mate?
@robfoxfoxy2226 күн бұрын
In relation to the burst of water when cleaning the drum , if ur dechlorinator is being used as trickle in & ur drum every time it runs is surely blowing the chlorine out that has already been collect ? 🦊
@robfoxfoxy2226 күн бұрын
Bcus flow threw that dechlorinator is so fast ? Only a thought 🦊
@TheKoiPerspective26 күн бұрын
I think we meant that we weren’t pre-filtering the water and it wasn’t through the dechlor mate for the drum, atleast that’s how mine is set up
@robfoxfoxy2225 күн бұрын
Ah right 😇 I don't run a drum , but when I finally get 1 I will certainly run cleaning straight from mains , as saves another pump that can go wrong 🙈 just making sure that not too much over spray goes back into pond 🦊
