I've seen quite a few videos of people making terminator parts by casting, which is great in its own way. But I have to admit, being a massive fan of the T-800 design and a fan of watching fabrication videos, your unique hand made/machined approach is a like a dream come true to watch! Thank you!! 😃

Yes, casting works well for some parts, but sometimes machining is the only way, though it often takes much longer.

Nice work.... Great solution for a fiddle set of parts... I use a 316 stainless steel for the mini pistons in the hands and I used 45% silver solder to make up a ball ends
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they were fiddly to make, especially the central cylinder with the lug on the side. I could have made this differently but I wanted to make it all in one piece rather than welding the lug on. The grade of stainless I'm using is 303, it's much easier to machine than other grades, especially drilling and threading, but it doesn't weld nicely.

Fantastic project. If I may ask, thematically, what are these jaw pistons supposed to do? There are three points of contact that are fixed. The bigger piston looks to pull the jaw away while the smaller one function seems to push the larger piston down. What are you thoughts on what the original purpose for these pistons were supposed to be?
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines 4 жыл бұрын
Good observation! I think when they designed the terminator they were more focused on making it look good on screen than it actually being an effective working mechanism. For the jaw to move in any direction all four pistons have to move by different amounts. For the jaw to open and close only the two larger cylinders are required, but to produce the same bite force as a human these would have to operate at a very high pressure, around 300bar, which is about the same pressure used by heavy construction equipment (excavators etc.). Possible I guess for a robot from the future. The two smaller cylinders, I think they added in that position to follow the nasolabial line (the line that goes from the edge of the nostril to the corner of the mouth when a human smiles). I think they did this to make it look more like a face, it's a very strange arrangement of cylinders, I've never seen one cylinder pull on the side of another one like this in real life, it would place a huge bending force on the piston rod. These two small cylinders could actually be used in conjunction with the larger ones to move the jaw from side to side, but in every other terminator skull I've seen the jaw can only pivot up and down (and is often just fixed in place). I modified mine to allow sideways movement as well. There are actually a lot of design considerations like this in the terminator endoskeleton, there's the well known continuity error at the end of the first film where they had to remove the neck piston rods to be able to tilt the head backwards and if you look at how the legs are designed it would actually have a very limited range of movement and would not be able to sit down or drive a car.

@@AndysMachines I see. So, for the viewer it was more for aesthetics. To fill in the black void. For the artist it was a way to create the nasolabial line landmark on the face once the skin tissue was applied. I always thought that it was strange to apply pressure or pulling pressure at the center of a piston like that. In my mind it was more of a guidance “rod”. I never liked that specific part as it added clutter to the already beautiful metallic jaw line design. I wanted to get your feedback on one more thing. Sideshow and Cinemaquette have both released (Stan Winston approved) endoskeleton busts but to me they look radically different and I don’t know why. The SS one looks thinner and more in line with my nostalgic memory of the T2 fiery scene of the endoskeleton just before it cuts away to the truck scene where Arnie teleports back in time. I believe it may have to do with optics and angles. The CM looks chunkier. Steve Jobs once said that a perfect cube does not look perfect to the human eye, you have to make it imperfect so that our brains get the illusion of perfection. I suspect that this is what SS has done.
@AndysMachines
@AndysMachines 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the different busts, I've only seen photos of them, maybe it's just how they've been photographed? There were also changes made between T1 and T2, and the newer 'Genisys' are different again, but mostly the body.

See this thread on the RPF forum. You might have to search through a bit but there are links to detailed drawings for many t800 parts: www.therpf.com/forums/threads/terminator-t-800-blueprints.140617/

@@AndysMachines I searched through the entire thread, and nothing on the jaw pistons. Only 2 things I have to go off of are the broken pieces that came with my vinyl kit, and the blueprints for a half scale Terminator that I've used to create my full scale T-800. I'll check out the jaw pistons on those and see what I can come up with. THX

@@scotty12181 I'm sure I've seen blueprints somewhere for these, but thinking about it, the original film prop was made with a combination of standard hardware parts and parts from a model aircraft kit. The RPF forum would be the place to search for specifics, but the threads may be 10+ years old so might take a lot of digging. More recently there was somebody on facebook who built a skull and he sourced all the parts for the jaw pistons, I think there were pictures with part numbers etc: facebook.com/Terminatorfullmetalskull

Hello, Very beautiful job. I'm curious to see how they'll work. They are hydraulic or pneumatic actuator ? I started the buiding of a "composite material T-800", which will be a robot controlled by artificial intelligence. I am currently working on the eyes, the most complicated part of the skull and maybe of the full T-800. With stereoscopic camera, red light and iris diaphragm. It will be built in three stages, talking/singing head, torso in a wheelchair then walking robot control by a Jetson Nano on ROS. In your videos I have not seen these future robot characteristics (brain, abilities). According to your first video, only voice and facial recognition. I'll try to base mine on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence, with mainly open-source scripts and software.

Thanks! These pistons will not actually move the jaw. I had to copy the T800 design of course, but they are just decoration as it's not really a good way to actuate the jaw. I will use two servo motors up inside the skull for the movement. Eyes are a good place to start, I usually like to start with one of the hardest parts, but I've left the eyes until now as I have several different ideas on how to make them. I'd be interested to see some video of your build/design if you have it?
@ledecoupeur4766

For the head I am based on a vinyl kit, it is partly already assembled. But the eyes are the part requiring the most changes. For mine even if it is plastic I try to have a similar functioning "to the real one". So the jaw works with 4 servomotors which simulate the 4 pistons. The head and the neck move with servomotors and pistons. I will try to make the rest of the body work with pneumatic pistons. That's why I love the design of the 800 Terminator, unlike many science fiction robots, we copy the design seen in the movies and it works. It is intended to have movement close to a human. Whether in science fiction or in reality, most robots can only open or close their hands, while the design of the Terminator allows much more movements. And the shoulders, I do not remember having already seen in real life a robot that can move its shoulders, the T-800 has 3 pistons on each shoulder for that. Maybe I would change my mind by building it, but for the moment I have not seen any part that requires a design change to make it work. Only the vertebrae which will fit into each other to ensure great flexibility in the spine and neck. For me, the biggest part will be the brain, that's why I do it in three steps. I would try to make him "intelligent" with the parts of the body that he will have as he goes along. Maybe he can help me build itself, lol An AI needs a lot of training (much more than a human), I think it will evolve a lot at the beginning in virtual environments to acquire bases of understandings of its environment. If I manage well I could start to educate him like a young child ^^ The most fun will be the Infiltrator mode, a latex mask, sunglasses, clothes and make him participate in a cosplay contest, disguised as "human". That's the dream, in the meantime, I will post about this project when he can sing, first thing he can do.

@@ledecoupeur4766 Sounds ambitious! I wish you luck with that and would like to see how you get on. Yes, the arrangement of the actuators is very well thought out in some places, particularly the hand and forearm which would allow a very human-like movement. Though it's not so good in other places, I think it would be very hard to make him walk using with the leg pistons as they are arranged and it would actually be impossible to sit down/stand up or kneel. That's why I'm not going to attempt a bipedal walking version, but I'm going to try and make the best use of the better parts of the design.
