a trick for dealing with chatter when milling the header flange is to single-point fly cut it. if you dont want to buy a special flycutting tool you could also just remove all but one insert from a facemill and adjust your feed rate accordingly.

@@asylumental the cutting bit he’s using has multiple cutting teeth. Removing all the teeth except one will eliminate the vibrations causing it to cut cleaner and less noisy and less sketchy. A tidbit of info on the coolant temp sensors that may help in the future. GM used the same resistance scale on their temps sensors on all efi engines since the 80s, and everything prior to the ls is 3/8" npt thread. you can use either sensor and the ecm/dash wont know the difference. there is even a 1/8 npt version in the 90s saturns that can work

Great content once again, thank you! Solution for the chatter when milling the flange: Single point flycutter! Do some research on it, buy one or make one yourself, test it on some scrap pieces and you'll regret not using one before. The finish you can get with it is absolutely 💯. A lathe would also be a great investment for the shop. Making bungs would become 10x easier even when you don't have the correct taps and dies. Single point cutting inside and outside threads is super easy and quick with a lathe. And then you could invest in some basic cheap metric and dies for cleaning up slightly damaged or fouled threads on bungs that are already welded in place.

A tip for flatness, use an endmill and have a bunch of passes, the small diameter helps reduce machine tram error making your surface flatter than with a big face mill. Also a small surface plate with some backside sticky sandpaper works great for a quick finish.

That power steering pump is actually perfect for the Mazda theme, even though it's a Corvette haha. The Mazda 3 and Volvo C30/S40/V50/C70 all shared some parts with the Focus as they were built on the same platform. Volvo and Mazda both used this FoMoCo power steering pump, whereas Ford didn't as they deemed it was too weak.

You need a fly cutter for stuff like that. Wheels (regardless of size) are for rigid cuts. Single point fly cutter for anything that's flapping in the breeze. ALSO, you need an adjustable jack set, would've been perfect to stack under the pipes when you made the cut, to reduce, somewhat, all that chatter.

Don't you want less heat on the turbos? Heat kills bearings, but most importantly if your turbo is hot that means your intake temperature is hot and we all know hot air equals less HP. So technically the further away from the exhaust ports the cooler it'll be giving it more power. Or am I missing something
@Thee_Snow_Wolf
@Thee_Snow_Wolf 2 жыл бұрын
While indeed heat kills bearings, the bearings themselves are lubricated and most importantly cooled with the oil. So as long you can regulate the oil temperature, you shouldn't have turbo life concerns. As for the higher intake air temps, you can always use a larger / more effective intercooler to remove the excess heat from the intake air. For a turbo engine you always want to trap as much heat as possible inside of the headers. The exhaust headers they use in F1 are ceramic coated and fitted with heat shielding. While some of that is to protect items near the exhaust, another part of this is to make such as much heat as possible is spinning that turbine.
