Be cool if when they implement passenger trains you would make your own towns so the buildings would be useful. More buildings in the area the more passengers you'd have available to move. To the other towns and possibly to the industries

There's definitely something planned for passenger transport, but they didn't have that ready. They asked on their discord, if people wanted the car early instead of waiting until passenger transport was working and this is what we got.

15:53 So if I assume correct, the reason why the grade changed between straight and curved for you here is because it’s trying to lay a smooth gradient from the 0% of the last piece to the desired 1%. The problem is that it only tries to smooth straights, curves get set to 1% almost immediately, so if you put an intermediate 0-1% piece first, and then lay 1%, the result will be a true 1% grade.

I will also add that small log cars are not only better for space efficiency, but also because the cars weigh so little compared to the bigger ones or skeleton cars, you can pull more. Definitely the way to go.

Personally i would go in the log drop off do a loop over the water and come back the log pick up on the way back so its just one big loop instead of yards having to stop and switch. But it is interesting the logistics of stopping and switching with yards

And shunting is more realistic, especially for an industrial setting. Yeah it wasn't efficient but that wasn't their priority, they just wanted to get the products processed by any means

Another great video and what an idea having a shunting yard in front of the sawmill, wouldn't have thought of it! Figured you'd extend the dock to circle back around from the drop off to the pick up to make an artificial lake to contain the logs, but I can see your reasoning. A multiplayer event on your railway would be splendid! I'm looking for the next steam sale to grab my copy and be ready to play!

The sawmill and ironmine are shaped in a way that only really fits their original placement on the pine valley map. There is no good place for the sawmill on this map, so that's how you end up with it being what it is here. The difference between bends and straight parts is that when changing grade, the straight uses it's entire length for the transition (so only reaching the set grade at the end) while the bends behave differently. So if you make a short piece going from 0% to -1% first, everything after should work out the same. Cars don't derail anymore just from speed, however only the regular sited cars are really stable. If you were to build you train with 100 tiny cars, you'd likely spend more time re-railing them than anything else. Montezuma is arguably a downgrade to the Porter and the Eureka isn't faster either. Glenbrook is the best for early game speed.
@Ronald.Golleher
@Ronald.Golleher 9 ай бұрын
They could have made a little bit of the lake specifically for the sawmill to fit, like if they had dug out some of the lake to make a pond attached. Obviously, they really would have built to the lake they were building on.
@yannickgamper6507
@yannickgamper6507 9 ай бұрын
I just looped a regular track on bank through the lake from the drop off to the pick-up. Works fine, looks realistic enough and also feels sensible because then you have an enclosed water space so the logs don't drift off into the lake
@niiinaa
@niiinaa 9 ай бұрын
The reason why the height is different when you're doing a turn vs not doing a turn is because of how the game models the tracks when going into gradients. When you lay straight track it will gradually increase the gradient over the distance you set. When you go to a curve the gradient goes to what you set it to instantly. You can see this really well if you go from -10 to +10 percent gradient.

I agree with you that this game has all the bones to require a player to provide the resources to craft the tracks between locations. If you had to cut the logs, and smelt the iron to make rails, and maybe *buy* the hardware until you provide for yourself, then the game would be a challenge. Having barely enough starter money, a manual handcar locomotive? Then you can afford Betsy, and maybe even needing to chop wood to fill the hoppers? It would be incredible gameplay. Ultimate would be passenger ferry to distant city locations.

The Eagle Lake and West Branch Railroad (Northern Maine's Eagle Lake and the West Branch of the Allagash River) had a similar way of unloading. They had traveled from the shores of Eagle Lake, where the logs were loaded by conveyor to the top of their log cars, (similar to open hoppers but with opening sides), over an outlet of Chamberlain Lake to Umbazookus Lake (a native American name) where the unloading trestle was. It had a slight curve and was super elevated to help them roll off easily. When unloading, an employee (likely a log driver) would pull the pins and the door would fly out as the logs splashed into the water, to be driven towards mills in areas around (I believe) Bangor.

Also- my fix for turning around at the sawmill was a siding with one switch, and a turntable in place of the other switch. That way I park the train, run around, turn around, and connect to head back to the logging camp. The Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington Railway Museum did the same on their Trout Brook extension. They use the turntable as a switch, works well on 2 foot gauge

In Bayfield Wisconsin, if you can find the Sandborn Fire Maps, take a look at the waterfront. I don't know that they unloaded logs into Lake Superior there, but it wouldn't surprise me. Anyway the railroad spent about 1/2 a mile running along the shore on a long trestle until the land came back out to meet the track at the desired grade. The C&NW(?) then went north to Red Cliff where it joined up with two logging railroads.

The closest to a train dock I can think of are the taconite dock that load lake freighters on the Great Lakes. They have rails on top that drop loads of taconite (iron ore pellets) into storage beneath the rails, and then the storage loads into the freighters. But those are absolutely massive and are usually 1,200 to 2,300 feet long, 50 to 100 feet wide, and about 75 feet tall to accommodate the 1,000 by 105 foot lake freighters.

Can I point out that the more balloon loops you use & the less intricate yards & shunting areas, that the more time in your A-B journey you spend out of it unloading & loading... it's worth even using industrial areas & transfer yards to make it more like a journey & less like a conveyer belt. Good for merry-go-round IRL high-throuput stuff ( and factorio ), not good for involvement. That's a neat trick with the trestle & the buffers.

Around the great lakes, they used to have rail car ferries. The track ran right to the pier and would connect to a ship with a rail yard on deck. They'd load and lash the cars, cross the lake, and then have another locomotive unload and send the train on to the destination instead of driving around the lake. More than one vessel was lost because the railroad thought the boat could keep to a time table, regardless of weather.

the ground being higher next to the lake actually makes sense if the lake floods (which, given the surrounding mountains, makes a lot of sense) you see the same thing with a lot of rivers, it's a structure called a natural levee. basically, when they lake floods, the lake sediment gets deposited, and most of it gets deposited closer to the shore. over time it builds up into the slopes like the one in game.

I built my log unload track similar to the Iron Ore docks on Lake Superior in Duluth, MN and Superior, WI where it is a bridge out over the lake but it doesn’t go all the way over the water with the beams and lumber as a loop track that goes out over the lake from the beam and lumber platforms to the other side of the log unload dock. And already built my line up to the iron mine with a start of a line to the smelter.

So....issue with the little cars. Once you have a bigger locomotive they go flying when you barely bump them. You either have to be SUPER careful, or rerail a lot.
