The idea I was thinking was going 2% across those ridges in big big curves (where possible), having a long flat switching track to fit an entire train. It would be very slow going, going up a bit, switchback go in reverse, up a bit, switchback go in forward, rinse and repeat. I wonder if you could do a ring rail, like in DVS. That guy would run freight depot> sawmill> mine> smelter> etc etc>>. A big loop would require passing track segments every so often, but IRL alignments are built like that anyway. In automotive highway engineering, 11% is a big grade, and freight trucks are limited (in most cases) to 80k lbs, with most avg vehicles coming in at 5k lbs (US) [2.4t?); sooooo 4% with a few hundred times that weight? Insanity. Love it. Bring Hyce.

My Hyce sense is tingling. He just might break his vow of never playing RRO ever again just to show up one more time to scream and shout at you kAN to beat in everything you're forgetting that he taught you and to give a brief critique on the "new" content. Also, I just feel like at some point when you show him that you can force Betsy to go just a notch over 3x's her listed max speed, he just might do a Scotty impression from Star Trek. I mean at some point "Yer giv'n 'er all yer got, Cap'n!!" and it's impressive she didn't just alt+f4 earlier. You could honestly make a longer "empty pull" track and then have that track as the gravity train track.

I did my alignment at mostly 2% by running around the far side of the lake, connecting to the iron mine first, and then swinging around the ridge up to the smelter. I did have to do two large spirals where the track loops back and bridges over itself once to make up the height difference.

The gen 1 locos, with the exception of the geared, all have a "limit" of 15 under power. The later gens go somewhere in the 20s, and the new Lima goes 30. There is no hard limit to rail speed now. People have gotten them well over 100 with some roller-coaster tracks.

I have made a line that runs between the logging camp and melts 1.5% with a 0% section up in the mountains. At 15 mph it takes about 17 minutes to get up, but it's a really nice ride. I have also made a 1.5% up to the iron mine. It goes around the lake and follows the river up to the waterfall before the long climb up. I have also made a line between the iron mine and smelter which is also 1.5%. I have connected all points on the new map. The steepest climb I have is 2.5% on a line directly between the oil field and the refinery, but it is mostly built because I wanted a line up to some of the rock formations that are that way.

I was having soooo much used up time just for making my own rr, in my opinion you should use 30m curve everywhere, and if you're not planning on just selling logs, you should buy a shay. And in addition, I made a straight line curving from the depot, to the iron mine and the smelter, and I had to make it a 7% gradient. You need to buy a shay to do that climb, going with only four cars

The way I did it was to go around the lake in a CCW direction from the saw mill to the Ironworks and coal mine. I put a parking area for trains at coal mine with a turnstile and a siding for parking cars. From the coal mine, I started a 1.5% grade bridge up to the iron mine going around the lake. From the Iron mine, I created a 2.5% grade bridge up to the smelter. I had to make a big loop to get it up the hill though. I deliver the lumber to the coal mine, park the cars and then use the Shay to take it up to the iron mine and use the Shay to deliver the Iron ore and cordwood to the smelter. ETA: Your experience with the stub switch is the reason that I don't use them. ETA again: From the iron mine to the coal mine I can coast all the way at a max speed of around 25 with no derails. (You should have seen my first track. Had a 4.5% grade from the lake to the mine. I was able to coast downhill at 40 with no derails) I can also coast down from the smelter to the iron mine but, there's a couple of sharp corners that are really scary to go around at high speed so I use the reverser and just putt down at about 5mph.

It trigger me so much that Kan is connecting the smelter before the Iron mine and not in the right place, directly at the sawmill, like the precedent map, but it need iron and cordwood who are at the iron mine and at the logging camp --'. The sawmill need to be connected to all the other industry, principally the Iron mine. But I agree that the smelter is sooo high on a short distance.

12:06 where you're at at that point I think go onto the ridge ahead of you and do a hairpin instead of continue ahead and make a mini-gigabridge. (You should see how Bluewizard did his smelter route for all the wrong reasons, it goes through the iron mine and its mostly skybridge..) Remember: it's okay to use curves of 37 meter radius on the mainline every once in a while. That spot at 25:35, put a 40 meter radius hairpin in there with a 4% grade and it works out On Pine Valley, the sawmill area has always been an important yard location since it's at the throat of the two most important passes to the smelter valley, those being the obvious one at low elevation and the one up through the Northwestern Canyon. The speed limit back in the day was implemented because the game could not handle the physics calculations needed to support anything going over 18 mph. Now with the UE5 engine it can, and also gravity is double that of what it once was which also helps.

I really do enjoy this new map, like you say, they haven't given you any paths to follow, you have to figure out the route yourself and while the open plains are a bit boring to drive over it's a fun challenge to build the tracks. I have made it to the smelter, mine, sawmill and lumberyard but I started a new game where I'm looking at building with very few loops......which probably will end up being loops all over anyway, but yeah, giving shunting a shot :)

DOWN HILL RUN- how it looks to me, If you kept tension on the pins with just a little brake it probably would have made it down without breaking off in the middle first. shifting forces with nothing tied(brakes) shook the middle car(s) off the rail and then made them into a spring between the outer cars, and the opposing forces ripped them further off the rails. with the down hill, it would be best to keep the brake on the back car, to keep the cars in "light" tension(a full load at 4% will for sure need at least 1 car at 80% brake and another at ~20-30% with 6 to 8 cars.).
