Moss. Also, seeing the deer. If one jumped on top or even stepped on top of the shelter, would it hold? Unlikely to happen I know, but not a nice way to wake up 😂 Maybe a venison stew for next time?

Excellent video, thanks. It must have been a thrill to see those deer. I think they were roe deer. It also sounds like you have plenty of bird life in your wood. Here in NZ we have some unique bird species, but not the same variety as in the UK. But I have seen dolphins in Wellington harbour from my office window, and I saw some orca going home on the train the other night.

can you use the clay on top of the leaves, pack it down, then add moss for a more waterproof living roof? Stegt Flæsk , Haggis, Pasty, Pierogi, Cordon Bleu, Hassenpfeffer in your pressure cooker (you can fake it and use chicken if you can't get a rabbit). How long will this shelter survive?

I think leaves are better than moss. People roaming the forest find spots with moss more interesting than plain foliage, so they're more likely to go to that spot and look. consequently, a canopy of leaves is better, offers more camouflage

I’m not from the UK, and I’ve never seen one in real life, but I’m nearly 100% positive those were a couple of female Roe deer. Common in your area, and the lighter, reddish coat is more indicative of females, whereas the males are really dark brown! Awesome experience to see them so close! Hunting Whitetail here at home last year, I had a small male come right under my tree stand and laid down to bask in the sun for a good 20 minutes!

Great shelter I military they'd call it a hide. Really low profile plus it will return to nature with minimal disturbance to the area good for a season or two, How about pulling back leaves then putting on thatch reed roof moss and some leaves to blend it in if you were to roll some camo tarp and some second hand blankets you'd have good bedding bring your pooch along and a Colman 2 burner propane you'd have a couple fun videos and a good time to be had pulling some or a blanket or even a canvas or tarp and it be a decent shelter like a bivy or a bivouac. Maybe set up a game cam and harvest a meal not necessarily a deer but maybe a rabbit or a bird of sort pack in a chicken make a feast of it along with your best buddy.. awesome. Best David If you're going through rain cut drainage maybe some tarp to send rain off from roof rather then a clay filled trench complete with mud; that be not so fun but pull back roof to sticks add arms full of reeds after a tarp moss then leaves cut in drainage taking care that it doesn't weep into your clay ground beneath it could be cozy and a sight to behold
@jerridcook8811

As well as the shelter blends into the forest floor it's hard to argue that the leaves wouldn't be best for camouflage. Maybe do moss then leaves on top?

Can you build a shelter from living saplings bending them over into a kind of tunnel and constantly manipulating them, just as the support framework and then when you need it you can just throw a tarp over or clingfilm it for the night. I know it would take a few seasons but could be a good project. I saw a fallen ash tree that still had a root system and new branches were growing all along the trunk straight up, so thats what made me think of this, if 2 trees were down next to each other with a gap it would maybe happen naturally

Moss OR more leaves? It's NOT just a matter of opinion. Moss is really good at soaking up moisture but it will stand out on the leafy forest floor in your location. Moss is a good insulator in comparison to leaves, which seem to endlessly compact over time. Moss tends to stay in place, while leaves blow in the wind. YOU are the man who has done this stuff for years: what would you say to a layer of moss with leaves on top for camouflage?
