Tip that I worked out for soldering onto these difficult flat surfaces that don't solder very well (and may come loose with use) after doing some keyboard controller hacking: Rather than glue gun it everywhere, buy the smallest drill bit you can find (I believe it's either 1mm or 0.5mm) and drill a hole through where you want to solder it to. Poke the wire through from the opposite side, and bend the exposed part of the wire down over the contact. Solder that down, and it will stay pretty well, because the solder will not allow the wire to pull back through the hole.

Ahh! I can’t believe I ever recommended this! (Your recent like notification pulled it up) The correct way to do this is to simply use flux. It was invented to make strong solder joints and this is the perfect situation. I use a “flux pen” it is very convenient. Simply apply a liberal amount of flux to the contact pad and also the wire. Then get some solder and start soldering them together. The flux will fizzle and burn off all the oxide and any dirt and impurities and the solder joint will be rock solid. No destructive drilling necessary.

Look at where the bumpers are from the top of the controller (ie you can see the name of LT, RT engraved on the triggers). You can see that the bumpers are just little dimples, one for RB, one for LB. Near those dimples are two little metal contacts that go to the board. The left metal contact on each bumper is ground, the right is signal. You should "tin" the solder to the right contact. (look up tinning). Unfortunately, yes, you will have to solder to the scraped dpad buttons. Good luck!

I think part 2 is that after 13 years…I still love this stuff but there’s more options for controllers on the market like the 8bitdo arcade stick 😂. I run retropi in a nespi case now. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks dude. Fellow Australian too, it only twigged when you mentioned Jaycar. I'm doing this myself right now, turns out there's not really any way to play those 4 player games on Steam that expect xbox controllers when you're running your arcade controls through an IPAC4. The computer sees it as a keyboard and you're shit out of luck. So I'm keeping the IPAC to handle the "system" buttons and about to hack apart some cheap xbox360 controllers for each of the 4 controls, and I'll use Joy2Key profiles to map them to keyboard keys for the few games that don't support controllers.

I've watched so many of these videos and I still can't figure out how to connect the arcade stick to the buttons. My arcade stick has five prongs sticking out the side, do I need to hook it up to the PCB that came with the stick? Are four of the prongs positives and the fifth one a ground??
@stratisfire12 жыл бұрын
there are a couple of fighting games that use the triggers, such as marvel vs capcom.
@moisessalazar34209 жыл бұрын
What can you use to find a ground and what exactly do you do when you daisy chain. And how many buttons can you daisy chain before having to solder to another ground.

Thanks for the video but please, please invest in a tripod and slow down a little when talking. lol Other than that it's a interesting video.

@Quekil830 - the technique is called "tinning". Search for a video, it's pretty straight forward.

great video man. i was wondering where do get the buttons and joy stick at? i have all my wire conncetions so far except for the triggers and i heard that you need some type of resistor or something because they work differently then buttons. nice stick man

I am doing that today.I found some idea and will try them. But did you find a solution in 12 years ?
@DisL0gic15 жыл бұрын
I havnt connected the triggers. Because they are analogue, they are pretty useless as buttons because they arent "on/off". It is possibly though, but you need to remove the plastic arms. Yep the pads are the same as the buttons. Down to the copper. I hope you've got a fine iron, as it can be fiddly.

@Fibr3Optix 16 connector molex/plastic plug with that I found in the electrical store. You can only have either IPAC or Xbox connected at one time, else you get all kinds of crazy grounding issues. So I have to unplug/plug when going between the two. Im sure there is a way to use a switch. I believe all the new ones are J7, you cant tell from the outside...mmmmaybe a serial number, but I'd have no idea? Good luck!
@Fibr3Optix13 жыл бұрын
I noticed you have an iPac controller as well. 1. How did you connect the XB controller and the iPac to one set of buttons? 2. How do you find out if the controller is a J7? Is there a way to see that in the packaging?

Hi, a question? The joystick is wireless, how is the response of the joystick, is fast? really fastest? or slightly slower. Or is recommended do that with a wired joystick? There is a considerable difference in response speed with the wired joystick? Thanks in advance.

can a short be turning the controller all crazy at times? also can i use the same ground for all the buttons? when i say all buttons that also means the stick
@DisL0gic14 жыл бұрын
@CarlonchoMS It's just as fast as an Xbox 360 controller because it is an xbox controller. Im sure you can google how many milliseconds that is, but it's negligible.

@DisL0gic13 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's pretty likely when moving the controls around that the solder will come off. It happens. You just have to resolder...hacking wasnt meant to be easy :P
