This seems like one of those part and parcel sort of scenarios where it's very context-sensitive depending on the person. Where relentlessly beating someone down under the guise of "Toughining them up for the real world" is just very reductive, and does even more harm than good. And is what some people claim to be 'brutal honesty", or "unfiltered criticism" is really just repackaged bullying. It's basically just another misguided attempted to "course correct" on the participation award mentality. Yet again, certain people swing too hard in the polar opposite direction. On the flipside; there are certainly people who are so caught up in their own delusions of grandure, so coddled, surrounded by yes men and enablers, who never had their ideas challenged, that you need to take the kid gloves off and give them a firm verbal slamming. These are the type of people who love to hide behind the "innocent babyfaced small bean" facade and are quick to cry about being the target of bullying and cower behind their white knights whenever they're confronted on their actions. The "Weaponized vunerability" effect so to speak. Because, there's a galaxy of difference between being honest and open about your struggles, and using your trauma as an easy get out of jail free card from any consiquences, and an excuse to be a toxic person. Ultimately, while I'm a firm beliver of holding people to your own standards, it's also important to weigh each individual on a case by case basis.
