Because survival historically is more important than love. So the best hunter, farmer, leader or king would be the one to keep her alive. Weak men may not survive. Simply put men are more able to survive without women but women could not without men easily survive. That's why society is so backwards today cause men hold to their normal husbandry standards innately overall while women are rejecting their role and abandoning family creation and care for careers.
