This class teaches students why they should set up a separate Computer Lab network on their home network if they will be creating test servers and networks. It also explains the basic concepts such as; Port Forwarding to Multiple Layers of Routers, the Need for Different IP Subnets on the Same LAN, and that Conflicting Server Services can cause odd problems.

Reasons for a Separate Computer Lab Network-- DNS and DHCP issues, performance problems
Lab Network must be on a different IP Network then other LAN Networks. 192.168.1.x, 192.168.2.x, 192.168.3.x
For access to servers form outside world port forwarding on your ISP Router must be pointed at the Router for your Lab Network
Any $60 Linksys Router can be used to create a lab network.
Lab Network Router External Interface needs to be configured to be on the same network as the ISP Router's Internal Interfaces.

Connect the port to a switch and then connect one of the ports on the switch to your Lab Router. Connect all of your home PCs to the switch... Connect all of your lab systems to the internal port of the Lab Router...

I found an old RV-042 in my employers broom-closet/boiler-room/.... "server" room... I brought it home to use as my home lab router. this was the first video I found and was blown away that you were using the same one in your tutorial.... and almost strange that it even had custom labels of the exact same size and placement on the top...

he meant, he himself has a video explaining what that is, which is a 15-20 minute concept - if explained in this video, would deviate us from learning the concept he's trying to teach. It's just that some half-wit dumb as#es with a shorter attention span may not be able to follow if the class deviates into too many concepts and complain in the comments portraying how incompetent and clueless they are to just patiently listen to a video to understand it, despite appreciating the effort he put in, while the same will be taught with not even half the quality of how he does for ridiculously high fee.

Eli did not mention this in the video, but you will need to add a static route on your 192.168.1.1 router pointing all IP packets from 192.168.2.0/24 to your 192.168.1.2 lab router.

Great teacher TBH. Probably the most important step of his teaching is that he reviews and summarizes at the end to make sure the entire topic is clear. Some "teachers" are experts at what they do, but are awful at breaking things down because they assume you will pick it up quickly. To an instructor that already knows the subject matter, it may seem to be something that should be easily understood because they are already very familiar with it. Knowing your students' level of expertise and breaking it down in the correct way is extremely important when teaching.

Unfortunately, no consumer based routers I know of have definable routing features that I know of. If you have a lot of old hardware lying around check if you have any which are compatible with DD-WRT, at minimum you can define routes from LAN to WAN ports. Alternatively if you have computer parts lying around a good way to get into is is to put together a computer with several NIC's and install linux or even dedicated router distro's. Its a good start to get familiar with it

I need to test with Windows 2012, but many times in Server 2003 and 2008 Windows will shut down its open DHCP server if it detects another DHCP server on the network...

Trying to wrap my head around this. Quick questions. So if the DNS and DHCP servers of all 3 routers are enabled does that mean that each DNS and DHCP server on each of the 3 routers are in 3 different subnets? And if this is the case does a DHCP server of a router ABOVE another router treat the router below it exactly the same as it would a client computer the way in which it assigns it an IP Address, such as the way (i believe the external address)WAN1 IP: is 10.247.248.122 in the video at 10:46.

brilliant video's, many thanks for your time and expertise, just a quick note. If you do not want to shell out for a separate router and hardware, you can create a virtual router in Hyper-V. VMWare or other virtualisation software that will give you the network separation you require, without additional hardware :)

nice job man. the only thing that could be confusing for beginners is tthat what you explain in the theory on the board, about the ip adresse settings for the lan network, you used different range of ipadresses then actually that you configured on your own network.

This is also the case in Server 2012, if you plug in a router to the network it kicks off the 2012 DHCP server sometimes DNS too.

Great video, Eli! Really clarified a few things for me. However, do you have a video on how to connect the routers? This video assumes an ethernet cable connection, but what if you can't run cable between floors? Is there a way to connect the routers wirelessly? That would be awesome!

+Steve Richardson Yes, that would be with bridge mode, or wireless bridge mode. Look it up! Now I don't about setting up different networks with that. I'm guessing once you have a bridge connect another routher to the bridge and then continue on with the setup. But that's my guess.

Hey Jason, I HIGHLY recommend you watch Eli's video on Subnetting. EDIT: Sorry Jason was completely talking out of my ass before; basically as long as you have your static routes predefined on your router and, as Eli mentioned in the video, have the communicating ports on the same prefix your networks should be able to communicate. Unfortunately you will not be able to do this with the router you are using.

Eli, You are simply the BEST!!! now I have a problem, With a fresh install of WS-2012R2, I have all my client computers assigned and working but it takes forever to log in for each client. Once it gets to "WELCOME" it hangs for over 5 min or more before the Desktop opens. What could be the problem. It is with any client computer
