This cat just explained more about the shell length problem with certain inertia driven shotguns than all the bright minds at federal ammunition company. They oughta write you a check sir, cause I argued with them over this problem for a month and never got a straight answer. You not only presented the problem but gave the solution. Bravo, well done sir.

So essentially there is little to no professional loading equipment needed to hand roll these beauties! That’s awesome. I did not know this. Now that I do though, I’ll be rolling my own from here on out. Love the TSS but those babies are high and getting higher, sometimes hard to find too. Thanks Dave!

Dave, good video. Now a word about shop safety. 1)wear safety glasses reloading. 2) see #1 3) see #1. You did a lot of banging the hull while looking at it from overhead. Don't have to guess what would happen if a TSS pellet found its way under the primer on the table. Also an old tip from a 60 year old Lyman reloading handbook. Start with all hull mouths down in the loading block and turn it upright after putting in the powder. This will help prevent failure to load and double charging should you get distracted. Keep up the good work.

Something soothing about handloading. Grew up loading trap shells with/for my Dad back in the late 70's before it became too expensive in his opinion. Been thinking about this recently as I've decided to try Turkey hunting with a shotgun instead of the bow this year, and 2 3/4" 12 gauge (going to use Dad's Winchester 1200 trap gun) have been few and far between here lately.

Good Video! I have the same load data from Hal. I like how you use the ratchet and the 1/2" bolt. I'm going to give those two a go the next time I roll a few shells. For the particular load you are using in your video tutorial, I prefer to take the wads, add the cork, and the mylar before I insert them into the hulls. I'll get the powder in the hulls first, then I prepare the wads with the cork and mylar. Then insert the prepared wads into the hulls. It seems a bit easier, especially inserting the mylar this way. Take Care

Get the 16/20 mylar and you don’t have to trim. Fits perfect. I was not getting good patterns and with the mylar and Hal told me to try it without. My pattern went from 250 in the 10” to 350 without. The mylar is supposed to protect the barrel but Hal said you would probably be okay with 9’s.

I found this very interesting and have wanted to do this for many years. That desire intensified after that video with Sleazy and that wild hunt that ended up with him taking a bird with the shell with his Dads ashes. Thank you for sharing this information. I can see you and Chubbs at it now. As if this video wasn’t enough, would it be feasible to do one on your vest? I noticed some modifications in the straps that look like Claw slings. Your attention to detail in your approach is great! Makes me feel a little less unusual.

The Mylar is a PIA I ended up switching to TPS wads and stopped using Mylar. I also had cycling issues in a Benelli even after shortening the shell as you did. I found the issue for me was the area at the end of the Mag. The corners are rounded unlike a lot of guns that are more squared. If you get a gaep roll crimper it will leave the roll crimp outer edge more curved inward allowing it to cycle. Nice video!

I am started to load my own TSS for a 20 gauge Franchi. Could I ask what the beginning and end length (after roll crimping) your 20 gauge shells are that cycle out of your Benelli? Thank you! If my lengths are the same as yours and I still have problems I will buy one of the Gaep roll crispers.

They Mylars drove me nuts trying to keep them down in the wad. I ended up switching to TPS wads and stoped using Mylar. The Mylar is really only there to protect the barrel, the TPS wads are thicker. I have examined many after test shots and pellets do not press thru the wad at all. Unlike a CSD wad with out Mylar which you will find where pellets have pressed thru the wad.

I didn't read all of the comments, but did anyone mention or ask, "why not just use a longer piece of mylar instead of using two pieces cupped inside one another"?
