Well I am old now but it was common to stand up when a teacher or for that matter when anyone entered the room .It is a sign of respect for the other person and one must say "won't you sit down? and when they are seated and comfortable, proffer them a glass of sherry no matter what time of day it is .Also hand write thankyou notes. Consider others before your self . A good officer will water the horses, feed the men and only when that is satisfactory should he attend to his own needs

Manners are sadly missing in today’s society I believe it comes from the home. We were taught to stand up in a tram or train for the elderly and pregnant women. Maybe teaching manners in schools, would be a good thing ✅

@@paulus121212 Gosh, I'm so grateful to Joanna for being so normal, so like us plebs, she even does her own washing and goes on the tube. It's so reassuring, so good of her to let us know. Even those silly people who didn't know or understand what they were doing voting Brexit - if only they had known Joanna cleans her own toilets and knew all about Europe and how she went there in the 60's and it had all moved on. So thrilling she goes to Waitrose - so do I! So thrilling, thrilling.

Ms. Lumley is a delight and her comments are insightful. We need to hold onto these values because I don't know where this new generation is going. Or maybe it's just my age talking (50's). I don't know what society will value in 100 years. But, I really see that this mode of politeness and respect is dwindling.

Anyone who uses the word Oleaginous is someone you want to have a conversation with. I agree with her about Japan. When you visit the country you are immediately struck by how well mannered and polite Japanese people are. It is really another level which we do not have anywhere else on the planet. But i lived in Japan 32 years so after a while it did get a tad oleaginous. But when i moved back to the UK, it took me 5 years to reacclimate myself to the rudeness of people and it was utter agony. In my years in Japan i never locked my door, left my wallet on the table next to my computer and my iphone when i went to use the restroom anywhere public. I walked alone at night in any area in japan and was never worried one second for my life or my safety. Having to fear people again, was the hardest thing to do for me and i became absolutely paranoid and locked myself in my house for weeks sometimes because i couldn't face the outside world in the UK which i found, dirty and unsafe, and unruly, and couldn't fathom why people were so angry and violent. Even today, i still hate when people act without civility. Japan was too polite but the UK is a disaster of incivility and i would choose Japan over the UK any day if i could, because there is no greater luxury than safet and being surrounded with polite people in a highly sophisticated country.
