why isnt anyone talking about how much darren criss actually looked like cunanan? and both darren and andrew are half-filipinos
@lxrmusic73396 жыл бұрын
And both feel very self important right away - and Cunanan, the fucker was said to have an IQ over 140, but the successful destiny that he was pushed for by his parents drove him mad and sociopathic. We are living in an age of the superficial and I think that's what connects Versace and his killer. As much as society will boost the ego of the consumer, fashion is just the best way to draw out narcissism and early forms of sociopathy. I feel zero sympathy for any of the real people portrayed in this story. You live in a world of Kardashian mentality, maybe you need to be erased from history : next. The only sympathetic element of this show is Edgar Ramirez - but not his character.
@oliviaandrade83506 жыл бұрын
Also Edgar Ramirez looks a LOT like Gianni Versace
@tori2dles5 жыл бұрын
Nani Chantel - I’ve written that in various video comment sections, too. Darren has mentioned that, as well, that it was eerie for him to see pics of Cunanan. The 1/2 Filipino connection also partially freaked him.
@tori2dles5 жыл бұрын
LXR Music - The series actually showed quite a sharp contrast between Giani & Andrew in that respect. Over and over, it was shown how very down to earth and grounded Versace was. He was portrayed as a man who came from very humble beginnings; beginnings he never forgot and deeply cherished. He was a man who was connected and committed to his loved ones. Along with the interpersonal, Versace worked diligently at his craft so that he could support himself with his artistry. He didn’t want his creativity and desire to spread beauty to merely be a hobby. He had a dream to design clothing as a child and his mother trained him in dressmaking since he was a little guy. So the opulence surrounding him wasn’t him being pretentious or showing off to impress others. His opulence was an extension of his creativity and desire to spread beauty wherever he was. He saw beauty as a healing, nurturing force. The point is, he was genuine. Andrew Cunanan was raised to believe he was special and more important than others in that specialness. His father objectified him and placed him on a pedestal, just as he objectified others and trampled them under his feet. So Andrew wasn’t taught empathy or compassion. He was taught that he deserved the best simply because he existed and that others were put on earth to serve him and cater to his whims. As long as he believed his father was a rich stock broker with Merrill-Lynch, this façade gave Andrew a sense of stability. But when his father abandoned the family, sold the home and fled the country with the entire family wealth, he realized his whole life was predicated on a lie. But Andrew didn’t know how to start from something small and build up. He was used to luxury and favoritism at the get-go, not working to achieve something and celebrating the achievement. He wanted instantaneous reward and recognition without commensurate effort or achievement. His relationships were shallow and he didn’t feel actual love, though he was obsessed with the fantasies of perfect, illustrious, ideal love. He could not be himself as he didn’t know who he truly was. He could only project images of what he thought others wanted to see enough to hook them emotionally. Then he’d feed off the attention he garnered from that until he became bored or they rejected him. There was no authentic self, only a false self. Andrew’s addiction to riches was materialism through and through. Whereas Giani’s opulence came from a true artist’s heart, Andrew’s came from delusions of grandiosity and a compulsion to exploit.

@nunnayrbznz35766 жыл бұрын
Edger Ramirez was absolutely perfect in this role. He exuded beauty, empathy, kindness that one wouldn't expect in a cursory view of a celebrity. He really found the heart of this beautiful man so cruelly snuffed out and whose love for his partner of 15 years was so horribly discounted, Especially how his family ignored his wishes for his love after his death, That in itself is yet another crime committed by Gianni's own family who he gave so much to. They are offensive in living off his legend but giving his heart and his wishes no consideration. Part of Gianni's magic came from the love he was lucky to have for so long. As a gay man his own family dismissed his heart, the FBI dismissed the importance of following up and doing a normal job in investigating a serial killer who left his footprints in full view!

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, the Cunanen character is the "sexy" one, which is kind of sick, but he's the one "everybody" wants to see. I think Edgar Ramirez is EVERY BIT the actor the Cunanen guy is, he's just by nature quieter, less fired up, as Versace was in life compared to Cu.

Godblessme Imhawt I agree and frankly this Darren guy thinks he is better than he really is. His acting is actually really boring. I think the Versace series has launched two new wonderful actors into our midst. New to the general public only, I'm sure. They are both absolutely astonishing in their roles as Gianni Versace and Andrew Cunanen. Of course I mean the above, Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss. The visuals in this show are mindblowing too. Best for TV series I've ever seen. Because the story is simple in it's way, (tortured soul kills famous person out of resentment) the set designer and director have a lot of TIME within the film to create beauty, fear, tragedy, pathos, revulsion. I hope to see a lot more of these two. And kudos to them for taking part in a story about gays. Still takes courage.

Just binged watched the entire show! Amazing acting and layout of the events. We were not privy to the why it happened in 1997, but this story was riveting and I understand they put in scenarios and language of what "may" have happened. The story they told from his childhood to the end made complete sense on why he did what he did. The way his father treated him as a youth and put him on this unattainable pedestal, made him feel special, unique, he could do no wrong. Then in the end, he found his father was a liar, a thief, pushed him over the edge and he found out he wasn't really all that special after all. This is how narcissists are made folks. Very troubling.

This cast is UTTERLY brilliant. EVERYONE is brilliantly, perfectly cast.The ONLY issue I have is that Penelope Cruz is SO gorgeous, compared to Donatella, who is kind of bizarre and ugly looking. As a gay man who came out in the early 1990's, and was in college when Cunanan killed Versace, I was mortified, because I thought: "Great, now everyone is going to think we're ALL serial killers." It was a terrible thing because it meant that you had to be extra on guard regarding homophobia and possible backlash. Other than that, I have been RIVETED by this season of ACS thus far, can't wait, next episode TONIGHT!

This is what acting is about. It isn't about casting straight people into straight roles, or gay into gay roles. It is about casting the talent that can "service" the role as the director sees fit. Sometimes they are huge misses, sometimes, however, they are brilliant. In both of these cases, these actors showed a true connection with their characters. You forget who they are as you watch their performances. That is what we should focus on in film as an art.

I was fortunate to see the show and was intrigued by the non-linear structure that as a filmmaker not having access to the brilliant Ryan Murphy, I bought the book to try & understand the motivation. The book was very linear and I was disappointed not find info regarding the decision to do the story in such an unconventional manner. So I am very grateful for this informative interview with these two excellent actors especially Edgar's explaining how it came about, and additionally that each episode had its own theme. Bravo & thank you! Also, the adaptation of the book, the creation of the flesh-and-blood characters out of what is essentially a dry journalist reportage involving dozens of interviewed people, and creating dialogue to progress the story, complimented by the actors superb portrayals embodying them in such a visceral way, is totally amazing.

My stepbrother called me at work from Minneapolis in absolute distress as his best friend had been diagnosed w/HIV & this was 1990. So a bit confused about closeted gays. It was 1980 I went with a fellow floral designer to my first gay club in Nashville and couldn't believe all of the hot men. I think I with another female coworker were the only two women. Another 20 years earlier in 1977, Miami Beach was filled with elderly Jewish folks. I worked at The Fontainebleau in communications & didn't learn of some of the people the Novacks hid out until the 2000s docs "Square Grouper" "Cocaine Cowboys" and later learned of Mrs. Novack's murder and then their spoiled only son Benji's (who maybe 4 years younger was a rude little snot on the phone with me) murder & his sick obsessions. Sometimes you'd like to remain in innocence and not know you worked for the underbelly of the world. THAT houseboat was actually there in the 70s and don't know if it was actually still there when they filmed or built a set. When Cunanan was calling his dad, in the background you see these arches with round holes and they are still there on the facade of that building. There used to be several houseboats but there are none, just "yachts" moored across from The Fontainebleau and other hotels next door. I have to add that Darren's performance in the last episode moved my eyes to get misty knowing the father he grew up with, alleged sexual abuse, abandoning the family and hearing his friend Lizzie...something must have really affected Andrew so deeply to do what he did. Darren and Edgar certainly deserve Emmy awards.

Did you even watch the show? I felt bad for Andrew towards the end. He was intelligent, he was charismatic, and he just wanted to be great. Sure, he didn’t want to work for it, but he had the brain to get there with college or just by working for it. I get why the Versace family didn’t like the show- they humanized Andrew and they did it so well that I felt sad for that boy. His dad was abusive but praised and obsessed over Andrew and his mother mentally unwell and super passive. His dad essentially was the one who led him to believe that everything can be just handed to him.

@@sofiaguerrero0969, yeah, right... with a near Genius IQ level of 147. Unfortunately, he had mental health and drug abuse issues. Aside from his good looks and charisma, Andrew Cunanan truly was very articulate and well-read even when he was just a little boy. His friends/acquaintances and former classmates said that Andrew Cunanan really was highly intelligent, clever, witty, and fun to be with. Darren Criss mentioned before that there were people who approached him and told him how likeable, affable and loved Andrew was. They were the people who personally knew Andrew well. For them, there was no dull moment with Andrew, many of them loved him. And they claimed that they were heartbroken when the tragedy happened. It was indeed horrible and deplorable, yet until these days, they choose to remember just the memories of the loving, adorable and flamboyant Andrew they knew.

@zer0 I've read Orth's book, Vulgar Favors, an investigative journalism where that ACS series was based on. I get to understand the side of the victims, as well as the side of Andrew Cunanan who was suffering from mental health disorder that was even triggered by his drug abuse. Andrew was used by many of his friends/acquaintances who were "enablers." Many of them (including Jeff and David) used Andrew. There were San Diego friends who even said that Jeff owed Andrew several thousand dollars because, just like Andrew, Jeff was also addicted to expensive stuffs. If they really were true friends of Andrew, for old times' sake, they could have just supported him to change for the better, for an honest and healthy living. That's what friends are for. Many of them admitted that Andrew helped them a lot financially and morally/emotionally. He did care for them, even visited them when they were sick. Andrew helped them to not feel alone and miserable being closeted homosexuals. As long as Andrew could, he made them feel happy always. From Vulgar Favors: "The farewell dinner was a somewhat somber affair, as if Andrew were holding his own wake. Arthur Harrington, who, along with Higgins, brought a couple of bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne, claiming that if it hadn’t been for Andrew, no one at the table would have even gotten to know any of the others. “He was the glue that held us all together.” Eads recalls, “Two people made that comment. Andrew helped them not to feel alone.” If Andrew was a bad influence, then as a "real" friend, be a good influence to Andrew. At least, try to exert effort to be one. But instead, Jeff and David just turned their backs on Andrew particularly during the time when Andrew was (financially) hard up and depressed. They didn't even care and dare to talk to Andrew about it. They just took advantage of Andrew, they undeniably did benefit from being associated with Andrew at some point. Both Jeff and David even let Andrew feel that they didn't want Andrew around, they maybe even have said hurtful words to Andrew before the tragedy happened. However, it is still a sin to kill people. Andrew is still the culprit in this incident. In 1997, we just hoped that Andrew asked for forgiveness from God before he committed suicide.

I watched the movie for the 2nd time and it did bring the message to the table both times of how much hurt being in the closet 20 years ago must have torn at the hearts of so many people that just wanted to be treated equally and openly for the love they had for another human being weather they are gay or straight. Cunanan might have been hurting for that same reason but he wanted something for nothing. It appears he never wanted to work hard for what he took from people even at love and if he couldnt get handed things on a silver platter no longer? He took a tantrum and destroyed those persons and took from them anyways. He also didnt appear to be to much in the closet about being gay. He was only in the closet about using his sexuality to use older men for only money or what he could get out of them. He appeared to be nothing more than a lazy using Narcissist that could not feel happiness for others except himself and his jealousy of others was to the point of "If I cant have what you have weather its money or love?" Then no one will have you anymore. I felt bad and prayed for all the families when this happened but did not have an ounce of sympathy for Cunanan and still to this day I do not. Cunanan killed the 3 things he always wanted but couldnt have the real way in life. Love, money and fame. So he created it the wrong way.

@@cheesyDELISH48 oh yeah, I get that I too would have loved to have seen the result (I mean I was born in the uk a year after the spree so I wasn’t around, but acs has propelled me into the story of Cunanan and all his victims). But I really think if he were alive we’d just get lies after lies so he could stay relevant. I kinda imagine his interviews would be like Manson’s, less trying to scare the interviewer more trying to analyse and put on personas. I think he’d still carry on with his personas if he were alive.

I agree with Edgar Ramirez in the parallels between Versace and Cunanan. But I also appreciated the interview parallel between Versace and Jeff Trail. Versace was coming out to the world with Antonio, but Trail was in a seedy motel room bringing homophobia in the military to light while regretting helping his fellow comrade and putting himself back in the closet. Great show, especially revealing the struggles of the LGBT+ community.

I was fascinated by this case as a teen. I vividly remember the staircase scene of the crime on the street. And Gianni Versace was a famous famous designer at the time even to me, a kid in hs in a small town on Cape Cod MA. I didnt realize the case was failed due to homophobia or indifference but looking back, it was a different time for sure.
