In "Nappily Ever After" Violet Jones has a seemingly perfect life and a high-powered job, an eligible doctor boyfriend and a meticulously maintained, flawless coiffure. But after a life-changing event doesn't go according to her plan, and a hair-raising incident at the hairdresser, her life begins to unravel. Eventually, Violet realizes that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one she really wanted. Sanaa Lathan, Lynn Whitfield, director Haifaa Al-Mansour and producer Tracey Bing stopped by to discuss the powerful Netflix Original film.
BUILD is a live interview series like no other-a chance for fans to sit inches away from some of today’s biggest names in entertainment, tech, fashion and business as they share the stories behind their projects and passions. The young Vi & the pool scene took me back. I remember this happening to me.....with a different setting of course! I had just got my hair straightened & went to the pool with my cousins. I decided to jump in cause I wanted to have fun & honestly forgot all about my hair. When I realized I had ruined my hair.....my aunt made me feel as though my mom was gonna kill me so that was the longest ride home. Lucky for me, when my mom saw my hair.....she laughed & just rewashed & fixed it for church the next day. Because of that moment I've always been comfortable with doing anything to my hair.....because I knew it was JUST HAIR!

Some of the older generation do not like natural hair. My last relaxer was September 1999, and I started January 2000 with a small TWA. I had long hair but it was thin and wanted to get the hair I had as a child back, a black older coworker called me out one day and was Like”when are u going to perm your hair” It has been 18 years and I have cut several times, colored etc and still natural today. I love my hair and passing this love of your hair in its natural state on to my 14 year old daughter as well.

JasMarlena1 Yes, but there were many women during that time period that didn't have any love for the TWA back then either. I know because I lived back then and there were many Sistas that gave me grief for wearing a fro. Hey, to each their own. People should be allowed to make their own choices.

My mother-in-law's mother tried to make me feel so ugly for having natural hair. My natural hair is really thick & coarse......& I stand proud in who I am. Though she made me NEVER wanna visit her again....she did not sway me on my hair. I believe I'm beautiful however I wear my hair but my natural hair is me & I love it! 😝

WOW is ALL I can say. I am 47 years old and "had" ALWAYS been attached to my long hair. No more. I will cut my hair in a split second. I will shave my HUGE afro whenever I feel like it. As India Arie said I am not my hair. I'm not even "that" attractive but I am kind. And I look forward to showing that kindness, respect, compassion, empathy, and genuine love to others daily and for as long as I walk this earth. Therefore, I am beautiful. Look within.... that's REALLY what matters. ❤ I cannot wait to see this movie! Kudos!

The movie was cute. I did enjoy it. I have been proudly and happily wearing my hair in its natural state for over 9 years now.. and with that stated I had a lot of empathy for the character because I understand the ways we as black women have been conditioned to feel about our natural hair. I can see how this movie can be a great learning tool for many women who are still in that mental stage of not loving their natural hair. I am certain this movie will spring upon a few new twa... and with that I say to those women Welcome home sister! Black women are beautiful, our natural hair is beautiful. Embrace the process!

I have had perms, braids, weaves, natural, wigs etc. You know what? I am not my hair. I keep it a 1/8th inch. When I want more, I wear a wig. They are now finding out how many toxic chemicals are in black hair care products so natural/gray is it until the end. If I want hair, I will wear my wigs. Enough is enough. I loved this movie! Just think of all the suffering we have done to ourselves over trying to keep European standards.

I love my beautiful coils natural 10 years and when traveling I love wigs. Took 4 to Vegas and enjoyed every look. It was ...it IS fun! I love my Chaka Khan twist out. We are so bomb. It’s really awesome to hear the older generation embrace natural beauty and not down play it. I’ve been natural since 2009 and my mother and I went natural around the same time, however she struggles a great deal presenting herself wearing her natural hair, so wigs have become her best friend. If I wear mine out which is most of the time, or in a twist out my mom would say, “it should be well defined or it didn’t turnout right, and I’m like, but the frizzy texture is what I love!!🤦🏽‍♀️😳😂

Just saw the movie last night. It was awesome! The message was so beautiful. Me & my daughter are natural. I been natural since 2011. She is 11 & never had a relaxer. She absolutely loves her hair and I am happy that she does. My daughter goes to a school w/many other races & they are fascinated by her hair. Always asking to touch it & what not. I made sure I was an example of out of the box beauty for her to see on a regular basis. Sanaa & Lynn look flawless.

This is one of my favorite books. I wish that the world could see more natural hair promoted, like the Pantene Gold series.
