Native American Style Flute In The Key Of C4!
Hello again guys, This weeks video we will be making another Native American style flute but this time its going to be more of a bass flute!
The original video I made was in the key of G, This flute is is much larger and made in the key of C4! The reason I decided to make another flute is because I enjoyed making the last one soo much and I loved playing it because it just sounded really cool! But i always wanted to use the lower notes of the flute. So I figured why not just make another flute where all the notes are low! This project was just as much fun as the last to build and it sounds soo awesome!!
Items you will need for this build include 1 inch (25 mm) pvc pipe, 1 inch (25 mm) pvc coupling, a flat file, a key hole file set, a 1 inch (25mm) rubber plug, some electrical tape, and a 5/16 inch (8mm) drill bit.
Start by cutting your pipe down to 32 inches (81 cm). Next you will need to put a center mark on the pipe by using a scrap piece of plywood as shown in the video.
Now you will make a mark 1 7/8 inches (47 mm) from the top of the pipe and another mark at 3 1/2 inches (89 mm). You will use your flat file to file the space between the two marks down flat, as shown in the video.
Make a mark at 2 1/4 inches (57 mm) and at 3 inches (76mm) on the part you just filed down as shown in the video, this will be the two holes that make the noise. Now drill the two marks with a 3/16 inch (5mm) drill bit. Now use the top and bottom of the holes you drilled to mark out the squares need to make the noise holes as shown in the video. The holes will need to be 3/16 inches (5mm) by 3/8 inches (10mm). Use your key hole file set to finish making the holes.
Now you will need to file the back of the 2nd hole at a 45 degree angle as shown in the video using your key hole file set.
Now you will take the 1 inch (25mm) rubber stopper and cut it down to 1/2 inches (13mm) wide and wrap 3 layers of electrical tape around it to make it big enough to block off all the air flow. Next push it into the end of the pipe between the two holes you just filed out, as shown in the video.
Next you will need to file out the stopper in your 1 inch (25mm) coupling so that it is smooth on the inside. Then you will cut it down to 1 1/2 inches (38mm) long. Then you will take a saw and cut a line in it as shown in the video, so that you will be able to slide it over your pipe easily.
Now its time to tune your flute, You will do this by cutting off 1/8 inch (3mm) at a time until you hit the key you want to tune it to, in this case I am tuning it to C4. Once you have got it close you will need to finish it by using your flat file to file off the end a little at a time to fine tune it to the correct note.
Next you will need to go to www.flutopedia.com/naflutomat_... to find the finger hole placement you need. Its not that hard to navigate this web site but i show you how to do this in the video.
I used 5/16 inch (8mm) holes for the finger holes and here are the marks you will need to make to drill them properly.
6 1/2 inches (16.51 cm)
8 9/16 inches (21.74875 cm)
10 5/8 inches (26.9875 cm)
11 13/16 inches (30.00375 cm)
13 1/2 inches (34.29 cm)
14 3/4 inches (37.465 cm)
Once you have drilled out all your finger holes you are done, all you need to do is play around with it until you learn how to play it well!

Your directions were very easy to follow. I used thinner walled PVC but the same inner diameter. I realized that the thin wall might be a problem if I sanded it as much. So I ended up cutting a rectangular opening that included both holes and the space between. Then I inserted a 1/2 inch piece of 3/4 wide dowel wrapped in a couple layers of masking tape. With the birdy in place it worked perfectly! Hit G4 without sanding! I got lucky. Thank you for pointing me to the on line tuner. It was just what I had been looking for. I will finish the finger holes tomorrow. Let you know how it turns out.

Hey A.J. I really liked this video. I was reading the comments and saw one I disagreed with from William Hopper. It's in doing that we learn. So to make a comment about your flute and NOT tell you how to fix it makes me think he is more of an armchair quarterback, so to speak. The most important part is the sound hole followed by the slow air chamber. If the slot where the air passes from one chamber to the other is too big it will sound airy. So try this, take off the cover between the two holes. Replace it with a flat piece of wood that has a channel cut into it the depth of a credit card, .75 mm or 1mm, no deeper.Another thing you can do is round off the back of your rubber block on the slow air chamber.....why because air speeds up when it goes around a corner. If it didn't it would make a vacuum. Therefore taking less air to play also less airy sounding. Easy fix!! P.S. My hardest part of a flute is the holes for the fingers. Thanks for explaining the flutomat. You are a great teacher.

Very informative! Do u happen to know how I can make a flue in he key of A out of a 1" sch 40 pvc pipe? I can do the hole measurements but is there a designated length that has an effect on the pitch? Thanks in advance!

Keep in mind the higher the pitch the smaller diameter you will want to use. I suggest using 3/4 pvc instead and start with a piece maybe 20 inches or so. And be sure to go to the discription and click the link for the website to tune it correctly.

+Tusta Ji I don't own any metric drill bits myself so I dont have an exact reference to give you. If you look in the video description beside each imperial measurement I have put the metric equivillent. It may not be exactly related to a metric drill bit, but I dont own one so I dont know what all sizes are standard. However if you go to www.flutopedia.com/naflutomat.htm You can simply change the measurements from imperial to metric and then you can use the chart below to get the finger holes correct.

I'll be honest, I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to music. But I would assume if you tune your flute to c5 being the lowest note you should be able to play c3 and c4. But I'm not 100% sure about that.

Fashion a piece of dowel to be inserted into the mouth end and shape it to taste. All you need is a file and some patience to make the fit. Drill out the airway before you glue it in so no debris winds up in the SAC.

Well don't guarantee that exact length will work out. You just need to be patient and do a very little bit at a time. Once you go too far you can't fix it. But if you go really slow you will eventually get to the right tone.

My ending length was 26 inches total, but it may vary depending on hole placement. I suggest starting with 30 inches or longer and slowly cut it off until you reach the desired pitch as shown in the video 4:50

I've played mine a lot actually, the only one that's hard to reach is the very bottom one for me. I have a harder time keeping the air flow because it takes so much more air than the smaller version. This was a requested video, it didnt work as well as I had hoped. I made a flute in the past and kept getting people asking to make a bass flute so I did, I went a little too low is the problem if you couldnt tell being in the key of c4, it requires a lot of air to play it properly, and ive learned how to play it better since making the video.
