14-13mm for diameter of dowel for the whistle, and For anyone else wondering the mouthpiece at the top I think must be flush with the top of the whistle and then finish where the wooden dowel ends. While tuning, how do you get the higher octaves in tune with the low octave while not changing the low octave? Do you enlarge the holes in a certain way? I have made a wooden whistle but the low and high octaves are out of sync with each other and I don't know how to fix it. Thanks a lot! I will give this tutorial a try. Also do you have plans for a low F or F whistle?
@lukehebert62073 жыл бұрын
I run into this problem with flutes made from wood or bamboo, but rarely with PVC flutes. I don't know if it's the more consistent bore shape or what, but very frustrating!
@lavellrobinson46572 жыл бұрын
I've read somewhere that making the hole bigger while tuning will do more to the low octave but moving it up or away from the end will do more for the higher octave
@AlexeyKulentsov Жыл бұрын
For an already carved whistle, you can try the same way as it is done in recorders: octave key. Try Hans Bracker's whistle and flute hole calculator. In this case, you will have additional fingering for clean C.

You can calculate the hole spacing, but like the length of the whistle, it will take some adjustments (a.k.a. 'voicing'.) This is due to a lot of differing factors. Interior diameter, wall thickness, how rounded or square the edges of the holes are, the diameter of the holes (start too small, then enlarge), the stiffness of the body material and so on. If hogwarts had a class in whistle making, it would be considered a Dark Art. The good news is that with some trial and error, and patience, you can get a decent sounding instrument without having 20 years experience making them.
@alvarozaira3 жыл бұрын

Hello I am so excited to start making these types of instruments. A whole new world... Very interesting. I am struggling to find 16mm diameter pipes and dowels in the UK. Would it matter very much if it was 15mm, I would need to make the flute longer and the spacing of the holes would be different? And should the dowel match the internal diameter of the pvc pipe or the outer diameter
@NicolasBras3 жыл бұрын
The dowel has to fit into the pipe, so inner diameter, you can adapt this instrument to every length, make some tries!

Question... I have a wood lathe and I was looking at possibly making something like this out of wood. What do you think would be the sound quality with a wooden flute vs. a pvc flute? I have access to softer woods like oak and ash, but also some harder woods like gaboon ebony and African blackwood (which I know is used in some wooden clarinets as the bell). Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
@NicolasBras4 жыл бұрын
I Never worked with wood, no idea!

Oak and ash aren't good enough to work on a lathe I believe. I'm building my first flute out of checker tree. Of course ebony /blackwood would work fine but those are precious woods for a first try aren't they?
@houtje242 жыл бұрын
I have difficulty in closing the holes because of callus. Is the idea of using O rings around the holes silly? if you make rim in the holes en glue the O rings in maybe that works.
