The means to do the job have a massive cost. And the collaborations between construction companies in Switzerland on large projects are common for several reasons. 1. The client does like to spread the risk, in the case of a consortium (which is the case here), if one company fails, the project has to continue. 2. For the companies themselves, there are several reasons: - Not being specialised in all the fields required to do the job. - There is a part of such projects (especially the first contract) where there is an unknown on the financial result, so not betting too much on it makes sense. - Having other contracts, and not a million of qualified workers and foremen on hand, it's safer to work with other companies that would supply some workers than hiring new people whose qualifications are unknown. - Those companies have commitments with other clients. - This is night work. The workers within one company usually rotate so they don't have to always have the night shift. Easier if not a big proportion of the local workers are committed on one project. And if the workers work on these projects all the time, there can be loss of motivations. And in general, we are happy to collaborate whenever it makes sense. Healthy collaboration is more constructive and provides better value to the client than destructive competition.

No it's not. It's standard qualified workers doing their jobs. This is not the USA... This is Switzerland. Workers in construction in Switzerland are qualified workers, and not DYIers ++... The salaries are decent, but there is no difference between them and other workers within the company. There are variations but they are not massive. All workers in that field within the company would be able to do that. And one of the reason one of the 2 companies on site is being used is that they have amazing machines, but mostly, they have their concrete recycling plant, and concrete production plant at the end of the runway, making their cost unbeatable. And they have the collaboration with Concretum, the special cement that originates from the Swiss Technical Instritute of Technology of Zurich.

Stop with your American fixation on "work pride", "Murica"... It's Switzerland. It's a job like another. And we provide quality to our clients who pay the price for it. This is not about absurd unhealthy pride and bravery, and heroism, and all those ridiculous superlatives for normal stuff. And unlike the US, Switzerland respects more its workers. There is a proper organisation, proper companies, with proper safety, proper benefits, etc... The management, with the foreman, with the return on experience of the whole crew of workers organises the events. We are professionals, we act as such. It's not the crazy noisy Americans shouting on site that a rookie fucked up when the manager just dropped them on a random site with 0 instruction. We have proper education for these workers ! It's a 4 years apprenticeship with high standard theoretical and practical courses, and 3.5 days a week within the company. This system was implemented by the government. The diplomas are highly regarded. The mentality is different. And here, we have proper engineering. We don't have unqualified drama presidents. We have unknown politicians elected for the competences. Don't apply your American mentality to other cultures.

I'd say the coolest part of the job is testing brand new equipment. It shows up with plastic on the seat and etc less than 10 hours, and my job is to figure out how to operate it so that I can show everyone else. Coolest thing I did recently was function test a brand new fully electric Takeuchi mini ex. It was brand new, and fully charged but it kept showing a code for a battery issue. After lots of testing and seeing everything was fine we just called Takeuchi - turns out with these electric excavators you need to drain the battery down to less than 5%, then recharge...

It's a special concrete- The cement is supplied by Concretum, a Zurich stratup that developed it specifically for this kind of application. 2 hours 30 minutes after mixed, it has a resistance of 20 MPa or 50 MPa depending on the formulation. It can be worked for 90 minutes (the plant of Eberhard is at the end of one of the runways of the airport). It is not lower quality, it's a specific chemical formulation, with a similar durability. And for the paving, they use a low temperature rapid-curing asphalt. Again, the formulation is specific for those needs, more expensive of course.
@fabr5747Ай бұрын
Let me be specific. Eberhard did renovate a runway with concrete. Here, they decided to go with asphalt. Why? It's the shortest runway. I believe that no heavy aircraft uses it (unless an emergency situation requires it). But also, technology improved massively in pavement.

@@Smokeygigieee where I live they built a bridge and ripped down the old one and I was told if they didnt finish on time it was one million per day fine for each day they was over. The only reason I believe it was it was a pretty decent sized bridge going over a on ramp to a highway. They built the bridge on the ground and used a new machine that can raise it up and lower it and drive it into place. It was cool to watch them do it when I would drive past there every morning for work.

Runways costs an average, 400-600 million euros. The newly built runway in Dublin was constructed at a cost of about 350 million.

Hey Aaron...... Would you like to shoot a video about installing, sanding, and painting gymnasium floors? We would love to host your show!!
@waynep3432 жыл бұрын
Roller skating rink floors in the early 80s. 16 grit sanding discs glued to the bottom of out boots. Poured it out of 5 gallon buckets and pushed it around with squeegees till it was smooth. The coating did have finely ground glass mixed in for traction with the skate wheels so the coating was slightly opaque. Only had one guy fall down in it. Probably way different today.

@@TheWowthatsick you would be suprised how much goes into a gym floor hell rubber flooring for a gym HAS to be done in ONE CONTINUS pour and the use five gallon buckets. trust me flooring a gym is no carpeting a house

If only we had this in Florida. This just shows it can be done. Don't take years to build.

It seems it's the construction site for which I was doing electro magnetic probing for explosive ordnance back in 2019. Took quite a long time. Walked thousands of m² per night. Was a great job!

The rest of the airport runway looks like it is concrete. Why are they paving this with asphalt?
@fabr5747Ай бұрын
Cost benefit calculation. They remove the concrete section by section, replace it with asphalt. This runway sees much lighter traffic (shortest runway).

What you see here is what we call "ARGE" which is short for "Arbeitsgemeinschaft". It's a Way of doing huge or immensely complicated Projects faster and more efficient, by temporarely "joining" Parts of several Companies together for that one Project. Here we see Eberhardt, Walo, Marti and Implenia, which are 4 of the really big ones in the swiss Buildingindustry plus probably some smaller ones lending Machines and Staff or Specialists of a particular Field working together as if they were one and the same Company. Those ARGE-Projects are most often lead by a complicated Mix of several Ingenieurs of different Fields, Representers of the Airport in that Case, Representers of the Companies and many more...
