Our final leg of the Canadian Tour found us in Alberta on a visit with Finning Cat! (They're one of the biggest Caterpillar Dealerships in the world with locations in multiple continents)
We were there to visit their Fort McKay facility where they build and rebuild 797 haul trucks. (it takes 12 weeks to reassemble a unit after it has been stripped for a rebuild).
FUN FACT: These trucks are typically run 5000 to 6000 hours per year, and are rebuilt every 12-15 years. #heavyequipment #caterpillar #construction
Equipment: Caterpillar 797B Haul Truck, Caterpillar 797F Haul Truck, Caterpillar 262 Skid Steer Loader, Caterpillar 798AC Mining Truck, Swamp Donkey Dozer

Nice! I work on 793s, we had 797s at one point but the tires were disproportionately expensive and much of our infrastructure was too small to support the 97s. The dispatch system is usually a 2.4GHz mesh network and passes truck location, shovel assignments, and dump assignments. When it works, it's more efficient than voice radio communication. We also have full telemetry on all trucks so maintenance can pull up diagnostic information in near real-time on running trucks.

Had the privilege of building the prototype and regular production engines for these trucks when they first came out. Tandem 3512’s crank to crank. What a trip! They now use C175’s. I just retired from building the 3500 family of engines for 30 years in Lafayette IN. It’s an incredible product and these big machines are impressive to say the least!

Great video I’m glad you got in the shop, after the last video up here I seen shots of finning and thought you might have missed out. Of all the trucks to show when saying they do a 12 week rebuild it’s the one that’s been in the shop for 5 months.

So funny enough for this year, heavy metal has bought every 797 haul truck finning will build this year. They can’t get enough technicians to help build them. I work for the hitachi vendor in Alberta and we’ve done in our shop, a dozen units just for heavy metal for up north and I think we’re expecting more units to get built. 490s, 690s and 890s

I enjoyed watching your video of a 797 work in process. I actually work in the Decatur, IL plant where the 797 is built and 5 1/2 years ago I worked on the 797 line. After the test booth I helped to break them down to get it ready for shipping. Largest truck means large parts and large tools. It was a tough job!

@@kingduck3192 they take a long time because they are huge. The frame alone takes weeks to fabricate. All the old cats you see everywhere are still running because they are quality made and they are pretty “simple” in the terms of they are just made to run and do their jobs, not any un needed crap added like a lot of unreliable cars these days.

Absolutely love the style of these Vlogs. Brilliant filming, editing and sound production produce a great quality overall. I appreciated things like the sound note when the Finning CAT logo clunked onto the center of the screen, and the perfect level adjustment of the background music between Aaron's voice parts - not only does the level fade or rise to the sweet spot, it feels like the music is at the right point in its own track to make that moment the best it can be. Love the excitement and passion that shows through!
