My Mother had a 4 door, bought it new in 1960. It was suggested at the time to place 50lbs. in the trunk to solve the handling issues. Which she did. A 50lb. piece of steel plate. I learned to drive in that thing. Thanks. This brought back some fond memories.

I had a 64 short version convertable Corvair when I was stationed in Hawaii at Schofield Barracks on Ohau. I paid an officer $250.00 and if there was ever a place for a convertable it was in Hawaii. My Corvair didn't have a heater in it. I wound up trading it for some really nice stereo equipment when I got out of the Army. 25th Infantry. When I got back I had a friend who had a 66 Corvair Spyder that was turbo charged and we topped it out at 130mph.

My dad owned a first-gen corvair, then a '65 convertible. It was one of the first cars I ever drove. The things I remember are the horrible cable shift linkage, that made reverse almost impossible to engage, and the play in the large steering wheel. But, at that time, I had little experience driving, so I didn't know what to compare it to. Ours (the '65) was a Monza. It was a reliable car, and my dad loved driving it. It was not the deathtrap that Ralph Nader made it out to be. I don't think Nader made nearly as big a stink over the 911, which was probably more dangerous. I still like the clean, lines of the second-gen coupe. It's a good-looking car.

@@V67Snick Plus, beginning in 1965 Corvair got trailing-arm rear suspension, similar to the Corvette. Prior to that it was swing axle, similar to early VW beetles. The 1964 was a transition year, still swing axle but a transverse spring to limit its bad movement. FWIW I had a 1966 Corsa and it was great on a winding road.

At :19. Am I the only one who thinks that Corvair heavily influenced the look of the '66 Chevelle?
@rarecarstorys
@rarecarstorys Ай бұрын
perhaps, While both cars were produced by Chevrolet, their design philosophies were quite different. The Corvair was a radical departure from American car design norms, while the Chevelle adhered to more traditional styling cues. The Corvair's influence was more pronounced in European and Japanese car designs of the 1960s rather than on other American cars, including the Chevelle, corvair does have duel headlight , which is similar
@dennis1954
@dennis1954 Ай бұрын
The only resemblance I see or remember is maybe from the rear view. When the grill vs no grill was factored in the Corvair lost, looking bland and stubby. The Chevelle had better lines overall. At a streetlight, and sitting in my 66 Corvair, it seemed smaller and lower to the ground than a Chevelle, especially if the rearend was raised and had wide tires. Then the Corvair was more a “toy” or foreign car.

The answer to your question about if Chevrolet had continued the Corvair Racing Line with Don Yenko's design, is an obvious 'No,' because Chevrolet was SO OVERPROTECTIVE OF THE CORVETTE- FIRST & ONLY AMERICAN SPORTS CAR, that, when Ford, and later, Pontiac, designed their own 2 Seat, Big Engine, Racing Inspired, cars, - Chevrolet, - through parent company, General Motors, basically underminded any Ford vehicle that appeared in the Corvettes style, engine size after conversion from cubic inches to the european method of measuring an engine's mass-displacement of water, while not running, or even installed within the vehi

Corvairs are cool. Yenko Corvairs are more cool. I was present, as an official, when Don Yenko brought his Corvair to Riverside Raceway for the SCCA National Championships. He was racing in D/Production class. 2 classes down from a Shelby GT350, Shelby Cobra 289 and Shelby Tiger. The Corvair was competing against Healeys and Triumphs. NOT Shelbys. And wasn't close to the front of THAT class. Which was, IIRC, won by Don Devendorf in a Triumph. Not only not even CLOSE to any Shelby, not very close to a Triumph. It's a little late for marketing statements for a car that hasn't been produced in nearly 60 years. Are you trying to sell a restored Yenko Corvair?

Blew the lead, the Stinger had nothing to do with the Shelby in racing. The GT 350 Shelby was in B production with small block Corvettes, the Yenko Stinger was in D production with the Porsche 911S. That should have been a terrible mismatch, but in 1967 a Yenko Stinger managed to secure the SCCA D production championship over the Porsche 911s.

I remember seeing a whole family stuffed in one of those cars. That thing flipped over like a paper airplane and land on its roof like a brick. They came crawling out the windows, screaming, and limping. All they did was hit a tiny hump in the road at low speed and that car was totaled.

Wow, that sounds like quite an experience! It’s amazing how something so minor can lead to such dramatic results. Hope everyone was okay after that incident!
@playerpage

Yeah, that didn't happen. Corvairs were actually less inclined to flip than most other cars in their day. They are extremely low to the ground. Read the 1972 NHTSA report on them.

I've heard lots of stories about Corvairs spinning, usually with the 60-63 swing axles at the rear. Not one before this, about "flipped". A tiny road hump would not be capable of doing such a thing... don't doubt you saw *something*, but this was surely a most unique way to wreck.

The Camaro came out in the 1967 model year. A GT350 in good tune would beat Corvairs. Any Corvair is also way behind a 911.

Actually, the 911 is behind the Corvair. The Corvair had a flat six first. It was the Corvair engine that Porsche studied to build their own six cylinder design.

@playerpage Wrong. Porsche copied VW flat engine. VWs were 1st produced in the 1930s.

@@erwinpadgett1050 Porsche copied the design of the Chevrolet Corvair *flat six* engine. Porsche hadn't figured out six cylinders yet in the 1950's (when the Corvair was in development), but when GM borrowed Porsche's car bodies and test track to test the Corvair engine, Porsche got to take a look at what they were up to. They learned the secret to six cylinders, and yes, made some improvements.

You're full of s...! Nothing GM ever did could destroy the Mustang! Proof is its still being built. Don Hence was a great man who built high powered muscle cars in his small dealership. He became one of the icons of the muscle car era. A great man. His legacy is in all the true Hence checks still in existance. His tragic death ended the Hence empire. So sad. If he had lived he'd be involved in the resurgence of today's muscle cars. Stop trying to exploit his legacy with your BS storues!!!!!!
