I am 64 and hadn't any familiarity with the band until a year ago when I heard this recording. I have spent the last year looking up everything I could find. They are truly extraordinary and as good if not better then some of the great groups of my generation. It's kind of sad that they aren't held in higher regard and don't have more recognition.

It’s awesome that you recognize their (Doug’s) brilliance. I started listening to them around 2002 thanks to my roomate in college. Been a die hard fan since the first listen. Seen them about 7 or 8 times . Every show was as good as the studio recordings sounded. However, with the new 3 piece lineup change this year, the performance sounds “thin” from what I’ve seen on KZbin. Going to see them in September this year anyway. But I really hope Doug adds 1 or 2 supporting guitarists to fill out the layers for future tours. If you haven’t seen them, definitely go and enjoy the show. If you ever get to see them as a full 5 piece, your mind will be absolutely blown. Cheers!

You're correct that BtS is overlooked, underestimated, etc. Always have been. The listener has to be flexible, the vocals are never really expressive or in a hurry. There's not a lot of simple "hooks" for the average listener. And most listeners treat music superficially if they consider it at all -- they want pleasant noise for the background. With these factors in play, a band like BtS will always dwell on the fringes. A band influenced by BtS, but which was more eager to make money and therefore made their music more Average Listener Friendly, is Modest Mouse. Not surprisingly, they became uninteresting to me around the same time they courted fame. Their songs became something written for children or teenagers, and for Soccer Moms to sing along to while driving their expensive pavement-restricted SUV. The average listener likes average (if not worse) music.

What Doug says around the 20:00 mark is hilarious Doug is asking the venue staff how much time they have left to play, since that would factor in to their decision of what to play next. After a short exchange with the venue staff, the band concludes that there is 'plenty of time' left for them to play their set. . . Doug casually announces to the crowd they have 'one more' . . . They start into a beautiful 17 min version of Broken Chairs.

Love Built To Spill. Doug's so mellow and unassuming, doesn't seem to have an ego at all. I've seen these guys play 20 times, they never disappoint. (Except one show in DC where Doug was getting shocked by the mic and was afraid to sing. Not really his fault.) In all those concerts... I've never heard Doug say more than a few words on stage, it's always "Thanks" or "Thanks a lot" after each song. Sometimes I wish he had a little more banter on stage, I'd like to know more about him, hear a story every now and then. Maybe he's not comfortable chatting on stage, or perhaps he just wants to get on to the music and entertain us.
@donparkison46176 жыл бұрын
He is just a nice quiet person. We saw him in a very small club a few years ago and he was just chilling in front of the stage watching the opening band. My wife and I talked to him for a few minutes. Very nice and polite, but I wouldn't call him chatty.

Most Idahoans in the 20th Century apart from Sun Valley/Hailey, and in the 21st Century apart from those towns & Boise, are unassuming people. Those exceptions listed are towns which are mostly un-Idahoan now, thanks to yuppie transplants lording their wealth and demands over the local govts and changing those towns to something more like greater Los Angeles, or Aspen.
