I've always sprayed my cars, but I know a couple who also flip cars and they do their own body work and have maaco spray it. Their first experience was the only bad one, and they made right, and in the end, and got two repeat customers. Only look at location specific customer reviews and not national reviews. Especially for body work.

Always love to see your videos pop up. I’m hoping in the next few years to be able to find a space of my own to really take on larger projects than rusty quarter panels and dented fenders.

I just ran across this video/your channel. I found it incredibly interesting.....caught my attention as im on 2nd RR as my daily drive (200 commute each way). I have never had that gen, but at this point in life wont drive anything other. My first was a 2010 (L322), im currently in a 2020 (L405) LWB 5.0 supercharged. Driveing long distance (40 city miles, the rest expressway). In a 200k range I had 4 repairs on the L322, other than software updates (frequent) ive not had a repair on teh L405. MY key to longevity is im freaky exact and thorough maintenance ONLY at the agency. I think thats the key to avoiding problems although the standard maintenance is freaky- expensive. Ive sub/watched a few of your vids).....I absolutely love your personality/approach and the way you work w/ your daughter! You are incredibly talented (adapting headlights, which is incomprehensible to me. However I plan on watching/following your projects. As for you RR, I avoided those back in the day, but yours is so iconic. you should get a major piece of coin for that one, enthusiasts are incredibly loyal. I also appreciated your concept of "never taking on something like this again" but as you said a brain drain does develop character......that you will always carry/build upon. kudos to you!

The one in my location has painters that can lay down paint really good. Here’s my advice, get your body as straight as possible and ready for the finish paint job. Just have them mask then lay down the paint. If you talk to the lead guy and specifically state you’re willing to pay more to have his best painter shoot it they can accommodate it. The extra 1k bucks on top of 1-1500 is definitely worth it if you think about it. Their facility, power, equipment and you’re getting a person that does it on a constant basis. I supplied my own paint and for 2200 bucks (quoted 1200) he did have his best guy hit it and it was awesome. Hardly any trash in the paint and after a cut/buff it looked like a 8k+ paint job. Granted my car was really straight to begin with but still had to have some work done before. Best of luck you guys! Just swing into their lot and look at cars waiting to get picked up. You’re going to get a good look at the particular shops quality

@@coldchickenwings9437 Painting is not the least hard thing. Yeah, $1000 for a blow up paint booth, $1000 for a compressor up to the task of running a spray gun for an entire car, $500 for an air dryer and desiccant system, $150 for a decent gun, $2-300 for fans that can pull a good enough draft through air filters in said booth, not to mention to cost of paint, clear coat, catalyzers, and proper storage. @@wickedkustumz well, you seem to know what your talking about. I have most of that because I like to restore old vehicles. If you paid for bodywork, it's not acceptable. I learned my lesson with MAACO: when they do the estimate, make sure you point out EVERY SINGLE DING AND DENT that you want repaired, and make sure they circle each one on the vehicle itself with their yellow marking crayon AND have written it down on the estimate - "dimple in left rear quarter panel," "dent in right front door," etc etc.

Maaco is fine as long as you do the body work and prep yourself. Lessons for anyone that goes to maaco or any autobody shop. Don't accept your vehicle if its freshly washed. Its amazing how much water on a car can hide. And before you get the job done take pictures of all the dents and areas you'd like repaired. And have everything written down. My amateur autobody friend painted a 64 beetle in a plastic sheet paint booth and used expensive Glasurit single stage .It came out amazing. So much so I VW dealer bought it for $30k and it sat on the showroom floor for over ten years until they sold it and the paint was still looking good. So my point is don't be afraid to buy your own equipment and learn to spray it yourself. You did make a good point to do a thorough inspection before leaving. I always bring a friend as a second set of eyes and opinion when I'm buying a vehicle. When your excited about buying something you're not always in the right frame of mind .This same principle should apply to picking up a vehicle from any paint shop. You don't grow if you don't learn.

If you paid for body work, the obvious stuff should have been fixed 100% Not so much the wavy stuff though. Shouldn’t have runs in the paint either. I feel like they could have put in not much more effort and you would have been pretty happy at that price point. Having said all that if they don’t take care of you, hit up Eric and we’ll cut and buff the runs out and fix that one really obvious dent on the quarter. If you want to try to PDR it first Bill Gewalt is the MAN, and local, usually will come to you. I can definitely relate to the “wasnt fun but I’m proud of it” statement lol. Amazon sells a self adhesive 11mm chrome strip kit for about $15. That is the correct size to put back on the side strips. Also, you can use polishing compound to take off the oxidized layer of rubber and put a couple heavy coats of any type of dino oil then let the strips sit over night. Wipe off the excess residue and they will look like new. Thats how I restored the ones on my RRC. Now they look like I just took them out of a wrapper. Oh...the headlights are standard 7" Jeep headlights....LED units are dirt cheap and will throw a bunch of light compared the the originals. Make sure you get the H4-H13 adapters with them and it will be plug and play.

I used to do body work/paint for many years. Maaco is known for quick paint jobs. they are not restoration experts. In todays world it would cost you at least 1000.00 for the paint product alone. You can't expect everything to be done (total bodywork and paint) for such a low price. Another tip do not pick up your finished vehicle when it's raining. It is hard to examine. It looks like a decent job for a good price.

Not being in you country, it's a little hard to know what the average paint and bodywork job costs from other panelbeaters as to value for money side of things. Through KZbin channels though, I have gotten the picture that Maaco is sort of a hit-and-miss result kind of place - sometimes it works well, other times not so much, so I get that its not a high-end, bespoke shop that you'd send a priceless Lamborghini to. In saying that, there is a rule in any western country that if you have PAID for something, you should get it.....and given that the rather expensive two-stage paintwork was less than half the cost of the final bill, something doesn't add up. The rippling effect can be caused by two things (usually) - a) overheating of the panel by sanding too heavily in one area or b) bad technique when skimming the bodyfiller and / or primer layers during prep. In an industry that has learned and changed much in the last 40 years and now has a lot of options during prep to hide places containing heavier amounts of filler - and where guide coats are routinely used to show up high and low spots in the prep - that crap level of finish is no longer acceptable. Similarly, the high and low spots (ie: dents from external or internal sources) in the panel work SHOULD have been taken care of as part of the "bodywork" component of the labour cost. In every job, a prior walkaround and agreement on what is taken care of is usually done if there are any questions about what the bodywork labour component will cover. The runs in the paintwork (and I'll put money on the fact there will be more) are again unacceptable as a "finished and ready for the customer" result. Yes the customer may be able to tidy them up if they know how, but it would be MY expectation as a paying client that they do not exist to begin with. In a recent repair from a panelbeater for my wife's car after being in a minor shunt from behind, the bodywork and prep was good but it was like they had painted it next to the bloke sandblasting the next job. There was so much crap sitting in the paint - and being a silver car, it looked like we had reversed at speed into a huge swarm of mosquitoes. I told them I was not accepting it and it had to be redone. What came back was so perfect that - as well as thanking them personally and acknowledging how great it looked - I gave them a rave review on their social media and website pages, although I did mention that they didn't get it right first time. If you do not complain, you do not get an opportunity for a change in the result you've been given and the company does not get a chance to right the wrong or put steps in place to stop it happening again (if they care at all about repeat business, customer service and their name / reputation in general). If you complain and they basically tell you to shove it where the sun don't shine, well, social media is a pretty good platform for getting the word out, isn't it? Or...at least you know where not to take a vehicle next time if you want it to look good and get what you pay for. The lesson I think is to convey or manage expectation and always make sure you know what work will be done for the money you will be handing over BEFORE they start the job by walking around the car and either noting or marking areas to be addressed. If you did this, then you have grounds to go back and demand either a full refund or that they correct the work - whichever suits best. Also if you did not ask them to remove the side mouldings, then they should NOT have removed the side mouldings and any damage cause by said removal is on THEIR time and dime to repair, not yours. In saying all that, I think the vehicle looks great from a distance, will be awesome inside once completed and was worth the paint job to make it look better.

What does a paint job usually cost in the US? I feel like $2900 would be usual price. You can get a sketchy closed door respray in Australia for around $2500 and things are generally twice the price over here.

Mako has always done a decent job as long as you find the ones that do a good job they're usually independently owned franchise style and I always find who is going to do the bodywork on my car usually it's a grunt I always talk to him and flipping at least a 20 or a 50 extra in cash to do a little better job than he normally would and I can get a $600 job look like a $1,500 one pay the lowest guy on the totem pole because he's the one that does most the prep work and the lowest amount of money it does the biggest amount of improvement because he is the least paid

3k is a very cheap overall. The material cost alone at a “real” body shop would be a significant part of that alone, even at cost. Im fairly certain Maacao is a mask and spray place, the “body work” you paid for is probably mostly for the labor time for the “r&i’s” of all the parts taken off, not necessarily to swipe and block every panel on the vehicle. I work at a dealership body shop, unless your doing it yourself your paying 2-3 times that but it would look good.

The first response is right. I would take it back to macco and dispute the finish. The paint and the body repair is good but could've been better for: $3000.00, their is always a few collision places that could do outstanding work for the same price as macco. It's just a matter of finding those gems that believe in their work. These are the same places that break down on paper whatever they'll charge you for. I'm thankful for your video (thumbs down only because macco use to be better) the way they painted your vehicle it may encourage rust sooner than before your paint job. Hopefully they did the prep work properly before the paint job. Hope for the best for you and Land Rover.

Idk I brought a few cars in there to get them painted and what I’ve learned Atleast for the stores here is the reason they get such a bad reputation is because they do cheap paint single stage jobs when a lot of people won’t. Then people get upset that their cheap paint dosnt last. It’s like paying a tire store to put on dry rot tires. But if you spend more like I have they do great work. But that’s the store where I live. Every stores different with different people and different standards.

It was better when it was "1 day auto" before Maaco bought them. I had Maaco do one of my cars , i got the same as you with the top paint job and good UV protection andddd the UV protection is just not good. Dont care if its in your garage but it tore through it. I wet sanded the car myself ( i used to own detail shop yearssss ago) since they half a$$ it leaving anywhere from a 1/2 to 1 inch around all body lines and edges. The same location when it was 1 day paint and auto actually did a better job, i asked for extra coats of paint and to this day, the UV coat is still solid. I wet sanded that car and it was like glass. Everyone thought it was a $5k paint job or more. $2900 dollars and they didn't do body work , take it back. Also, the paint always looks thin. It doesn't look thick.. I would take it back. If you paid for the dents and bodywork and they didn't do it and its on your order / receipt, take it back.

Anytime you have paint and or bodywork done, never accept it on anything but a sunny day. If that’s not possible request an inspection indoors and that the vehicle is dry. Look from multiple angles and distances. Use reflections to check for straightness. And always take your time.

Damn i had a car painted by maaco back in 2012. I paid $2k for their top of the line paint with some body work. It turned out great except i opted to paint the door jams. They didn't mask off the door jam stickers very well so theres a ton of overspray on them. Oh well. Now in 2024 the car looks 80% as good as it did when it was first painted. Paint looks pretty great but I would call them and speak to the manager. It doesn’t look like they did any bodywork. Personally I would want to bring it back and have them do what you paid for rather than getting a refund. A good PDR tech can take care of a lot of that stuff but that one sharp ding on the left quarter panel might be tricky.

Any shop will unfortunately be different from one place to another. My local Abra has a painter that got tired of running his own business and just wanted to work 9-5. AND all he does is paint. No body work, not even mix his own paint... But lays down amazing paint for the price. Go down the road 60 miles to the other Abra... Garbage.... All about the manager and employees. The prep work was terrible and no body work was done from my experience suing Earl Shibes, Macco and Abra. You can see some sand marks and a bit of wavy in body filler as they don't block sand etc. and it's what the "kids" do there for $10 hr.
