Tips for the scroll saw: replace the bouncy insert with something rigid, increase the speed, and check out all the different blade choices there are. Scroll saws are cool because with the right blades, you can cut holes in things with no exit. Just take the blade off, run it through a pre-drilled hole, and re-attach the blade.
@jazzwhiskey582
@jazzwhiskey582 Ай бұрын
yeah, blade choice is key. Many blades available. You can cut details with a jigsaw that are sketchy on a bandsaw. I use it for cutting the plexiglass/polycarbonate, less scary for your fingers. I have been watching your channel since before you talked in em 😆. So, I remember the video where the old finger kissed the bandsaw blade!
@markjames3861
@markjames3861 Ай бұрын
It may simply be the blade is upside down and is cutting on the up stroke. That would explain the workpiece wanting to lift.

I agree a rigid insert ideally with a slit the size of the blade

Your debate to cut down the bulbous tail from square to rounded gave me an idea to challenge your skills: Carve a bait that you could make a mold, carve and modify it to make another mold and then once more. Like 3 soft plastics from one chunk of wood.
@dustinmiller2969
@dustinmiller2969 Ай бұрын
Are you thinking that it'd be interesting to carve the master and then rather than retire it, craft interchangeable features to snap in and out of the body for variations in the molds? Ya know... like, to have the control vs variants for testing purposes? Because if you just put that idea in my head, i'd have to agree that it'd be a really interesting video. I love these videos, Nathan! 🤘 The two best teachers i've ever known are nature and failure, but after watching for years, i've learned a lot from you as well. I've taken notes on plenty of things from underwater physics and bouyancy to carving technique and wood working tools to soft plastics and plug in the lead pot to name a few.
@rgdayo
@rgdayo 27 күн бұрын
@@dustinmiller2969 I was thinking of it like a Russian Nesting Doll of sorts. Start with a large carving and produce a mold before witling to something smaller and repeating the process. But I like your idea to build something modular! That'd be very fun to see. And yes, always plug in the lead pot! :D

Scroll saws have a learning curve. Learning blade speed and blade type for the type/grain wood you are using. I used a scroll to make my baits 20-30 years ago. Don't give up on the saw, but perhaps replace the cut ring with a metal one. Your baits rock Brother!!!!!

I have used a scroll saw to cut a couple hundred lures, but have had opportunity to used a band saw on only a couple. Hands down!, the band sand is the much quicker and easier tool to use. Scroll saws are great for thin material when you need to cut precise detail, but not so much with 3/4 and 1 inch stock. I feel your pain!

i own both a scrollsaw and bandsaw, the key with scrollsaws in to never use blanks where your fingers are cramped or bunched up to hold onto it.. the piece will just rock on the table due to not enough surface area.. As soon as you use larger blanks the rocking will reduce considerably to where its a minor inconvenience sometimes.. And also put the pressure plate/safety guard down on the piece until its dragging across it with some friction.. the beauty of the scrollsaw is being able to make intricate cuts without always having to back out the blade and cut in again.. you can do something like your baits in pretty much one constant movement.. Also yeah your plastic deck plate is garbage, copy it and make one out of something like a hardwood or birch ply..

Super generous guy. but yeah, I prefer my bandsaw over a scrollsaw too. I wonder if the blade would have made a difference. I find companies don't send their products with good blades generally, even on my bandsaw. Cut like butter once I replaced the one that came with it.

Nate: I feel for ya.' buddy! I own 4 band saws and a 30 year old Craftsman scroll saw. The scroll saw hasn't been used 3 times in 30 years, for the exact same reason you don't care for that one! It vibrates and chatters all over the place and I'm always afraid I'll lose a finger using it? I've seen some seriously delicate craft work done on them, but that's not me I guess? I don't make baits (or I haven't in years), but I still love watching YOU do it. You're a master. I've been a Subscriber your a few years now. Always look forward to seeing what you'll make next?? :~)))) God bless: Dave

The scroll saw can be handy, but for sure I’d prefer the band saw. I have found that if it’s grabbing and kicking the work up, I flip the blade over so it’s grabbing and pulling the work towards the table. No clue if that’s the right way to use it, but it seems to help. 😂
