I suspect that Cast iron mold needs a good sand blasting to remove all the impurities it has collected. The steel mold doesn't retain as many impurities so that's why all of that happened. Theres a bonus video you can do, send blasting the cast iron molds.
@LeglessWonder
@LeglessWonder 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if that was it as well. Cast iron skillets are so great because of the seasoning they can accrue. Surely the same applies for impurities, except in this case it’s unwanted.

its kind of funny for me that im a sheet metal worker. when i get home i turn on bigstackd . just to watch him break metal down and melt it. which is what i fantasize about doing to a lot of stuff at work so ive seen several of his vids mulitple times. the equipment breaks from the maintenance guys not doing there job and good tools go south from lack of service. hmm he did a welder maybe i can ship my spot welder (which i patched several times myself) to this guy. the arms alone i think are brass and are about 2 feet long a peace. not including the guts which has a lot of copper

22:22 I recently read about the lifespans of different breeds of dogs and the French Bulldog has one of shortest. It went on to state that *_generally_* the dogs with shortest muzzles have the shortest lifespans. My hope is that your two have long and healthy lives.
@bradraymond5502
@bradraymond5502 2 жыл бұрын
i could be wrong, but i believe that the life span of brachiocephalic (short snoot) dogs is a bit skewed because of the health problems that can arise from having a malformed skull such as BOAS. its kinda like how people tend to think that life expectancy for people in the middle ages was only like 40 years old, but in reality people still lived well into their 60's and 70's no problems, the average was just skewed by extremely high childhood death. but not all short snoot dogs will get BOAS, we dont really know why some do and some dont, despite having the same skull shapes. if you get a frenchy that doesnt end up with BOAS, their life span is actually quite long. cause one thing that does correlate directly with dog life span is the size of the dog. St. Bernards are some of the most short lived only 8-10 years and chihuahua's are some of the longest at 15-20.

I think you need to clean the cast iron mold of the yellow stuff that's coating the inside, maybe that's why you were having problems getting a perfect cast. All in all, great bar by the way after using the steel mold!👍👍
@louismasar6147
@louismasar6147 2 жыл бұрын
I’m worried you aren’t getting a consistent temperature throughout your crucible. Parts of the brass seemed extremely liquid/ molten while the top layer seemed to almost be starting to freeze when you were pouring it. At mints people often blast the metal as it’s going into the mold with a blow torch, maybe that would help you get a more consistent product. Also borax is part of what you call “Flux” which is what mints use to refine metals, but honestly you are only using 1 out of about 5 components you can use to get rid of impurities
@kadekey1409
@kadekey1409 Жыл бұрын
With my gas furnace it’s the same way when melting anything. I bought a smaller electric furnace for more precious metals and it’s heats the entire crucible up and there is zero metal left frozen in the crucible.

Don't feel bad about the pour side of the bars. That's my favorite part of them. I know you put a ton of effort into the polishing for the mirror shine, but I really like the rough, rugged look of the tops of the bars. Imperfections make the ingots look unique. Embrace them!

I go back to the previous discourse on pouring point/locations from last week's comments. Maybe if poured in mold from 1 corner then it would reduce bubbles. Heated molds, etc. Of course it seemed to be a change of molds that worked so what do I know?
@BoomerKeith1
@BoomerKeith1 2 жыл бұрын
@@generalconsumer9520 I don't think there's a way to get a cast that's without real flaws unless it's done at an industrial level or via centrifuge. I like that there's always a part with the "pour scar" because that gives it character. I do think the change to steel from cast iron mold made a big difference. But I'm nowhere near as experienced as BigstackD.
@generalconsumer9520

@@BoomerKeith1 seriously though, you think someone with 1mil viewers that's cast near 2k-6k times has more knowledge than a fan?!?!?! Jk, like I said I have no skin. I am a BSD fan and just want his work easier. Actually want his items to be more of the BSD clown pillow types. Kid's got chucky, Jason, and freddy plushies/madballs. Would live some original BigD that fits his style, he's 5 and a murker. I know nothing of casting though saw the comments on bubbles and in my teen years at the scrap yard the pours made sense since we only poured in 1 area and all was super heated. I could care less as Big D's casts are awesome to me regardless. I feel character in spotted casts. I see industrial in perfect pours. I need to get off my ass and submit for a ring as we all do, don't forget ro go to the show then list your ring!

Borax flux protects the hot metal from oxidizing by preventing direct contact with air, and can also reduce the amount of zinc that boils off off.... Edit: Borax can be added to crucible with cold metal at the start, and the brass - when sand cast - should be close to boiling. Without a protective Borax layer it'll just turn to oxide slag.

In America you can get a 4lb box of borax for about $6 the price of tin is about $1.50 per lb so they cost about the same the question is do you save a pound of tin or more for every pound of borax used. Of course I don't know the price of Borax or tin in Australia could be tin is cheaper but borax is much more expensive.

A helluva lotta work went into that bar. Oxidation is killing your heats and corrupting your cast. Try flooding the area with Argon gas while pouring your heat. Do this outside and use several stationary nozzles to flood mold and pour stream with Argon gas to keep the O2 out. Heat your metal to a higher temp too.

Question; Melting that bar over and over again. Putting the borax in every time and getting the slag out. Won’t that be a very high quality brass bar since it would be so pure?
