I was either getting too skinny or putting on too much fat. For the last Year i have changed the way I approach nutrition. I have maintain the same weight at 165 pounds and my body has changed dramatically. I have put on 8 pounds of muscle and lost body fat at the same time and I’m not a beginner lifter. I have been working out for 4 years but until now I’m starting to see my full potential. Thank you Jeff. You are a real inspiration. Keep up the good work!

Cut Fat: Negative Energy Balance (Burn more calories than you consume) Build Muscle: Positive Nitrogen Balance (Consume enough protein)
@Vintage.Fitness5 жыл бұрын
Building muscle is more than just eating enough protein. You do have to be in a slight (and I say slight, I mean it could be very slight) calorie surplus. I stand behind that. You can’t be in a 500 calorie deficit and just eat enough protein to build muscle
@nickk33455 жыл бұрын
No way...I've lost almost 100 pounds of fat this year while seeing gains at the gym. I am at an average daily deficit of 1800 calories. I workout everyday and am seeing great results!!!
@DaveLambertITA5 жыл бұрын
O - yeah, 'cause you don't need a 500 calorie deficit, but less; maybe something like 100 calories (?) will do.
@Vintage.Fitness5 жыл бұрын
Nick K that’s because you’re either 1) a beginner 2) able to do so because of being very overweight or 3) you’re not actually making gains, just becoming leaner so you’re able to see your muscle definition more clearly
@Vintage.Fitness5 жыл бұрын
Dave Lambert if you’re in the deficit, you won’t put on muscle regardless. It’s impossible to put on weight in a calorie deficit and you obviously put on weight when you gain muscle (because muscle obviously weighs something) so therefore it is literally not possible unless you are either still acquiring your newb gains or severely overweight

@WhatIsItToBurn7 жыл бұрын
On campus it's easy to cut. It's about finding the average. I don't know how you eat, but let's say you maintain at 2500 and you eat one meal from the hall. Then, ignoring that dining meal, eat 1600 per day. If you gain, try 1400, if you lose too much, then boost it to 1800. Do the change in calories every two weeks. The foods are usually repeated every so often, so taking an average will help. It just means some days you might be over, others you might be under, but the average is what matters.

Yeah, I can attest to what Jeff is saying here. I had a similar body transformation in September/October 2010- January 2011 following this sort of advice. Basically, in terms of VISUAL CHANGE, a lot can be done by reducing bodyfat, working out, and keeping protein high, even in a few months.. Even if you don't pack on a substantial amount of muscle mass, you will "look muscular" by incrementing your muscle up a bit and your bodyfat down a bit. Train consistently (I did a 5x a week program), eat clean (low glycemic index carbs, lots of chicken breast, lots of tuna, some protein shakes, fruit, brown rice occasionally - keep fast food and fried foods to a minimum, maybe one time a week or so), and the results will come if you're patient. The less clean you eat, the slower you will see visual change. The cleaner, the more rapidly. In terms of gaining the most muscle / size the fastest, bulking and cutting seems to be the best route, but you are setting yourself up for a long road where you're not happy with how you look or feel in the bulk phase. So in terms of muscle gain efficiency, bulking and cutting wins. In terms of looking visually appealing asap, eating clean while keeping protein high and working out wins.

My advice is if you want to cut then lower your calorie intake 10-20% below maintenance and if you want to bulk then raise your calorie intake 150 - 400 calories above maintenance. (This is what works for me and i'm not saying this is the only/best way for you personally).
@joelgaal64385 жыл бұрын
@@liamzimmer646 what do you mean by maintenance?
@DaveLambertITA5 жыл бұрын
Jaxon Mattox it actually does (at least for losing fat): how can one consume more calories than how much he has taken? The body uses the energy stored in the fat that one has accumulated, for it is its purpose.
@DaveLambertITA5 жыл бұрын
@W2 if you burn a number of calories, but you eat less calories than how much you've burned, where does your body take those extra calories than it has consumed? The body simply burns your accumulated fat generating energy (Wich are those calories that you have not eaten yet still consumed).
@IZn0g0uDatAll5 жыл бұрын
And how do you know what your precise maintenance is? Also the law allows for a 25% (!!!!) margin of error on nutriments in food. So good luck with being 15% below this or 10% above that.

Jeff, I really appreciate your knowledge and info but this is very confusing as always. I get your point that you don't have to be in a caloric surplus to build muscle, but that would just take ages to add lean muscle. Eating at maintance and adding 3 pounds of muscle a year wouldn't make sense at all. People will be demotivated and probably stop working out since they're seeing no results. And the guy in the picture was just in a 'cutting phase' since that's what you do when you're cutting: eating at a caloric deficit (approximately 500 calories below maintenance). Speaking of caloric deficit, you don't tell us how much of a deficit we should be aiming at. You always discourage to count your calories but how are we supposed to know we're in a deficit?
@Hersheyquest7 жыл бұрын
Right. Of course, you can eat at maintenance and recomp. But it's more efficient to be in a slight surplus to allow your body to thrive for 6 or 12 months. Put on a lot more muscle and then go on a cut. A lean gain approach of +250cal over maintenance should add on .5 pounds bodyweight a week. So 13 or 26 pounds in a year and if its your first year maybe thats 10 or 16 pounds of muscle. You only have to cut 10 pounds of fat. That's only a 10 week cut. Compare that to the guy thats going to recomp for a year and only add on 3 pounds in the year.
@caaljusil81956 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I agree with you. Counting calories is important

MrUmoo swear you guys DONT LISTEN. Like he said, it may change a bit on the scale but the difference will be extreme. That guys weight didn’t change a pound and look at the difference and that isn’t just fat loss. If you’re just worried about the scale then just bulk and cut but it’s not all weight. If you look good, you look good
@robertjr82396 жыл бұрын
And M My friend I've watched this guy for a long time and have lifted weights for a long time and this is the only time I have STRONGLY disagreed with him. Cutting and bulking are KEY to putting on muscle mass. Rather than a 3 pound muscle gain in 1 year, you could add 15 or more pounds of lean muscle in a year and look great. When we say bulk it doesn't mean transform into a fat ass, there's a dirty bulk and a clean bulk. Most, like me, opt for a clean bulk in which the name implies, you eat clean. After 6 months of bulking I have minuscule amounts of body fat. If Jeff and I were to start out with same amount of muscle mass and bf% and he followed his plan and I followed mine, I PROMISE you I'd be miles ahead of him in 1 years time guaranteed. I have mad respect for this guy and will continue to watch him but I know I'm right on this one.
@andm97666 жыл бұрын
Robertjr82 If you need to gain weight then yeah a bulk and cut works. If you have minimal fat then it works. In most of these guys cases, they need to lose fat and gain muscle. He’s saying you don’t NEED to cut and then bulk or bulk and then cut like everybody says you need to do. Like I said, the weight didn’t change and the difference is great. There are situations where you shouldn’t just cut and then bulk. Why? Why not just do what happened there? Everybody is different and some people want to do different things. No duh there are clean bulks and dirty bulks but you gotta look at everybody’s situation. Shoood this guy have cut and got down to 160 and really lean and try to get back up to 180? You get how hard that would be. Or should he have bulked and put on more fat (even minimal) and then cut and weigh the same he already weighed or less. You have to just listen. Just like the original post, he wasn’t even paying attention
