This is a really good video. Now I’ll go look for the follow up video with a single dc pump skimmer test 👀

I feel like there may have been a missed opportunity here to collect nutrient export data by testing the water for NH4, NO2, and NO3 using each of the methods. Nevertheless, this is awesome information. Thank you!

Good ideas for us to consider when testing! Thanks for the feedback! (:

The air flow is mainly important for the smallest bubble size and therefore more water going through the skimmer being processed. That makes it more efficient. Adjust the size so in the column you see the air go to smallest bubbles right before it exits. Not huge varying sizes if at all possible.

I don't really understand this post Adjust the size so you see the air go to the smallest bubbles right before it exits where? Into the neck?

I absolutely hate when a manufacturer gives me a "range" for height, just give me that ideal level.

You are adjusting the type of foam but are you adjusting the removal of organics? Without knowing what was put in vs what was taken out I dont see how this demonstrates which type of foam is better. If you could add a dye to the organics and dose a known amount to each for a specific time, the clarity of the water in the tank at the end of the time period would show what type of foam is required to remove the most organics, and hence what tuning is best. ........ Just my thoughts, but thank you for the effort you guys always make

I'm running a Octo110 classic, and did a water change 2 days ago and the dust that got kicked up from adding water makes my skimmer air basically just shut down. But it'll return if I scrub it out with hot water in the sink

so in order to adjust air I have to rig something up? My eesops skimmer dosnt have anything but a small tube sticking up? How often should you have to empty skimmer? I have a large collection cup like video, I think mine is more like tank 1 alot of crud. Thats a good thing right? I bought used an have no idea what the model is. I did raise it up a bit to allow more water in my sump since i have a small sump.

It’s supposed to have a “air silencer@ on it to control the air flow, whoever sold it to you didn’t sell you tho whole thing

i have the red sea skimmerr 600. It doesnt come with valve like you guys put on the air line. Is that bad me running without one? Since i cant adjust the air flow....i doubt red sea would leave out a part that is need to operate the skimmer properly

It's not 100% necessary, but rather another tool to fine tune the skimmer. Most skimmers won't come with them out of the box.

But what is actually better? Wet skimming or Dry skimming? Which has the better organics extraction rate?
@DavidB-tj3rj5 жыл бұрын
Should be the same. Different concentration for sure but over long run same organics. Wet may have impact on salinity if you have smaller system

I go semi dry. Just in case it decides it wants to over flow, it won't be much.

I will say, there's a definite learning curve with an external skimmer... I think I need to put tub under it.

You do such great work on BRStv, Mythbusters for my reef tank. For us ULM folks - have you considered measuring NO3 / PO4 levels to quantify how much nutrients are being sucked out?

Thanks for the great video. I am confused on one point regarding adjusting the air draw adjustment. I have a Red Sea RSK-300 and it didn't come with the option of connecting a tube to control the air draw.
@BRStv5 жыл бұрын
Skimmers that do not come with a valve for air adjustment would need a separate valve attached to the air intake tube. You could then make adjustments to air draw.
@Ejazzle5 жыл бұрын
So which one pulls out more organics? Raising the water level or increasing airflow?
@madrox41325 жыл бұрын
More air and longer dwell time will remove the most organics.

Dry skimmate stinks a lot more. Usually darker as well.
@HughJanus695 жыл бұрын
Put the 3 skimmers in the same sump and see which one shuts the others down. That way we know if dry or wet is better.
@anchor43465 жыл бұрын
I like this.. Other than finding a way to actually measure the retrieved organis you put into the tank over time, this might be the best method of functional discovery.
@DavidB-tj3rj5 жыл бұрын
Dry creates more solid crud on neck, wet is less crud, more juice. Depends on what you want to deal with. I have a waste locker so I like wet as I can collect more fluid and not have to clean neck as much.

Very nice test. Good job. Now I'm wondering, will you be able to replicate the AC pump result using two identical DC pump, one to feed water and one to draw air, and have them run in different setting but in same total power, like 1+5 & 3+3 & 5+1.

Modern skimmer tech is one of the biggest ripoffs in the aquarium business. Old units or even diy sets do far better job.

+1 I enjoy the BRStv investigates series but I keep waiting for them to compare a new skimmer to a Life Reef unit.
